It's funny how often I have to work overtime on a Tuesday. I'm beginning to think it is a Pavlovian response to Solid Gold Hell. I'd probably never tune in otherwise and only listen to archives.

@Sue P: have you heard about a compilation called "The Reverb Conspiracy?" It's a bunch of psych acts from Europe. The folks behind Austin Psych Fest are distributing it in the U.S. If you haven't heard it yet I think you should check it out; I think you would be like it.

Are there two High Rises?
Avatar 12:50am
Sue P.:

There may well be many High Rises! But in my world this one, the Japanese band from the late 80's to late 90's is THEE High Rise.
Avatar 12:56am
KP:

Once a Fmu dj asked if anyone knew of a decent record store in Paris. I told him about Bimbo Towers, which specialized in Japanese punk, and where I bought high rise). I gave very detailed directions as it was very hard to find. Two weeks later he was on air raving about Bimbo Towers, didn't mention me or even fact that a listener pointed him there. Ce lest vie.
Avatar 12:56am
InBrkly:

Was that an intentional Thee? John Dwyer uses Thee in various projects (I think more than Thee Oh Sees) so I wonder if there is a connection....
  12:57am
seetfu:

enjoyed that, thx
  12:59am
odin v:

High Rise just scorched my brains.
Avatar 1:00am
BadGuyZero:

@InBrkly: I've always assumed that Dwyer is paying homage to Billy Childish [who had several "Thee" bands].
  1:00am
seetfu:

"thee" is nothing new. popular with garage punk bands for a long time. i have no idea where it comes from...
Avatar 1:01am
BadGuyZero:

@KP: This place? bimbo.tower.free.fr
Avatar 1:01am
InBrkly:

Yeah I almost typed Thee Headcoats instead of Thee Oh Sees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16am
G:

The earliest example of "Thee" I found so far is late 60s: "Thee Midniters adopted the unusual "Thee" to avoid the possibility of a legal challenge from the established R&B group of a somewhat earlier era, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters." (in wiki, but footnoted to a published source)

"Thee" is also just a distinctive and rebellious distortion of an extremely common word, and kinda goofs on "The Plurals" type band names.
