Hey Dave. I hope we have ten Daves again this week.

Dave is a very common name . . . my goodness there are 5 or 6 where I work.

I have an Uncle Dave, close as I get.

I'll try not to play anything too jarring.

What a coincidence, I am an Uncle Dave

Hi Dave & listeners! great set! I'm watching the Superbowl. BBC coverage has no ads!

i thought the brooklyn photos were great as well.

Hey Kitty. But I thought the ads were part of the whole experience?

When CBS go to ads BBC goes to pundits in studio
Avatar 9:37pm
Dave Mandl:

@Kitty: It's been so long since I followed football that I'd never heard of the Ravens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
G:

Yes, could actually avoid Stupor Bowl blowout status for once... Was 28-6, now 28-20. Someone woke up the 49ers.
Avatar 9:38pm
Dave Mandl:

@Glenn: Same here about Canarsie. My mother always used to mention it when I was a kid, and it took on this fantastic aura.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
G:

@Dave: Years ago there were the Baltimore Colts, and as B. declined as a city in winter of 84 they packed up a convoy of trucks and moved to become the Indianapolis Colts. Baltimore was dissed and pissed. Ravens were kind of a makegood in 96 when Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore and they were renamed with a Poe reference.
Avatar 9:42pm
glenn:

there's a donald e. westlake book, i forget the title, in which canarsie plays a large part.
Avatar 9:43pm
glenn:

yeah, and baltimore temporarily had a canadian football league franchise and won the grey cup, as weird as that sounds.
Avatar 9:44pm
Dave Mandl:

@G: Thanks. So they were created in '96? And I only just found out this week? So much for football.
Avatar 9:44pm
Dave Mandl:

@glenn: I'll look for that book, thanks.
  9:50pm
Marmalade Kitty:

That must be very disturbing for the fan base of the clubs who shed their id
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
G:

Exactly, Dave. If I had no relatives near Balt, *I* wouldn't know. They built the Ravens a nice new stadium and everything, probably with a fair amount of *public* money, as these things usually go, because after all so many local-election voters are football fans.

28-23, start of 4th quarter, it's actually a competitive game again. My sense was that SF wasn't as bad a team as they seemed to be playing, I kinda thought they were maybe favored to win???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Ike:

Hello all! Nice Gravesend photo, Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

31-23, Balt is trying to slow that SF momentum...

Now that I know who's playing in the Superbowl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
Ike:

Years ago, weren't all of the Stupor Bowls boring blowouts? Is it stupid of me to say that I find the recent trend of exciting SB games to be just sliiiiiiightly suspicious? Is there a way to rig the games to even it up a bit? Of course, I'm biased because I think concussion-ball is dumb and borderline psychotic.

Baltimore held them. SF had first and goal at about 6, and then lost the ball on downs without scoring. close but no cigar, guys

34-31, final.

Baltimore took a deliberate 2-point safety to kill the clock down to 4 seconds and give SF no chance to score again

Dave M, a playlist search shows you've actually played from a few other Cale albums. Does this count towards the 2% rock n roll?

This Simone White is pretty. I've never listened to WFMU in the evening, just during M-F 8-5. Well done! I'll be listening in the evenings more often.

Ethernet is a pedestrian name depending on where you are on in the technology curve. Back in my day a band could get by with just "Wire".

Collector Alert: Sony is retiring MiniDisc in March!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
braveness23:

I'm going to name my band The OSI Model
Avatar 11:29pm
Dave Mandl:

@braveness23: Great. Welcome to the evening.
Avatar 11:30pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I know. But it's the name of a networking protocol. An odd choice, but maybe that's a good thing.
Avatar 11:30pm
Dave Mandl:

Naturally I've got a bunch of things on MiniDisc. I actually liked that technology. I used to record my shows on MD.
Avatar 11:37pm
Droll:

HotChip also has a dubious band name. It's a fab lot term and a conference name. Always made me squirm.

I hated cassette and switched to MD as soon as it became available in 92-93. I always admired the clever pricing that blanks cost as much as recorded MDs. Last summer I ripped all my MDs to WAVs, rediscovering lots of lost gems, then took the MD player down the the electronics recycler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
braveness23:

Heh, I dabbled in alternate media. Wish I could borrow a DAT player for a weekend to get some treasures off of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

On last week's Seven Second Delay, after the show's premise was exhausted 35 minutes in, it changed to an "oldest regularly used electronic technology you own" show. One guy called and said he had a working DCC (digital compact cassette) player! Remember those? MiniDisc vs. DCC was supposed to be the next VHS vs. Beta, except consumers ignored both. 33 minutes, I believe, was the caller's estimation of the time it took for them to become obsolete.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
braveness23:

Today I choose whatever medium is most likely to be playable when I'm 70. If you can't listen to MP3's or look at PDF's in 2050 then it probably means the world has blown up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Economist had a short comment in their last issue which argued that the only technologies that truly die are digital. Basically, we still have vinyl, we still have cassette, but we don't have DAT, or MiniDisc etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
Pete from Boston (and NJ):

braveness23, you mean folk tradition, in other words -- if you can perform it and pass it on, it's pretty much the only guarantee it'll still be around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
braveness23:

But we do have some file formats that seem to be enduring pretty well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@B23, true, but how many have survived because incremental updates that couldn't have happened in the strictly hardware world.
Avatar 11:49pm
Droll:

AW, Not true: Lots of analog formats are gone -- try and find an 8-track player.

Digital stuff is now advanced enough that machine simulators are fast enough to run old programs in a virtual machine. We can run Atari and Colecovision games today in our browsers. And we'll eventually run browsers emulating 8-bit games in neural mind-link devices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Ike:

I often ponder: Will that neural mind-link device of the future allow me to upload my consciousness elsewhere? Should we want to do that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Droll, the point is the hardware is gone. The technology changed from a machine that reads a program from a card, to software that reads a file.
  Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
12539:

Viva la radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
braveness23:

In yours and my lifetimes (and our childrens) I'll bet we never own a digital device that doesn't know what an MP3, PDF and JPG are. Just sayin'. We are rapidly hitting the point where compression isn't necessary but these lossy formats are still pretty damned acceptable. Rarely do I need ot look at a picture and be assured that the 45th thousand pixel from the left 89 million rows down is the precise color it was in real life.
  Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
12539:

..and all its digital extensions.

Nice show, Dave.

I already have .ppt and .doc files I can't read.

See y'inz next week (or 3 minutes)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
G:

braveness: as you say, mp3 is lossy, and i bet there will be a move to a non-lossy audio format as storage cost keeps coming down, with mp3s being able to be played on equipment that plays the new non-lossy format as it takes over.

i see many audiophile and into-music types who view mp3 as temporary. remember when CDs were going to last "virtually forever"?
