The Festival in the Desert was a world-renowned annual musical gathering held near Timbuktu in northern Mali, beloved by local folk as well as lovers of the "desert blues" sound who visited from around the world. That is, until the political unrest that began in 2012 forced a hiatus after that year's festival.

This summer three artists who played that last festival hit the road in an awareness-raising North American Caravan for Peace Tour, including a free Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors concert on Wednesday July 31st, a concert at Bard College Fisher Center in Red Hook New York on Thursday August 1 and an intimate show at Littlefield, 622 DeGraw St. in Gowanus, Brooklyn on Saturday August 3.

All three will play live on tonight's show: Superb singer / guitarist Mamadou Kelly and his group - Kelly carries on the captivating style he honed playing with the late great Ali Farka Toure's group as well as with Afel Bocoum; the ground-breaking and compelling women-led Timbuktu Tuareg traditional ensemble Tartit (led by singer Fadimata Walet Oumar, better known as “Disco"); and Tartit's alter-ego Imharhan - the group morphed into a psychedelic Tuareg electric unit led by Disco's brother Mohamed Issa Oumar Ansary.

Massive thanks to our illustrious engineer Dan Barker and assistant Kieran Byram! And to Christopher Nolan and his label Clermont Music for making this show - and the tour, and cds by all the artists - possible. And for translating!

iAy, morenita! It is this kind of Saturday, Rob, keep them coming!
Avatar 6:23pm spodiodi:

I love this Born to be Wild jam!
Avatar 6:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Intro & riff to opening track - 'Citay'> - reminded me of 'Let There Be More Light' by Pink Floyd,'68, who also had a track that year called 'Careful with That' - not 'Hat', but 'Axe Eugene'...probably all in my insignificant little head...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I feel very bad for the people of Mali. I'm sure they have it rough enough as it is and people come in and start bossing them around.
Avatar 6:57pm spodiodi:

What a great photo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks spodiodi - full disclosure - the photo is borrowed from the Afropop Worldwide summer concert preview page - www.afropop.org...

Thank you for the link, and great show/guests, Rob! Tarit is a treat!

The only Malinese I've known (that I've known) lived in So. MD. Where are the big cities for Mali people in the US?
Avatar 7:06pm spodiodi:

personally*
Avatar 7:08pm spodiodi:

May Tarit outlive any interim political BS!
Avatar 7:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I reprise a Comment I made on the March 23rd Board:
..."The Malian situation saddens me for one reason because Sufism (Esoteric Mystical Islam) had some influence on my own views as a young 'post-psychedelic' person, shall we say.
- The book 'Dancing in the Streets' by Barbara Ehrenreich is about the History & Meaning of Communal Festival - & touches on how a Conservative & Militant Islam took over [meaning here the long view of History] - comparable in some ways to what happened to Christianity in the 'West' w/ Calvinism & such"...
Avatar 7:12pm spodiodi:

One of the coolest programmers I've ever met was Sufi
Avatar 7:13pm spodiodi:

This song is hypnotic
Avatar 7:21pm spodiodi:

How is it spelled?
Avatar 7:23pm fleep:

There are those like Meher Baba who claim Sufism predates Islam, that it is Zoroastrian.
Avatar 7:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- what I got from Sufism in my youth (my own certainly limited exposure, understanding & appreciation, I strongly emphasize) was that it was Universalist: It accepted & embraced the Truth in all Religions - & emphasized Direct Experience - as in Meditation, Practice, Music, Poetry - Love (the Dervishes are Sufi).
- Recently I have read there are now even Militant Sufis - which seems totally counter to what I understood it to be back then - but I don't know any details...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Mike East:

hello all. been listening and enjoying. we are, in fact, delivering backline on monday for hanggai.
  7:27pm common:

this is fantastic!
Avatar 7:28pm spodiodi:

is "common" a label for anonymous comments?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Mike East:

I used to know a sufi and a zoroastrian. very cool people
Avatar 7:29pm fleep:

Militancy cuts across any belief system because that kind of human will carry his/her militancy into any endeavor. I met a militant Hare Krishna in Evanton, we were at a laundromat (orange robes get dirty, too) and he talked about killing for Krishna, as if that was a selling point.

- Musings :
...My understanding is 'Islam' means 'Surrender'. Some relate to that as a mystic surrendering of the ego to the divine - others as a slavish dedication to a dogmatic code of morals & fanatic opposition to all 'infidels' who do not subscribe to it. When people are in notable distress & confusion - Order has an understandable appeal. Islam represents a sizable %age of the World Population - & Generalizations must be resisted. To most, it means living w/ Honor. I'm an American who believes in Civil Liberties, & takes these Values for granted...
Avatar 7:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Krishna did in fact encourage Arjuna to wage war! The Aryans were Militant Lords who came into India from the Middle East.
Avatar 7:50pm fleep:

The people who take something simple and liberating and turn it into fanatic belligerent dogma are Authoritarians. Try this: home.cc.umanitoba.ca...
  7:51pm Mitten John:

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: "Holy merde, this is a good show!"

teherdent lute ... I think the native word is N'Goni baragnouma.com...
  8:45pm katie:

And Detroit features a lovely swim-able river and numerous outposts of art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks Katie - I was having trouble spitting it all out! Katie by the way swam the Motor City Mile open water swim across the Detroit River last week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Rob Weisberg:

Fleep - yes, Chris Nolan translated "teherdent" as "ngoni" which is what Bassekou Kouyate (also from Mali) calls it in his unique (and rocking) multi-ngoni group "Ngoni Ba". It's that thin oval long-next lute you see in the photo. Today the band had only one of them actually - the photo isn't 100 pct representative of the session!
