The lack of decent playback decks has also baffled me about this "cassette resurgence". Still, it's just like when cassettes were popular the first time: players don't last and they destroy tapes.

@Droll: I have to admit that as a radio DJ I hate cassettes for another reason: They're impossible to cue up compared to LPs and especially CDs.

I'd be hip to Reel-to-Reel resurgence. Of course we'll all end up complaining about having to bake old tapes. The cost alone of open reel tape would keep the hipsters out, so it could be like a 70's Hi-Fi resurgence.

Droll, huh? I rarely had any trouble with cassettes getting eaten. Just once or twice in 20 years. Maybe I was just lucky. I had a lot more trouble with vinyl. Maybe my folks were just too cheap with the bottom-of-the-barrel needles, but our tape decks were always reliable. But yeah, when I became a college DJ, cassettes were too hard to cue and lost some of their luster.

Evan just turned over all the old WoG reel tapes to me (what we made most of the original pre-mix down recordings on) cause he woulda thrown 'em out instead! Well, there's one less usable closet, ha-ha! Have a good show, enjoying it, hope you're swell....

I'd splice to fix a crappy old tape with lousy levels that I love.
Splicing instead of digital editing? Scratch animations in film are still neat, and glad to learn the reel techniques, but nah-uh.

My biggest complaint about cassettes was that the big record company pre-recorded tapes would start to develop an unpleasant squeal towards the end of each side after they had been played a few times. Especially the budget line tapes.

So far, my back issues of OPtion and Sound Choice have survived the culling from 3 major WA -> CA (or vice versa) moves in 20 years.

I cut the LPs and cassettes down by 2/3 during the last move. Most of the cassettes that survived were homemade Over The Edge and Subgenius tapes that I hope to transfer to mp3s.

PSS, I also have a box of cassettes I'd love to transfer (to WAV or AIFF), but I refer back to my comment on lack of decent quality playback devices. If you find a way to do that, count me in!

I have a USB cassette deck. Dunno about "decent quality", (the phrase sounds odd when applied to cassette tapes) but it seems to work well enough -- if only I wasn't so lazy.

Haven't seen THAT complaint yet from people who bought the same deck I did. The only bad reviews have been from people on the low side of the bell curve who can't understand that you have to use audio processing software to handle digital audio files.

Awesome show and very inspiring stuff! I try to pick up cassette decks from secondhand shops or refurbished 80s or early 90s units (Technics, Onkyo, Sony). Have had pretty good luck with them!

DM, I believe it's customary to put the band name in quotes, not the fact it was a band. It's been aired a few times, but it was always by DJs with 3 hours to fill. I mean, it takes a long time before you resort to flexis.
