Umpteen years back, the ex & I almost moved to Charleston, SC. I could easily have run my business from there where everything costs less, and a house there cost a mere fraction of what equivalent housing would cost in the NY area. Any number of things kept that move from occurring, and am I ever glad. NY is home, NYC is where I belong. Mrs. Yankfan never wants to live elsewhere, and I don't want to live without Mrs. Yankfan. Anywhere else would require significant travel to get to Yankee Stadium, where we go on so many Summertime evenings or afternoons. So here we stay, happily ensconced
in the Big Apple.

This was around the time of Enron's rolling blackouts - which turned out to be phony, & shortly before they put Arnie in as Governator in the belief he was the action hero to get the financial disaster in order in Cali.

I'm living within a half mile of where I grew up in the Bronx, and have spent precious little time elsewhere. However, as the years go by and friends die or move away, there's less & less tying me to here, and I'm contemplating moving to NE Penna. in accord with my friend's idea -- http://vrilology.org/ALF.html . That are is fireworks-friendly, which would allow me to indulge in lots of experiment'n.

However, I'm broke, practically unemployed, and even if I had a car and a license (haven't for a few yrs.), I developed a hwy. driving phobia a decade ago. So, what'll give?

That Hammet story-withn-a-story is haunting because it's bizarre yet believable, and because it ended anticlimactically. The guy was found after a few years, said he did it for no good reason, but had a new life, everybody made up & got over it.

I have a thing for anticlimaxes in mystery stories. I think the one of "Lost" was a false conclusion, to be elucidated later. One of my favorite endings of "Radio Mystery Theater", though, was one where the inspector is asked if the case would never be solved, and he (Fred Gwynne) answered, "Why not? It happens all the time."

An elder cousin of mine inherited a town house in Charleston, so he decided to move there from NYC. Living there inspired him to write a steamy novel about 19th century Charlestonians, based on real citizens of the day. After a lifetime barely making a living as a writer, the novel hit number one on the NY Times bestseller list. Sequels followed and he was set for life.
