Thanks Meghan!

Nyaruach Gatluak is the sister of Emmanuel Jal, South Sudanese rapper who has had some international success. That was a great track.
Avatar 6:18am
fred von helsing:

Traktor lets you mark points for intro fade-in and outro fade-out for segues and I hope it uses the standard MP3 tags for this but I haven't tested it yet. Also it claims to let you set ratings in a way that interoperates with iTunes but I haven't tested that either. Geek babble concludes.

Beets is cool cos it refs musicbrainz AND if it has trouble with a track it'll take a content fingerprint and submit it to the echonest DB for a match. I'm gonna fire it up this weekend (aftermaths permitting).

2TB is impressive but there must be SOMEBODY at wfmu in the petabyte range

It's true, Chad has a pretty small footprint in the world of African pop - I'm glad Meghan did a little digging. This beautiful track is actually pretty much classic Congolese style dance band rumba-soukous, via an artist / band from Chad. Congolese music is popular all over Sub-Saharan Africa.

Fred - Clip Converter is what I think you're looking for - it grabs individual things on YouTube, any length. Quite fast (you don't need to run the clip, just enter the URL) and can run in the background. I use it for music and you know, that's where I get my Hausa films! Etc. Quite fabulous. I use it with my Mac and it works great - not sure how it does with PC's. One note: They have had an online app or you can download a desktop app - not sure if the online version still works but definitely the desktop version does. www.clipconverter.cc

Hey Meghan, S.E Rogie (in the cd library) and Abdel Tee-Jay are great for Sierra Leone. Liberia is tricker but there is a very engaging song, Kokolioko, by Liberian singer Miatta Fahnbulleh on a comp we should still have on vinyl in the African LP Comp section, an African reggae collection called Black Star Liner.

I think we might have music by Kaba Mane from Guinea-Bissau on cd in the library. Or - search for "Kaba Mane Kunga Kungake" on YouTube and you'll get a nice track from the cd I'm thinking of (a best-of from the 90s I believe).

For Burkina, we have a cd by Burkina Electric in the library, based in NY but I think they still would qualify - interesting collab centered around singer Mai Lingani and avant-garde composer / percussionist Lukas Ligeti (son of the late great avant-garde composer György Ligeti); they played on my show in 2010. There's also a track by them (from a KEXP session actually) in the Free Music Archive.

"New album Sahara Sessions released on June 2013
The Sahara Sessions was recorded deep in the desert. Sheltered only by an animal-skin tent and the vast canopy of midnight stars, Etran Finatawa played their guitars and sang straight from the heart. Each poignant song and every slap of the calabash drum articulating the deepset divisions in the Sahel region that are threatening their Nomad way of life." www.etranfinatawa.com

This is the CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER...it is my responsibility to enforce all the laws that haven't been passed yet. It is also my responsibility to alert each and every one of you to the potential consequences of various ordinary everyday activities you might be performing which could eventually lead to *The Death Penalty* (or affect your parents' credit rating). Our criminal institutions are full of little creeps like you who do wrong things...and many of them were driven to these crimes by a horrible force called MUSIC!

Our studies have shown that this horrible force is so dangerous to society at large that laws are being drawn up at this very moment to stop it forever! Cruel and inhuman punishments are being carefully described in tiny paragraphs so they won't conflict with the Constitution (which, itself, is being modified in order to accommodate THE FUTURE).

For future reference, we have Moorish style music from Mauritania in the cd library - Malouma from Mauritania and maybe also the great Dimi Mint Abba. Also Aïcha Mint Chighaly although her cd may be filed with compilations. Also we just had our first band from Mauritania on FMU, Noura Mint Seymali and her group - they were on my show Sept 28th and played in NY at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn and Silvana in Harlem. Their Azawan II EP (on cd) should in the new bin soon, but possibly not there yet. There is also a cd in the new bin by Orchestre National de Mauritanie in Mandeng style - more like music from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Cool post-prandial beats. @DaveB I've had trouble getting sox to convert from (say) WAV to MP3. For metadata there's beets. For your own fields, it's doable within the MP3 spec, and I'm playing around with Go (golang) to make a tool to do this. Ratings like Traktor's are in the MP3 spec too so why the hell does iTunes use out-of-file metadata ? Morons.
