I've asked a genetic scientist to his face @ a talk - how do you know by your Selection that you're not just making 'race horses' - something that can 'run fast', but breaks down & gets sick easier - given you admit that the genetic code is like a roomful of encyclopedia you haven't read & understood yet; a classic Chaos Theory situation of complexity & unpredictability
- & the answer was basically he thot the risk was worth it...
- & everyone knows it will be *impossible* for Mansanto (or whoever controls the Means of Production) to keep GMO crops from breeding w/ other crops out in the fields...
- @ least GMOs are actual plants & animals - unlike all manner of Things processed & developed that go into our Foods...

I have a question: When making a mash-up, as I have a few times, why would you put your *own* name down as "the artist"? I find that choice not only egotistical, but really rude to the people whose artistry you're manipulating. If you really MUST see your name in a playlist, then add it somewhere in your newly fashioned title, but not as "artist."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm

@kat330: put you name if you're happy with owning what you did. If you're not, maybe you shouldn't put it out there. You are making artistic choices in a collage/mash-up that the original artists didn't make, so I think putting their names in front is questionable. Definitely name them though
Avatar 3:11pm
northguineahills:

I usually take the Cageian route when defining an artist. Heck, even the designers of the acoustic and electronic instruments and software can also be considered as collaborators for whatever sound I'm experiencing.... However, it's a rather fluid definition whichever viewpoint one takes...
Avatar 3:11pm

Avatar 3:13pm
kat330:

@fred: Has nothing whatsoever to do with being happy owning -- I'm thrilled to pieces with a couple of my mash-ups -- but I'd never even THINK to not put the artists whose work I'm manipulating down in the "Artist" column. My work is secondary.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
fred:

@kat330: I don't think what you do is secondary. Derivative in a non-valuing sense. But definitely not secondary, and I'm not saying that just because I liked the one mash-up you did that I heard. It's more of a principled position on my part, as was my earlier statement. I spent some time delving into those questions for work, so I had time to carve a rigid boneheaded -- aka principled -- position
Avatar 3:21pm
kat330:

@fred: Now this IS an interesting topic. So people who use MIDI and loops and VST's -- are they true artists? How about autotuned singing?
Avatar 3:22pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

our databases do not accommodate full crediting of involved individuals, nor does our culture properly fit it, as most music is named after the lead performer rather than the writer or producer or the other musicians or or or or

everyone should do their best but their best will never be good enough because our system is inadequate, perhaps something to do with real life not being measurable

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm

@kat330: DJ/Rupture played many great songs that took autotune off its intended tracks. I think it's not about what you use, it's what you do with it. If you put something of yourself and transform the material, you deserve credit. Changing the context I'm not sure about, sorry Marcel

Just credit all mashups to "the whole of human existence and experience across all spacetime". That way only pre- and post-human beings, and egotistical jerks are offended.
Avatar 3:26pm
kat330:

@Kenzo: The way I was first forced to think about it was when I was filling in the iTunes info on my .mp3 files. Under "Artist," it just seemed ludicrous NOT to fill in Tetaz and Jules in that section. And at least there's sufficient room to credit all who SHOULD be credited in that area.

15 years ago I attempted to create a spreadsheet of all of my records w/ fields for various contributors, musicians, etc... I soon gave up as I was unable to quantify many people's contribution to each album (and I started working after college)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
fred:

@kat330: there's room enough, but few bots will find that. Is that the point? To me something important is that it's not what the original artists wanted to do. You didn't ask them. It seems to me much simpler for you to claim it than to say it's theirs. Which one anyway? Both? Maybe they can't stand each other. You made the final cut, I think you should "own" the result, and credit the contributors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Ike:

@Kat, I'm a fan of resurrected DW seasons 1-3 and 5-6, but 4 and 7 are mostly disappointing IMO. Much of Murray Gold's soundtracking is hamfisted maudlin musical drivel drowning out dialogue frequently. Love Eccleston & Smith.
Avatar 3:32pm
kat330:

And, btw, I think you do an amazing job of crediting and listing of all involved -- even to the point of listing names whose bits can't really be heard -- but I'm only speaking to those who do mash-ups and take the "Artist" credit. For people who've never heard the original sources, for e.g., makes it very difficult for them to search and find them.

I'm just checking email, cooking potatoes, and keeping the comments board open for now.

I'm multi-tasking, too (though I cannot juggle). Listening to SoundCloud tracks on my Dashboard, reading e-mail and the local alternative weekly online. And typing here on occasion.

a) There's no one meaning of "mash up"
b) There's no ideal approach to identifying one. It can be nice to name both the original and the mixer as the artist, but then there's no database-able way to find it. Like, I want to find all of djNoNo's mixes. I can if he/she/it/they named the mixes by such name. The comments field has to suffice for naming the source artists. How would I do it? Some of my 5-minute segments have 25 artists in them. What would you suggest? Name 25 artists in the artist field? AND not name myself?

Creation is egotistical. And all of life is derivative. I may not agree with everyone else's choices or where they draw their own lines, but I can't deny the relative and ever-repeating nature of everything.

Kenzo, I was never even thinking of your work and this show when I brought up the truth-in-advertising who's the artist? question.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

and, kat, you have interpreted something from something I didn't say or indend. I said "judgments", and then you said "Apparently we can only pass judgment on a specific safe list of things." All I said was "judgments"! The rest hadn't occurred to me, nor would be something I would feel or communicate.

There's ego and then there's EGO. I may attribute to a fault -- I will explain where every inspiration came from -- but I'd prefer to err that way than in taking credit where it simply isn't due. WFMU and this stream play plenty of mashups where, IMO, the wrong name is in the Artist field.

When something is a simple remix or cover, I like it when the artist puts the original artist's name in the "title" field, in parentheses.

If I am searching for a collage artists work, searching under their name is the way I am going to do it.

- whenever these Crediting issues come up, I refer to this great film 'Copyright Criminals' :
www.youtube.com...
- which is apparently on YouTube now, so we can see it *w/out giving any monetary credit* to the creators !! (?)...
