Tonight we'll hear a large portion of Ukrainian phenomenon DakhaBrakha's exhilarating New York and US debut concert, Sept 19 2013 at a packed CUNY / Elebash Hall Live at 365 concert.

DakhaBrakha returns to New York to perform on Sunday January 12 as part of the annual twelve-artist three-stage Globalfest world music showcase concert at Webster Hall in lower Manhattan. They're also playing on Monday night January 13 at Le Poisson Rouge as part of the Eye For Talent APAP Showcase.

Starting mid-week the APAP conference brings lots of world musicky artists to NYC to showcase. Globalfest is the highest profile - but there are also excellent multi-artist shows at many other venues including Drom (Thurs-Sat Jan 9-11), SOBs (Mon Jan 13), Le Poisson Rouge (Mon Jan 13) and Alwan for the Arts (Fri Jan 10).

yay, goat! "world music" and "live ballroom ritual" were among the utter best of 2013.

...Mitra Sumara are bringing it!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm katie:

One of my absolute favorite concerts. Their hats were worth the price of admission - and would be perfect on a day like today.
Avatar 7:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- oh - I mean Dakha Brakha - delayed playlist syndrome...delightful !...
Avatar 7:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& here's some images!; websearching for some - my 1st thot - w/ the hats & long white dresses like robes - was: Sufis !...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In the photo, are those actual people on some kind of hay wagon or dolls on a skateboard? It's hard for me to tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Rob W:

There's an awful lot of hay in Ukraine...
Avatar 7:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& websearching a tiny bit more (not much) - indeed looks like serious Art~imagery~performance things happening! (as Rob informed)...These guys are interesting & fun !!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Guido (Cologne):

I enjoy the show.
Hardly had a chance to get some of that "traditional music".
I guess even most Ukrainans haven't.
According to my friends, musical awareness in Ukraine mainstream still is comoparetively dumb and dull.

Just in case of interest, another take on Ukrainian music, in this case (un-)popular once promoted on WFMU-Blog.:
blog.wfmu.org...
I just became aware I missed the 20th anniversary of this thing.
Avatar 7:46pm doca:

hello, guido! you're still up?
hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Rob W:

Thanks Guido - yes, dear listeners, definitely check out the blog post. And well Guido, you still have plenty of time to organize the 25th Anniversary tour! Maybe by then I will have learned enough about decorating pysanky and Planeteer Linka to qualify as an average American - right now I'm definitely below the bar. By the way - by any chance do you know Marjana Sadovska, Ukrainian singer / performance artist who lived in NY for a while but moved to Cologne?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Guido (Cologne):

Heya Doca! :-)

Yes, it's close to 2 AM over here. I'm having a cool down after a busy record-cleaning session, getting some back-massage and having a first beer. And WFMU / respectively Rob W.'s show keeps me awake. The night owl I am ...
Avatar 7:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...energetic, skillful, amusing, soulful, intriguing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Guido (Cologne):

No Rob, haven't heard of Marjana Sadovska.
But as you tell me I should have, so I will check her out.
Avatar 7:59pm doca:

Youtube says Marjana Sadovska recorded a version of Immigrant Song. After Dakha Brakha I'll check it out too.
Avatar 8:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& nicely-recorded as well. Thx !!
Avatar 8:03pm doca:

Sadovska video links:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Rob W:

Thanks doca! Marjana is a very interesting charismatic performer. She's very into Ukrainian pre-Christian or pagan ritual but does her own thing with it...
Avatar 8:14pm doca:

I'll try to find out more about her, the first video sounded interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Guido (Cologne):

I'll ask my friends ... about Marjana and DakhaBrakha ... what they know ... how they like ...

... by the way, some of those groups from my Novaya-Scena-link are back|still in action.
Kazma Kazma just finished a very very nice album.
Foa Hoka went on performing and became kind of electronic dance outfit.
Elza just played an anniversary show.
Svitlana Nianio from Sugar White Death currently writes and records new material.
Sergej from Rabota Ho lives in New York now.
Vasily Goydenko from Collyegsky Assessor continues solo.
And an Ukrainian Underground discussion group on Faceboook exists.
Avatar 8:17pm doca:

@Guido: can you send the link to the Ukrainian Underground discussion group, if it is open to everyone?
  8:19pm TDK60:

This is cookin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Rob W:

Thanks TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Guido (Cologne):

I think it must be this here:
www.facebook.com...
I myself I'm not a member. Most of it is written in Ukrainian.
So currently no idea what they discuss. The main admin lives in USA.
Avatar 8:28pm doca:

I guess my computer won't get any viruses and I can't worry anymore about government surveillance, so I can click on the videos they post. It's always good to find something new. I've spent a week on the beach virtually without music, so I'm thirsty for new things.
Avatar 8:30pm TDK60:

Is this singer from Tinariwen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Guido (Cologne):

Let me know what you liked most, Doca! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Rob W:

Actually TDK60 you're in the ballpark, same part of the world, northwestern African. Hasan Hakmoun is a Gnawa singer from Morocco, tradition routed in southern Morocco, whereas Tinariwen is from further south, northern Mali.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Guido (Cologne):

However, I feel at home!
What a perfect "go-to-bed-music" ... don't get me wrong, it's 2:50 over here ...
Avatar 8:50pm doca:

This is great stuff, Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Guido (Cologne):

STAR-liked The Bombay Royale
Avatar 8:52pm Nigh:

Loved the show!
Avatar 8:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah Rob - gratuitous superlatives !!
- Thx for bringing *all this* to us...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This version of "Take On Me" sure beats the original.
