I'm thinkin' about buying a telecaster deluxe. Chelsea Guitars has a pretty sweet one I got my eye on.
Avatar 6:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I never wanted a Tele - unless maybe to get a fuzzbox & pretend I'm Jeff Beck in the Yardbirds. Want a Strat of some kind. Having said that - the idea that you can fiddle w/ the pickup settings on a Strat & make it a Tele is probably not completely true.
(...I'm frankly listening to News but reading here - so if my participation is lop-sided I apologize...)

Chris M.:

really hard to find a fuzz pedal that really captures that classic tone. there are tons of fuzz pedals but i'm not aware of any that really sound like those old Kinks records.
Avatar 6:18pm
Chris M.:

maybe zvex. they're pretty versatile.
Avatar 6:19pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Dave Davies famously slit his speakers & stuck pins in them & things - right before fuzzboxes became available w/ the Yardbirds & stuff - so not surprising Chris M - right? Listening to 'Well Respected Kinks' album lately - & the tones pretty unique - & killin' awlright...But the mikes, tubes, board - *amps* - *none* of that is what it was 50 years ago...

Mike East:

Here was my setup on New Years Day:
guitar: tuner: A/B box - (A: Volume pedal a/b box -a= sub b=TrekII pedal: Leslie 147) B: Ibanez Tube Screamer: Boss DD7 (delay): Boss CE1 (old ass stereo Chorus Ensemble pedal) : L= Deluxe Reverb R= Hotrod Devile 4x10

Marcel M:

Its better to get a boutique clone of a vintage pedal. Vintage pedals are not made as well.
Avatar 6:20pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- the Vintage pedals were highly variable - not uniform, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
Mike East:

Love the Rat pedal. Boss DS1(orange distortion) could take or leave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Marcel M:

The RAT is considered a FUZZ is it not?
Avatar 6:21pm
steve:

Chris M - i think about things like that as well, and knowing a bit about electronics (and how dumb-simple the circuits in most guitar pedals are), i wonder if that "classic tone" has as much to do with the production and mastering (subtle nuances of various stages of preamps, buffers, eq, compression, etc) as with the chain from guitar to amp
Avatar 6:22pm
Chris M.:

@revolution and @steve - that's all true. the really raspy fuzz sounds on early records are the holy grail because they weren't achieved with a pedal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm

Wish I could help, but I'm a drummer. Sorry, Chris!

- there was this one box they had in Britain very early on that gave a treble boost - heard on Clapton's solo on Yardbird's 'Certain Girl'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm
Mike East:

I use this Ibanez Fuzz pedal sometimes, but when you stomp it, it cuts out for a second...which is bullshit.

- & by the time you get to Hendrix - nothing is 'off the shelf' - & he's got Roger Meyer (ex Navy radar tech.!) making things *to order* - amps rewired - speakers replaced - on & on...

There are so many companies making boutique clones of old pedals now

Chris M - are we talking about tubes re: early guitars on record? im curious. i know electronics (mostly synths and preamps) but not guitar. that makes me wonder why they don't put those same circuits into pedals or rack units... ?

Rudy's is still on 48th, I think. Sam ash moved to 34th and they ate up Manny's years ago

Making me very nostalgic for playing guitar. I had that Ventures record. Got great fuzz with my Supro amp
Avatar 6:41pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- there's all the Digital stuff in Guitar Amps now that aims to simulate any Tube effect you want - but Tubes give the Warmth & Overdrive in a certain way...
- This is why the trend has gone back to small amps that Overdrive like the Old Records
-also P.A.s got better - & big amps aren't needed like before...

I was over that ground in my phone call last week. The m.c. said the show itself was not supposed to be damned by God, rather that "goddamn" was meant to be an expression of emphasis in the vein of "fuckin'", in which case it goes better as "goddam" without the "n".
Avatar 6:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

An interesting thing I read somewhere about Distortion: It actually makes the Sound Wave simpler - cuts off the highs & things - more like a uniform electronic synthesizer's soundwave...

- In many cases - they aren't even making guitars out of the same wood anymore ! Those trees are *gone*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Mike East:

Literally just got a phone call from Chelsea Guitars...having nothing to do with me buying a telecaster deluxe
  6:49pm
Robert:

And I was the guy who said he wasn't a fan of this guy's predecessor (the unspoken Tom Scharpling). I tuned in to some of his early shows -- the interview of Bruce Campbell especially -- but didn't care for what the show soon turned into. Monica I'll miss; Scharpling, not especially.

LovecraftDude888:

There's a bunch of boutique companies making all kinds of pedals, fuzz, whatever, and still have Electro Harmonix, and companies like that. It's a matter of what you need and what you can afford. Meanwhile i bought a new Fender Mustang I amp and a real Tubescreamer pedal 2 months ago and cannot even use it at new apt., cause of the noise situation. Which is radically sucking. I got an Ibanez TS7 TS pedal with the boost switch was was great. and got it cheap online too. But there's all kinds of pedals and you gotta go play and listen carefully!! In the shop!!

Overdrive "chops off the peaks and valleys of the curves" in the waveform so to say.
So they become "edgy".

Certainly certain information gets lost.

I like "The Oud and the Fuzz" by John Berberian.

TC pedals are apparently pretty good. EHarmonix.... ibanez TS of course. But you can get multi FX pedals boards like BOSS or Digitech now and that's fine for most things.

Kayle in Toronto:

There's that documentary "Fuzz: The Sound that Changed the World" (or something like that) where the dude from ZZ Top is like "I tried the EHX Big Muff and I liked it. Then I tried two and I liked that more. So now I just use six in a row."
  6:53pm
LovecraftDude888:

Sorry I meant Tech21 my friend who is a pro musician says those are excellent pedals.
  6:54pm
LovecraftDude888:

yeah some of the pros use multiple pedals or doubling or tripling, or like SRV had two TScreamer pedals set for different things for different songs etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Mike East:

re: Boss DS1 - we've got two at the shop here and I still use it sometimes, but I usually prefer using an amp that has an overdrive channel for my distortion with a Tubescreamer as more of a line boost

@Kayle - I've been wanting to see that for a while now. Gotta move that up the list.
Avatar 6:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in the earliest days - those Brit Invasion guys who'd become Gods bult their own guitars - that's drive & industry! - & used their Mum's Radios for amps !
...In the fil 'How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin' - they speak of this behind the Iron Curtain too.
- You gotta admire that !
  6:56pm
LovecraftDude888:

the BOSS fuzz pedal gets high marks generally, I"m seeing. I found I could get some natural fuzz grunge out of some small Vox amps even the Pathfinder...but that amp had not a lot of power.

Kayle in Toronto:

@Mike I think a lot of the folks in that movie are WAY too anal about pedals but it's for sure worth watching. I just like to keep my eye out on craigslist for anything that's stupidly cheap and try out different combinations. Found boost/fuzz one built by this CopilotFX guy in the Dominican for maybe $40 CDN and I'll love it forever.

- in the 'Nugget's sorta Garage Rock - it's like the Fuzz actually *cut* the Sustain - like an angry snotty mosquito
- by the time you got this Iron Butterfly post-Hendrix - we're on our way to Metal & things...
  6:58pm
Lumpy:

You can Google what equipment was used on what records, a lot of this info has been documented. Look into these fuzz variants (now made by various manufacurers): Fuzzrite, Tonebender, Shin Ei Companion, Maestro something-or-other, Superfuzz. I believe the Fuzzrite was used by Iron Butterfly. Understand that everything in your signal chain makes a difference - amp, guitar, pickups, strings, even your playing style. And when you're listening to a record, you're hearing a vintage recording process and then listening back on vinyl. It all makes a difference. Try Youtube as suggested, Google, and maybe think about building your own pedals with kits from General Guitar Gadgets and Build Your Own Clone (dot com)
  6:58pm
LovecraftDude888:

That assumes one has any tech. skills at all. I wouldn't bother

LovecraftDude888:

Those Line6 amps aren't bad neither
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm
Guido (Cologne):

Link Wray did als slit his speakers.
In Ike Turners band when they did the famous Rocket 88 ...
was it a broken amp or damaged speaker membrane?
The Broques on the flipside of "Miacle Worker", that was also a broken amp.
They never could get that sound after the recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm
Mike East:

not a fan of Line6 amps...the ones I've played, anyway
Avatar 7:03pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Guido: I heard w/ the Ike Turner - the amp fell off the car or whatever & a tube was loose - viola - Distortion!
Avatar 7:03pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...voila...no violas involved.
  7:04pm
LovecraftDude888:

I dunno, my friend Pete was recording with one a few months ago and he loved the Line6...I know, I wasn't that into it compared to the Fender Mustang which I ended up getting instead, purely due to the retro amp models in there, and the OD sound was great, the metal setting sounds like The Smithereens like a JCM stack basically. Great! But now I can't make noise here...grrrrrrr shit sucks hardcore
Avatar 7:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh yeah! 'Miracle Worker' ! - makes sense...
  7:05pm
LovecraftDude888:

If you can find an old Ampeg amp, or Reverbrocket reissue those are quite good small amps....but expensive Peavey makes some good modeling amps too I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
Guido (Cologne):

So best advice:
Don't try to copy other's sound!
Create your own and leave it to others trying to imitate you!
Make something crazy!
  7:06pm
Lumpy:

I forgot a style of 60s fuzz- the Bosstone. That might have been the Iron Butterfly fuzz actually.
  7:07pm
LovecraftDude888:

nevermind, was gonna say the Vox modeling ones are quite good, if you're into modeling amps, the Vox ToneLab series....some of the best modeling combos. Otherwise you're talking what, $850 for a Vox AC30 or a real tube amp or the Marshall Bluesbreaker amps..the prices are absurd.
  7:08pm
LovecraftDude888:

I have 3 tiny amps practice that gathered dust, cause they only have like one sound...including a Kustom tube practice...which wasn't very good.
Avatar 7:08pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & early 60s Vox - those were SolidState amps - no? Beatles, Yardbirds ??...Rob Zombie likes SolidState??...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm
Mike East:

I was thinking of getting an Ampeg Gemini. found some on craigslist for a pretty good price.
Funny you mention Fender Mustang....Chelsea Guitars was calling me about a fender mustang bass...if you were paying attention to my earlier comments, that brings it all around.
  7:09pm
LovecraftDude888:

SuperBeatles amp? All tube for sure, weren't they? Probably. And the early Vox AC30 or 15 all tube

And remember what Andy Eldritch said about whammy bars.."that prong which can ruin a perfectly good chord"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm

I love those cheesy Boss "Heavy/Hyper Metal" for use with bass guitar.
I love multi-amping with different effect sets on each amp.

Pete Townshend claims he put a vibrato arm straight through his palm.
  7:15pm
LovecraftDude888:

Yeah BOSS makes 10 different heavy uber metal pedals, the MetalZone one is apparently quite good, or the DeathMetal one. A lot of people buy the wrong gear not realizing you are not getting a metal sound really out of a TScreamer....all ODs are not equal. Gotta really play things and try them out. And the modeling boxes like BOSS are cool but all solid state...I mean, if you want real analog you gotta buy real analog
  7:16pm
LovecraftDude888:

Guido...I'm lucky I can even play thru one amp here now....
or even at my prev. apt. Can't make a racket here which is very annoying indeed. So I had the Fender Mustang going with the TS and that was it. But it's modeling. Good enough to make an ungodly noise.
  7:17pm
LovecraftDude888:

There's always the headphones. Also the Vox mini headphone amps are app. ok.

Hey, Chris. Regarding your quest for equipment that will produce a fuzztone guitar sound, I can't help. However, as a record hoarder with OCD (Obsessive Collector's Disorder) I am here to give you the hookup on a couple of blog posts that highlight the best fuzztone records ever and, believe it or not, they're all country records! Dig in.
