Favoriting JA In The AM with John Allen: Playlist from January 8, 2014 Favoriting

"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15am

I was going to ask dex the same thing. I'd love to take advantage of my JA shot glass during the show, but I was always told gentlemen don't drink before 10 AM.

Sem Chumbo:

One hour later than Jersey City, 600 nautical miles north northwest. -10C and very windy, as per usual.
GOT: and your problem is? :)

Sem Chumbo:

"The yardarms on a sailing ship are the horizontal timbers or spars mounted on the masts, from which the square sails are hung. At certain times of year it will seem from the deck that the sun has risen far enough up the sky that it is above the topmost yardarm. In summer in the north Atlantic, where the phrase seems to have originated, this would have been at about 11am. This was by custom and rule the time of the first rum issue of the day to officers and men. It seems that officers in sailing ships adopted a custom, even when on shore, of waiting until this time before taking their first alcoholic drink of the day."

Enjoying this morning very much, despite not having a JA shot glass. Making do with a Flintstones juice glass, featuring Bam Bam.

I finally gotta little cold - wish I had a BamBam shot - all I got is wine...Tue. is *my* 'Saturday' - so most often listening to JA after Pub Night if you get my drift - just now I think Miso & JA picks will do me good...

RRN63: Is that version in key? www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:09am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- wull, I'm not booing fred
...yerknow it's funny (but then again not) - but I think Kronos Quartet 'got it' a lot more than a lot of guitarists who try it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12am
fred:

@RRN63: you're dead right about Kronos, have you ever heard their take on the star spangled banner? It used to be a regular in their live sets, years ago
Avatar 8:13am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- they do it Jimi-stylee ? - ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am

@RRN63: yeah, or at least they used to, and I thought it was even better than purple haze

...I remember seeing a concert w/ Chinese pipa - which is their little flat (no resonator) pear-shaped lute-like instrument - & the player played a composition about a royal battle - hundreds of years old - replete w/ 'anthems' & impressions of cannon, &tc. - & I thot - this is not so different from Hendrix !...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20am
fred:

The pipa is one of my favorite instruments ever! I saw Kronos play with Wu Man once (they have collaborated on record a few times), and Wu Man too other times. I wish she'd play more often nearby, it's been years
Avatar 8:24am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- good cover of Byrds; as innovative as they were (a lot) - they didn't have George Martin to do strings or such (some Production touched weren't the best)...
