My high school had a really obnoxious chant at football and basketball games that worked into the words not only pi but also the number of national merit scholarship semi-finalists we had compared to the other school. Insufferable!

Uncle Michael: You're right, I found this: "If you write the date in the month/ date format, today, March 14 or 3/14 is Pi Day for you. If you don’t, well, you will just have to wait a few more months, until Pi Approximation Day on July 22 (22/7)."

"Intellectual" is a rough word to hang on a jazz guy. The intellectual crowd won't believe and the jazz crowd will scorn it. Truth is, most of the top improvising artists were deeply intellectual and knowledgable about all kinds of music, including "classical," whatever the fudge that means.

I was also beyond thrilled see Fabio post 100%
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Santos L Halper:

OK this sounds like them; maybe that was the previous piece...both good.
Avatar 11:13am Carmichael:

Is this the schmoozefest?? Hiya Doug and everyone. I love you all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am joe:

Well Uncle Michael I know that a bit of Drummer in my headphones is a wonderful remedy for the chatter (for which I have lost all tolerance for :) ) that is taking place around me in the office
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

The Fabio/Clay Pigeon tag team is getting to take on epic proportions.

Woohoo, Carmichael!
Avatar 11:14am ndbob:

that's great Doug!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17am Andrew Waterloo:

A little part of me wanted to see the station reach 100% just to prove that it was so much more than the Best Show, also that there were a lot of different reasons Tom got such big numbers.
Avatar 11:19am Lewis:

@Andrew Waterloo - well said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am joe:

@Andrew I had that little piece of wanting to being able to prove what I already knew which was that the station was not a one trick pony, and to prove that even more I think this is one of the lower years that JM in the AM had too.
Avatar 11:21am Van in DC:

@joe 11:14 - exactly!! Thank GOD for WFMU and GTDR and my headphones in order to drown out the endless BS sessions in my cubicleland!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am joe:

@doug oh my god Doug Fabio/Clay is one of the greatest natural radio things to ever happen. What a story of accidental comic book chemistry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am listener james from westwood:

Van, I understand completely. WFMU has kept me out of jail in that respect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Tom and the Best Show's contribution to the universe of WFMU lovers has been magnificent. But you're right. For the station to thrive in the shadow of losing Tom's program is monumental, both symbolically and financially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am joe:

Yeah no disrespect to Tom he is one of the hardest working men I have ever encountered and I say that with not being a fan of his show, but I will never take away what a wonderful person he is and how much he bled and sweat for his show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

The Fabio/Clay Pigeon pairing is purely the accident of having CP's show follow Fabio's when it first hit the FMU airwaves. It's fun to try to imagine the other possible happy accidents if Clay Pigeon had entered the schedule on a different day/time.

Tom Scharpling earned his popularity one listener at time. He absolutely wrote the book on how to reach through the medium to connect with listeners and invite them to participate in a collaborative experience. He has been an absolute inspiration to me as I try to grow and evolve Give the Drummer Radio. I don't have .05% of the charisma and guts that he has, but even just a little effort in this direction can transform the experience—on both sides of the radio show experience. Tom deserves every ounce of success he's got coming to him.
  11:30am Cecile:

Joe, ITA about Fabio and Clay. Natural hilarity ensues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

Be careful, I may say "experience" three or four more times in the this commenting... experience.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31am listener james from westwood:

I can't wait for the next album from The Doug Schulkind Experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

This band playing now is actually Ornette Coleman's quintet. Must have been for contractual reasons that the LP was issued under Paul Bley's name.
Avatar 11:32am Van in DC:

Was it a big hit when Steinski left? Were there similar misgivings about upcoming marathons? That was all way before my time, so just asking.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32am listener james from westwood:

And excellent points about Tom's show, all. He was on a bit late for me to catch all 3 hours each week, but those archives are the sort of gold that makes real gold look like lead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am joe:

This is a great set Doug thank you

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Stay tuned for Uncle Michael and Hinky DInky Time, up next here on the stream. Playlist page here: wfmu.org...

@Van
Steinski's show never had the following Tom S. has created. It was only on for a year here and there and I'm not sure it was ever on during a marathon until I re-ran the show on the stream last year.
  11:37am Cecile:

I think people had a wake up call when Scharpling left and really took it on themselves to really earnestly fundraise on air. I've never heard Bryce speak so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

For many years, the Jewish music and information show, JM in the AM, which airs on terrestrial WFMU, 6-9am every weekday, brought in 1/3 of WFMU's overall take during the marathon. But that number his slipped from that lofty mark over the years.
  11:38am Cecile:

Of course the first week, I kept writing, "Bryce, talk now" on the board.
Avatar 11:39am Van in DC:

Works calls...gotta run, thanks Doug!
Avatar 11:39am Carmichael:

Steinski's product was just staggering. The toil and diligence he must have put into each episode probably shocked all the other deejays. Each episode is a friggin' work of art.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Hi again.

Another sad drummer coda to relate, belatedly: I found out this week that the drummer Dick Berk passed away last month. He played on Ted Curson's Tears for Dolphy.
  11:41am Cecile:

Has the listenership declined for JM, Doug?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:42am listener james from westwood:

I hadn't realized that there's a whole program week on a dedicated JM stream now, too. Good to see Nachum and associates have found some room in the infinite space of the stream to grow, as GTDR has.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Santos L Halper:

Congrats on your goal Doug and thanks for a great show! Also appreciated was your info on the archival marathon footage; you should record a commentary track or some subtitles for that!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am listener james from westwood:

@Carmichael: True that. All that was manually compiled and edited. Doug, did you once cite a 20-hour prep figure for a single-hour Steinski show, or am I dreaming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Cecile
I don't think the JM in the AM listenership has declined, but it has gotten older and has not expanded with the Internet the way the freeform side of WFMU has.

@Santos L. Halper
It was great fun watching those old WFMU marathon videos. I'd never seen them before. I watched the with my 13-year-old daughter whose jaw was on the floor the whole time. She recognized me before I did. THAT'S YOU WITH THE MARACAS, she screamed!

Yes, Steinski spent at least 20 hours producing each 1-hour show. I heard Clay Pigeon say the same thing about his program during the marathon! The shows with man-on-the-street interview segments take a huge amount of production work. Totally awesome.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

I yelled the same thing when I saw the maracas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Heh heh! I finally beat you to it Uncle Michael!
  11:49am Cecile:

That kind of work to product ratio is why I never went into music production as a field.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

I think most people have that kind of reaction to maracas, frankly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Andrew Waterloo:

The fun thing about Clay was that he described producing his show by basically sitting on his living room floor in front of double tape deck.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Uncle Michael:

I know...but I didn't want to get out of the habit.
Avatar 11:51am ndbob:

excellent show Doug! - and an excellent chat as well
Avatar 11:51am Lewis:

Clay's on the street stuff is *really good* and as I learn to to a bit of *digital* editing and learned he does it with tape, my jaw drops closer and closer to the floor. To say nothing of his ability to get people to talk (slight return to the transition with fabio).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Just because the next show will suck...it doesn't mean the chat has to!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:53am listener james from westwood:

Oh, pshaw on the suckage. Even those speakers are shaking in anticipation over there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Ike:

Only catching the last few min., but looks like v. interesting comments here & cool sounds. And Doug, you are very charismatic IMHO.
Avatar 11:53am Lewis:

@not to worry @UM - I will follow you to Topeka with only a slight interruption as I start and stop the stream to fix the stuttering that seems to ensue when we move from Pittsburgh to Kansas (aint technology grand!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54am Uncle Michael:

so grand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

I spent about 30 hours editing out the clicks and pops on the tracks on my marathon premium. When I listened back to the masters, it sounded like I'd never touched them. Sigh. In my mind's ear, I know they sound better.

Hi Ike! Asthmatic, maybe...

Groovy wibble warble on this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

OMG, I will not get to fit in one last BURNER from Ghana at the end. You will have to tune in next Friday to hear it!

Loved, loved, loved doing the show. More than I could ever say.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56am Jeff Golick:

Superb-o, el-Doug-o!
Avatar 11:56am Carmichael:

I used to do radio production back in the pre-digital days. Tape Splicer was pretty much my job title.
  11:56am Cecile:

I did a lot of tape splicing back in the day. Crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Gimmee a razor blade and some editing tape, Carmichael & Cecile, any day.
  11:57am Cecile:

Later all ya'll

Hope to catch you next week.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:58am Uncle Michael:

Great show today, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Ike:

If JM was a little low this yr., it was prob. because Limbaugh did not pledge this year.
Avatar 11:59am Carmichael:

And sticky tape!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Artie:

Razor blades and that little divoted fine metal cutting block. Straight or angled? I was angled.
