two friends and i randomly stubled into CBGBs the night of our high school graduation and saw the costumeless GWAR side project "The Dave Brockie Experience". Dave did not disappoint. seeing GWAR the following year was probably the single greatest concert of my teenage years.

My bad. I've had passing exposure to GWAR, much more substantial to Hawkwind. Never knew the names of the former band, much less that the guy's real last name is Brockie! Great tribute here from the NYT:

Randy Blythe, the lead vocalist for the metal band Lamb of God, recalled Mr. Brockie’s humor in a post on Gwar’s Facebook page: “Right now, if I were to truly honor Dave in the way HE would do it if it were ME that had died, I would make a completely tasteless joke about his death.
