Important question: For this Simpsons roundtable discussion, Amanda, was the table really round?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm

Tots talked about that episode, "A Milhouse Divided," on last week's show! It is one of my all-time favorites, probably top 5.

@Doug, well, there was no table at all. But our eyeballs were perfectly round, so does that count for something?

@ljfw: I remember, fondly, watching someone's Simpson's screensaver for what seemed like a very long time. This was...early 1990s? Mr Burns would come in periodically and say things like "lollygagger!...layabout!....get back to work!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm

Get it? No table!

Never saw the clips on the Tracey Ullman show, but my first exposure was in like Feb 90, when I was on vacation down in NC visiting friends at Duke. We went to an off-campus party, and someone put a tape of like 6 1st-season episodes on. So I mainlined a shitload of them in 1 sitting.

Saul of Tarsus did not return home with a greater sense of mission.
Avatar 12:22pm
Dan B From Upstate:

You're not far off, Jake. There was a time, prolly in the early 2000s, where I could relate any topic of conversation to something that happened on the simpsons. It was such a huge part of my formation in the 90s. That and Mystery Science Theater, but that's another conversation.

In Living Color and The Simpsons were same night, Sun IIRC.

Cultural refs in the classic Simpsons showed the writers' love of 50s-70s TV and movies. Krusty is a major nexus of that sort of writers' nostalgia. Def. embiggened my 20-something's trove of classic-TV trivia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm

Jeff:

I have a confession / observation to make: I was obsessed with The Simpsons as good comedy and as a smart cultural mirror and touchstone from their start as misshapen scratchy drawings on the Tracy Ullman Show through their evolution in later years... but when South Park came out, it seemed as if the world had changed. The torch had been passed, and I pretty much forgot The Simpsons were still on.

Maybe the Simpsons writers were still doing great, smart work - but it just stopped occurring to me to look and see what they were up to.

Did anyone else have this experience?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
listener james from westwood:

I stopped watching the Simpsons after there was a reference to "crumping." I knew at that point it had passed me by. South Park exists in more of an eternal now with contempt for all sides as it reacts to current events, so it may stay fresher?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
listener james from westwood:

"The Simpsons are going to Antarctica!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Amanda:

@Jeff, I think a lot of people had this experience. Some jumped ship during South Park's ascendance, others during Family Guy's. Speaking as a 30something I can remember the buzz surrounding SP among college kids. In 1996 we all piled into someone's dorm room to watch Simpsons together each Sunday but by 1998 we didn't anymore.

my other favorite simpson's moment is when they watch the Mr. Sparkle commercial and Bart, without missing a beat, calls homer 'Fish-bulb'.

Our local station used to do two episodes between 5-6 every night in the 90s and early 2000s. We're close enough to canada that the local cbc affiliate also did an episode from 5-5:30 every night. Three episodes a night. It was a great time. Then the CBC station lost their rights, and at the same time, our local affiliate moved the reruns to 12:30-1 AM. I haven't gotten to watch the show regularly since about 2003. I still watch on Sunday nights. I don't care. I still love it, but I really miss the old ones.
