I always found it interesting that May 1st is Labor day in other countries in a large part because of an event that took place in the US, while the US hold it in September. The history is fascinating to me.
Avatar 3:53pm

It would seem much of US holiday setting is based on what's best for consumerism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
DCE:

that's completely true, kat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
fred:

In that particular case, it's also a celebration of hypocrisy: other countries made it a holiday in honor of workers crushed in the US, while crushing their own. I'm not shocked the Cleveland administration preferred another date

@kat330: of course, the "face 2 face" one. Obviously, I don't know him personally. He did generate interesting discussions. I was just an onlooker, but he came across as despised for his technique, but lines got blurry when discussing technique in context of his aim. Some said he was just building his brand, others that his limitations jelled enough with his discourse for it to be an aesthetically valid statement. Then others said the aesthetic position explained the chosen technique. Divisive, in a way that's hard to make sense of. The criticism is easy to dismiss as sour grapes, but he's indeed building a brand. Some of his critics readily acknowledge it's what's needed to make it.
I personally don't like his work, but these conversations made clear I'm in no position to have a valid opinion

@kat330: In part, it's because the Beatles basically wrote the book about pop songs. What are you going to rebel against then? In another, more serious way, it became a baseline. Not many ways to top that in that direction. Not that they tried to do this, I even suspect that that enshrinement was more of a factor in their split than Yoko One. It's not that I didn't grow up with them. It's that they defined the musical environment in which I grew up. Then the Clash came. Not smashing the walls, just opening the windows

The Beatles were a formative component of my youth. It's hard to view them objectively. I do think there was something almost sui generis about them, all hype aside. But I never forget that the group went well beyond the Fab Four from Liverpool. George Martin, Billy Preston ... amazing collaborators.

Yoko was - / - is - certainly jealous & somewhat possessive of John. Aren't we all?!: that's why it's an issue & we have this sort of discussion.
...But for any single 'event' - I go w/ Epstein dying being responsible for their demise as band. No one could 'Manage' TheBeatles - certianly not themselves (buncha musicial counter-culturists)...
...Lennon said in early 70s - you wanna know what TheBeatles would be like *now* - just play our solo albums together!; pity that they couldn't have stuck together - but McCartney & others hang whilst John explored where he did ? John hang whilst Paul thrives playing Live & mastering the Top40 in his 70s stylee ? They'd just outgrown each other, is all...

The parenthetical refers to the anterior verb, btw. I didn't meet him last week.

...some people will just never get to Yoko - but then - TheBeatles started to noticibly lose people by 1965 w/ their progressions anyhow...altho' Psychedelia brought a huge amount of the human race into the Avant Guard successfully !!
- I've said before here I rate George Martin pretty high in it all - Producer/Arranger of *those* recordings - that's almost Writer, & the man who sealed the deal on their success, really...

If you're ever asked for an example of understatement, you could do worse than "some people will just never get to Yoko."

@fred: My primary not-commenting period was/is specified in my profile for the most part. The overall lessening of commenting has to do with 1) Can I spare the time (and put my music production aside)? and 2) Do I feel good afterwards or lousy (with certain group dynamics)?

@RRN63: No joke there, I think Yoko Ono is interesting as an artist. Not just then (though here contribution to Fluxus shouldn't be overlooked). Now too. Well, now, I'm not so lucky, but I saw her work a couple of years ago, and there's actually something potent there. She used photos of John and Sean there, but it was soon obvious it was just another possible way into the main thing, which was fragile yet strong, but thoroughly naive. I think she owns that, and the emotional appeal was potent. And she still tries to drag you in, to involve you. Even when she doesn't, I have to applaud the craftsmanship of the trap. Which isn't really one. She's awfully smart

gene santoro once wrote that yoko didn't ruin john's career, he ruined hers. and while they clearly wanted to work together and be together, there is a valid point there. ono wasn't the kind of artist who needed to be working with eric clapton or known by millions. i like a lot of her records but she still suffers from having been put on the pop market. it's very possible she could have been much more interesting if she hadn't been so popular and so unpopular.

Yoko's relevance is just so obvious to some of us more comfortable w/ the Avant
...like most prejudices, people think her talentless who know the least about her oeuvre...
...John said if he could do it over again, he'd be the kind of Artist who worked in obscurity. In light of the Reality of what happened ! - that's...
...Of course, the whole thing about that whole Era is the interplay & collisions of Art & Pop ; that's where all of us here live, isn't it - ?!...

That's a tall glass of counterfactual, Kurt. It makes sense that mutually sacrificed aspects of their careers. They were a married couple, and celebrities to boot. I don't know much of her pop stuff, but I love "Kiss, Kiss, Kiss." It's the one Yoko record remaining in my collection, a 45rpm.

@kat330: How socially awkward... It never occurred to me to check your profile, so I didn't know about it (I always wonder about whether it's a breach of privacy to look at someone's profile). Still, not speaking for any community, just for myself: I missed you, so please don't disappear again. I'm just saying that as egoistically as possible
