I understand your odd feeling, as I've had interviews that felt challenging, if not failures. You seem to meet people where they live, while asking questions that the rest of us have. Jonathan (strange but comfortable to use his first name) seems very much in the moment. That doesn't always make for a probing interview.

However..."I'm not unique..." Yes, he stole all that stuff, and built something else.

...maybe what emerges: it takes some defensiveness to remain 'childlike' & direct ('simple' - what have you) - & remain productive & successful this way...An Artist has to be very focused on the unique & particular 'vision' (s)he does - or why bother ? How else could it be done & work?

It says a lot about Michael that he was so patient with questions he found odd. I heard him do an interview at NPR years ago, and he was so impatient with the guy's -- well -- NPR questions that he pretty much ripped the interviewer a new one right on the air. I can't believe that they even aired it, but I guess their purpose was to show what a jerk he was. I'm sure the NPR faithful agreed with that, but I thought "Way to go, Jonathan,I've been waiting for years to hear someone give these brunch-with-the-Times clowns what's coming to them."

The problem with this interview, as was the problem with a lot of interviews they did with off-off-mainstream performers they were doing, is that the interviewer clearly knew absolutely nothing about Jonathan's music, had spent maybe half an hour boning up on it, and was asking trite, meaningless questions. Most artists in that situation would put up with it but Jonathan was having none of it, and rightly not IMO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm

?:

Great job, Michael, especially considering that Hippie Johnny's nemesis was on the move for most of the interview. You didn't get unnerved when Jonathan was evasive or didn't buy the premise of a question. We ended up getting a window into Jonathan's way of thinking and making music.
Thanks, Michael.
