@Jeff: Ice, protein powder, mixed berries, banana, and kale. The result is sort of mauve.

@ndbob: Veggies go nicely into an omelet filling. I'll saute peppers & shallots sometimes for mine.
@Jeff: I have superlative pastries and bagels within walking distance. If I don't mainline the vitamin sludge I'm at risk of being tempted out by one of those cartoon scent-hands from the Warner Bros. cartoons.

@anyone/all: Happy 2015! And now for something completely different: Irrespective of FMU ending 2014 by reducing its ratio of women DJs (bad enough), what I've noticed is possibly (probably) a worse M/F atio is the number of female artists on playlists compared with men. Certainly nowhere close to 51% of the total.

Has an objective statistics study been done on WFMU's M/F ratios by anyone? Does the lack of female representation even bother anyone at the station or you commenters? Doubt if female DJs even get close to 51% here, there or anywhere. Can FMU pledge to at least make some inroads into this imbalance in 2015 and beyond? Would be a swell resolution.

Jeff Golick:

@Rev Rabbit: hey hey, say hey, kid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
listener james from westwood:

I was sad to see fewer women on the schedule, for whatever reason they were absent, and it would indeed be interesting to line up the M/F artist ratio, esp. comparing women's playlists to men's. Considering DJs come up thru the ranks as volunteers, expanding awareness of that process so women who might want to DJ would be one way to at least address the DJ gender ratio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am
listener james from westwood:

Julie, for instance, seemed to play a goodly share of women. But Diane Kamikaze's show is metal-oriented, a genre that seems to skew male.
Avatar 9:56am
kat330:

@James: First, thanks for the courtesy of replying. Yeah, like I said, I doubt the female DJs improve on the M/F artist played ratio. Just so sad to listen to hour after hour where not a SINGLE woman artist is heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am
Jeff Golick:

HNY, @kat330! That's an incredibly fine point you raise. When similar studies have been done on, say, the NYT Book Review, the results are grim and startling.

While drawing up this particular playlist, I did note that I'd filled the hour with white dudes. (I actually tend to notice race more than gender.) It's for sure something I'll strive for -- more balance.

ndbob:

excellent show Jeff!
Avatar 9:58am
kat330:

And then when they are, they are either on staff or closely connected to staff. Any contemporary outsiders have to have the highest production values -- vocal / instrumental, etc. -- whereas the lower fi and grungier the male artists, the better. It's so puzzling and difficult to wrap my brain around.

(It's a little harder to achieve sex/gender parity on D:O Radio. And fwiw, Jeff and I have found planning "ladies only!" sets to be less than satisfying, and perhaps a tad pandering?)
Avatar 10:00am

@Jeff: Thanks, I appreciate it! First requires listening to more female artists though. I don't know how much Brian Turner influences?

This schedule change was a big one - & many were a bit disgruntled by it. I don't accuse anyone of a bias against lady DJs, & I don't want to comment on the whole process of how Programs are chosen & let go; sufice to say that the Programs off the shcedule that had lady DJs couldn't have been let go on merit!

Thanks, @duke, @ljfw, for being here.
And belated welcome, βrian!

And, @kat330, as far as music that's played, I can't speak for anyone else at FMU, but BT has zero influence for me and Jeff J.

kat330:

@Jeff: Already signed out but I wanted to say NO, please, to "ladies-only" sets. YES, that is pandering and not at all what this female wants to hear. FREE FORM should encompass it all, and it includes a world that is 51% female.
