Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20am Maggie B.:

wow, Doug, a close friend is going through the same thing. She had a good accounting job, lost that, was unemployed for a long stretch and now is working at a retail outlet. her schedule is unpredictable and her hours are long enough to keep her from being considered a full-time worker, and unable to see friends and family. i hope your schedule's not so brutal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Maggie B
I told them I couldn't work Tuesdays or Fridays. The rest is in their hands. I just love people nearly a third my age saying to me, "Ok go take your unpaid 30-minute meal break."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24am Maggie B.:

oh man.
Avatar 10:25am Cecile:

unpaid? in PA? wow, that sucks. We used to get paid lunch if we worked more than 6.5 hours in Michigan in the 80s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26am Brian in UK:

There is also 'Yes, we have no bananas' A charming litttle ditty.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26am Andrew Waterloo:

I seriously doubt these retail environments are really saving that much money by hiring more people and spending so much of their resources micromanaging people, their schedules, and their bathroom breaks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:27am Brian in UK:

The zero hours contracts here are vile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

In Pennsylvania, workers have to be given 30-minute breaks before they reach six consecutive hours. And the meals breaks are unpaid. For an 8-hour shift, I am actually "at work" for 8.5 hours. Every minute I am working, I am being timed so they can see if I am moving fast enough. Maybe it is THEY who are doing the anthropological experiment, not me.
Avatar 10:29am Cecile:

their margins are razor-thin, and I think they try to drive off people who might question things to replace them with people who would be content no matter what.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29am Andrew Waterloo:

Unpaid lunch is standard now, which basically means everybody works an 8.5 hour day if they are full time.
Avatar 10:30am still b/p:

gif or no gif, my connection was a balky choky stalling bastard at first today. If I tell you about it, I'd sound like Ralphie after he has taken a BB to the face on Christmas morning and is giving Mom his gaspy crying bullshit tale.

And so I missed the job announcement. Where will you mind the store, Doug?

A couple of people advised me to join the seasonal L.L. Bean phone gang up here, and though it's not the same as direct in-person retail, and friends had no horror stories, I still might prefer a BB to the eye...every fifteen minutes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31am Maggie B.:

@Doug, Brian, Andrew & Cecile - damn, welcome to feudalism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Stanley:

@Doug - Hi, if its any consolation, I'm self-employed and I work like a fucking idiot.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33am Brian in UK:

@Maggie at least then we got to sleep with the animals now we are treated like them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:33am Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile. Bukowski actually wrote about that in Ham and Rye, and he wrote about incongruous time contraints at the post office... so there is really nothing new there. I think the real difference today is that they treat employees like simple robots with no expectation of working effectively outside a tightly defined regiment. That's why they bring in 3 cashiers for 2 hours during the peak instead of having a couple full time employees that can be shifted between departments.
Avatar 10:33am Cecile:

Maggie, I know. Been there.

And I have a decent job now, but no paid lunch. I can deal, but still.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:34am Maggie B.:

there's a costco in Pittsburgh - i imagine no one is giving up their job there, Doug? Supposedly they are the most humane retail employers around.
Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

But that's one of the things that unions tend to give up to keep other things.
Avatar 10:35am Jesse K:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am Brian in UK:

Stanley there must be a reason for that.........you must stop dressing up like a giant penis at work.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am Andrew Waterloo:

@Maggie.. ironically, CostCo's 'over paid' workforce is also one of the most efficient.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36am Maggie B.:

I hear ya, Cecile. I'm clinging to the very decent job I've had since '86, but always wondering when I'm gonna get the ax and wind up in retail purgatory.

Avatar 10:40am still b/p:

Good good good luck, Doug.

@ Jesse -- Boston -- Olympics contender! Thaaaat's gonna be contention-free, and if they're awarded the games, it's gonna be all efficient, wisely planned, reasonable in cost and clean from every angle.
Avatar 10:40am Cecile:

they pay what your average temp office employee gets. Which is $1-3 more than most retail people at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Stanley:

I wish I had an attitude more like Henry Chinaski
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43am Andrew Waterloo:

@Brian. I completely Dedicated employees make a significant but silent contribution to any organization. You give someone a decent wage and treat them well they will give you more than you ask for. If you don't, you're going to waste your time training people, micromanaging them, and replacing stolen merchandise.
Avatar 10:44am Cecile:

some people see only numbers - some shrinkage today is cheaper than training in the short term, and it looks good on the balance sheet.

Cobbler Reliable?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Yes, as long as you don't overbake and forget the nutmeg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
Crazy Synthstuff. Sounds like a character from Peewee's Playhouse.
  11:00am Dean:

And how is that ol' nut Meg?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
I wouldn't know. I have a Meg nut allergy.

Tuxedo cuffs??!!
This is actually the more boring of the relevant scenes from "Swing Time." The better moment is later in the movie when a tailor is apoplectically opposed to the cuff job.

Just checked my email. Oh no, I missed "Destroy the Nihilistic Picnic"!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Hi, again. Dressed and everything now, thanks for asking.

ARASHI is also the name of a ragingly fine album that came out in 2014: trostrecords.bandcamp.com...
  11:06am Dean:

An oeuf with the punning! There has been a younger Pulitzer recipient for music. In 2013 Caroline Shaw won for her Partita for 8 Voices. She was 31 years old. Wynton Marsalis won in 1997 at 36, the same age as Aaron Jay Kernis when he won the next year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

@Parq
We didn't destroy the entire picnic. We preserved its nose cryogenically. For future generations.

I mentioned this on another playlist... it turns out Bill Exly from Nihilist Spasm Band was one of Malcolm Gladwell's high school teachers.

Why is it during Give the Drummer Some that I tend to have wonderfully therapeutic, hourlong conversations with one particular friend? Always with her during this show. She must like hearing it in the background.

Also, hat tip to the "Sleeper" ref to Parq. Watch out for steamrollers!

@LJFW I have the same problem. I seem to get long skype calls/meetings during GTDS. The universe is plotting against us.

"Ye Marhaban" is Arabic, I believe, for "Shake It Off."

@duke, I had a Wed. conf. call dead smack in the middle of Nazario Scenario for a year. Awful. Not entirely displeased that contract's over. This person today actually pairs nicely w/ GTDS, so I didn't lower the volume.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

I like the idea of music/person pairings, like wine/food.

The gif WAS animated, but I loaded a file that was way too crazyass big for a re-loading page and it was gumming up the works. So I freeze-framed the gif and there we are.
