Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm

Yah, just checking out Lee Sklar's history now.
  9:34pm
Carmichael:

Tommy Bolin on guitar. Sounds strange to say it out loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Billy Cobham played session on Afternoon Delight as well.
Avatar 9:35pm
Dave Mandl:

@UM: You have very good taste.
Avatar 9:36pm
Dave Mandl:

Lee Sklar is a hot-sh*t session guy,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Uncle Michael:

I discovered this album about a year ago. My wife has the LP and was down in the basement with it cranked on her stereo while she was on the stationary bike and I had to run downstairs to find out what it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Uncle Michael:

You do too, Dave! thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I found used copy on vinyl a few years ago and was pulled in by the roster. Then someone pointed out the Massive Attack connection.
  9:37pm
Carmichael:

I remember Sklar from James Taylor's Mud Slide Slim LP. How far apart can 2 albums be?
Avatar 9:38pm
Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: He played with James Taylor for years. Probably still does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm

Leland's a terrific musician.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm

What's the Massive Attack connection?
  9:40pm
JakeGould:

Dude has a massive oeuvre. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Uncle Michael:

are massive ouvres like huevos grande?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Massive Attack samples the bassline in stratus for Blue Lines I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm
Uncle Michael:

Ah.
  9:42pm
JakeGould:

“Massive Ouvres” is my new jam band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
coelacanth:

the first cut on blue lines; then bush used the same bass line in one of their songs too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Attack of the Massive Ouvres was the name of my student film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Andrew Waterloo:

It's actually "Safe from Harm" that uses the sample.
Avatar 9:47pm
D in Miami:

That's a great Najat Aatabou sample in there!
  9:49pm
Carmichael:

Is this the Norwegian band When, from the 80s?
  9:52pm
cheri:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm

Night, cheri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Uncle Michael:

Dave, no one's show fits their time slot quite like yours does. It's just right for my weekend wrap-up and turning my attention to the week ahead. I don't know it that makes sense but it's always just right head space for me.
Avatar 10:09pm
Dave Mandl:

@UM: Thanks. I like this timeslot a lot.
Avatar 10:11pm
D in Miami:

Damn! This is good!!
Avatar 10:13pm
Dave Mandl:

@D: That Eternal Tapestry CD is fantastic.
  10:17pm
Carmichael:

This is the 3rd Mu-related song I've heard this week on FMU.
  10:21pm
phat:

I was just thinking, "this sounds like the Holy Mountain soundtrack" and then I looked who was playing. I'm digging this.
Avatar 10:25pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- second UM's point: I liken Sunday P.M.s FMU (Gaylord-Blumin-Mandl) to a block or two of kewl comfortable cultural yet intimate venues I retreat to (altho' my own werkweek is 'inside-out')...(note also that Monica used to be part of it, as one place in those blocks in that conceit)...
  10:25pm
Carmichael:

Eternal Tapestry apoear to be a Portland OR band.
  10:31pm
shanghi1:

sting is irish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Uncle Michael:

I may still have this LP in the basement. Hmmm...
Avatar 10:32pm
Dave Mandl:

@shanghi1: Really? He must have to moved to England when he was pretty young. Was in Curved Air among other groups.
  10:34pm
JakeGould:

Hmmm… Sting is not Irish.
  10:36pm
Carmichael:

I'm Irish. Gordon Sumner is not.
  10:37pm
JakeGould:

if Sting were irish that would be a fairly well promoted fact… Maybe even horsecrap “Who is better: Sting or Bono?” nonsense in trashy local papers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Ike:

As a teen, when I did not have such good taste, I was a fan not just of the Police but also Sting's solo work, but I never heard that Eberhard Schoener track. That's a great new one to me. But I believe some elements of that may have been re-used or sampled elsewhere...?
Avatar 10:41pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Gordon seems quintessentially English.
Avatar 10:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- pretty far NorthEastern: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
joeray:

I saw the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in Providence. It was raining that night, and the rain was leaking on the stage (on my head) and the concert power had to be shut off for a bit. Phil Collins came on stage and did card tricks and told jokes!
Avatar 10:46pm
D in Miami:

Anybody know the significance of the name of this album? I've always wondered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Uncle Michael:

Well, it's set in NYC and I suppose there's "And the lamb shall lie down with the lion."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Uncle Michael:

King James:

"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them."
Avatar 10:51pm
Dave Mandl:

@joeray: Phil Collins is a very funny guy. Seriously.
  10:52pm
Carmichael:

"Shall lead them in a kick line tribute to Al Jolson and Ethel Merman."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Uncle Michael:

I must take my leave. Thanks for music, Dave. Goodnight, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
joeray:

@Dave Mandl: And he was a real trouper during that Providence concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

This site claims that "On Broadway" recalls a hit from The Drifters in 1963 - www.songfacts.com...

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- title always just sounded like Slaughter of the Innocent & Showbiz to me - ironic contrast of the vulnerable w/ the stereotype of the toughest performance context...but I'm *still* ignorant of even the 'good' Genesis, & don't know the album 'concept' ...
  11:30pm
cheri:

may I just add that this show was really mindblowing, thanks again dave!
Avatar 11:31pm
Dave Mandl:

You may. Thanks very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

Thank Glob I'm not watching the Oscars. This is much better. I'm hearing that they're even more of a drag than a certain fake commenter. One wag just said, "Richard Linklater is filming all of us growing up while watching this."
  11:38pm
rw:

Mindblowing?! But I just got here! Arrgh.
Avatar 11:40pm

Was trying to explain the "Paisley Underground" to my 36 year old friend the other day. I used the Dream Syndicate as an example. Unfortunately he didn't know Dream Syndicate.
  11:41pm

Thanks Dave. I'll download the show in an hour and listen on my way to work tomorrow.
Avatar 11:42pm

...& what would the term 'Neo-Psychedelic' mean to somebody in 2015 ??...
  11:46pm

Maybe we're to the meta-neo-psychedelic stage by now.
  11:49pm
mark Flynn:

Great song by Dream Syndicate. Highly overrated band back in the day. I was doing radio them and the new gen of djs were all about Yo Le, Dino Jr, and the ilk. It was an interesting era musically for me.

just want to say Dave Mandl's show is the reason I discovered WFMU 10 years ago. As a subscriber and avid listener I still think the Mandl mix is a perfect way to feature avant garde music! thanks again and welcome back mr Mandl
