Jeff J:

Hey Glenn, Dean, and Duke! Great to see you all.

Dean - Hope you'll check out the shows in the archive. They're vacuum sealed for guaranteed freshness.
Avatar 12:14pm
glenn:

jazz history question - did duke / orchestra do the original version of caravan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I loved the two hours of Duke on Irwin's show (DE's 116th birthday) the other day, but he missed out on this one. Innovating to the very end...
Avatar 12:16pm
Jeff J:

Glenn - someone else got there first on Caravan, but Duke's version put the tune on the map.
  12:17pm
Santos L Halper:

Greetings Jeffs etc. Haven't heard this before. Duke been listening to some Ra...(and vice-versa of course)
Avatar 12:18pm
Jeff J:

Hey CWE - Hopefully we'll have a number of tunes that Irwin missed. Wish I had caught that show! Yep, Duke was making remarkable music until the end, a lot of which critics have yet to catch up with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Jeff Golick:

Hi, all! *This* is Loco Madi" -- jumped the gun a tad on the playlist...
Avatar 12:20pm
Jeff J:

hey Santos! I'm sure Duke was aware of Ra. And they both had an interest in exotica -- we're showcasing some of that a bit later...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Jeff Golick:

Happy to say we have no overlap with Irwin's Duke bday show, which you should listen to after this show, if you haven't already heard it: wfmu.org...
  12:38pm
Dean:

@glenn: See Wikipedia on "Caravan (1937 song)." The Ellington-led recording appeared in 1937, but there was a 1936 recording by Barney Bigard and his Jazzopaters [sic] with Ellington in the band. I'm trying in vain to find an article that confirms this.

Take me 2 Afrique!

Did this scene get cut from "Annie Hall"?

Sorry for the banging here -- the crew just beneath my feet decided to start hammering nails into the ceiling below my desk as that set break started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Jeff Golick:

The joint is jumping. The cat, too.
  1:05pm
Dean:

Oops. I meant Jeff J. Your voice was waning and warbling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Jeff Golick:

@Dean: I think that was in large part due to the shaking machinery on my end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Jeff Golick:

No one's drums sound like Jaki's.

Doug Schulkind:

Remember that ignorant spilge Adam Gopnik wrote about Ellington a few years ago? God that was ignorant spilge.
Avatar 1:17pm
Jeff J:

Hey UM!

Doug - I remember that Gopnik piece well. It was so beyond stupid that it "wasn't even wrong." Some new territory of cluelessness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Jeff Golick:

I do remember that I quickly forgot it, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff J
Criticizing a work of fiction is a whole different enterprise.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Uncle Michael:

I never criticize fiction. I just snarkily intone "pictures, or it didn't happen."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Doug Schulkind:

Gotta go stack the Triscuits. Have a killer 2nd 1/2 of the show, Jeffs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Doug! Here's hoping Marshall McLuhan doesn't pop out to tell you that you know nothing about his work.
Avatar 1:25pm
Jeff J:

@Doug - Ha! Too true about Gopnik's fiction. Good luck at work.
  1:45pm
Dean:

I just realized that Alison Gopnik is Adam's sister. She's an important psychologist at Berkeley, and she conducts work at the preschool where my kids attend(ed).
