hey Duke! Glad you're here. We're doing our bit for Ornette this week.

No such thing as too much Ornette
Avatar 9:02am
Jeff J:

Agreed! And we'll be hitting on a bunch of stuff that hasn't been aired elsewhere.

More Ornette! Great! sent a few suggestions to a friend who is a music fan but no jazz interest, suggested Lonely Woman and Theme from a Symphony from Dancing in your Head-knocked him out! People just don't get to hear this stuff! Not everyone would go for everything, but I know more music lovers could get into lots of it!

Jeff J:

doctorjazz - very true about the accessibility of the music and how there's lots of Ornette's music that people would love. Glad your friend got turned on to it!

This album made a huge impression on me when it came out, and is what first got me into Ornette.

jeffs! peoples! times squares!
Avatar 9:19am
Jeff J:

Hey Charlie! Hey Holland Oats!
This Times Square cut is what Ornette & Prime Time played when he was on Saturday Night Live, introduced by Milton Berle. They don't make TV like that no more.

Has anyone else made music quite like this? (If so, please send it to us.)
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:36am
doctorjazz:

It wasn't exactly the same, of course, but I'd say Ronald Shannon Jackson mined a bit of the same territory.
Avatar 9:44am
Jeff J:

doctorjazz - yes, RSJ's music is definitely cut from a similar Harmolidic cloth.
Avatar 9:45am
Jeff J:

*Harmolodic* - damn auto(in)correct.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 9:48am
doctorjazz:

Wasn't trying to be snarky (reads that way when I read it back), it was just such an open, rich source to mine. Of course, earlier, acoustic Ornette shows up in John Zorn and countless other players.

Doug Schulkind:

Hello Jeff and Jeff from Park Slope!
Avatar 9:55am
Jeff J:

Hey Doug! Good to see you. Wait, is that message coming from... inside the house?!
Avatar 9:57am
Jeff J:

doctorjazz - no snark detected on this end. speaking of zorn, we thought about playing some of his berserk ornette tribe "spy vs. spy." another time for sure though.
Avatar 10:07am
Jeff J:

45 years ago today, Capt. Beefheart released "Trout Mask Replica." Ornette cast a long shadow of that remarkable work.

Is the song cutting out for others as well?

I have to put my hand up and say it is in the main beyond my scope of comprehension. Thus far.

Hiya, @Artie! Hiya, @Kurt!

Folks, next week on D:O Radio, Kurt Gottschalk will be filling in, and spinning MORE ORNETTE. FOR FIVE HOURS, as he is also filling in for Amanda Nazario!

yeah, so leave me something to play!

And more Ornette coming next Wednesday, 9am to 2pm here on the Drummer Stream with guest host, the Minotaur Maximus himself, Kurt Gottschalk!

Hello Kurt. We are going to Brno in August to see the MotoGP. Any other sites to see whilst we are there?
  10:35am

Or in other words, what Jeff Golick said.
Avatar 10:36am
Kurt Gottschalk:

i've never actually been to brno - altho there's a chance i'll be there in august as well! hold on, tho, i think i can get you the name of a club to visit.

and hi, doug. thanks.
Avatar 10:38am
Kurt Gottschalk:

brian, look for a club called Flěda. they sometimes stream wfmu in there!
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:40am

Thanks Kurt. We arrive 13th from Vienna leaving 17th. I was hoping to catch some Janecek String Quartets but that is wishful.
Avatar 10:43am
Kurt Gottschalk:

ah well, if i make it there, it'll be later in the month. the club is owned by prokop holoubek who also manages the band dva, which you may have heard on fmu (ken's a big fan, for one). i think they have live music there too but i'm not sure.

Dean:

Seems to me Sign of Four with Metheny and Derek Bailey was also a bit of a shocker.
Avatar 11:24am
Jeff J:

@Dean - As was Metheny's Zero Tolerance for Silence, both of those records came after Song X. He has an adventurous side, including recently recording a solo guitar record of compositions written specifically for him by John Zorn.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:26am
doctorjazz:

OOps, the pop up stream has stopped working, seems to work on the regular FMU signal, hope it comes back...if not, see you in the archives...
  11:28am
Doug Schulkind:

Always have a hard time warning up to Metheny, but Song X taught me tolerance. That and Metheny's amazing public rant about Kenny G. Will always appreciate him for that.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 11:29am
fred:

@doctorjazz: pop-up stream is fine over here, maybe closing/opening your browser will fix it
  11:30am
Dean:

Sign of Four allowed me to forgive Metheny, whose ECM records I sold ad nauseum--and I do mean nauseum--when I was record store clerking. I know some of his Zorn stuff, but I've never heard of Zero Tolerance. Will explore!
Avatar 11:38am
Jeff J:

@Dean - I'm not a Metheny fan, but Zero Tolerance for Silence is his noise record. Came with a blurb from Thurston Moore even. His fans loathed it. It's worth seeking out.
  11:39am
Dean:

Better blurb, I bet, than Thurston could come up with: "His fans loathed it."
  11:40am
Dean:

Sometimes I wish bands like Boston, the Doobie Bros., and Hall & Oates would do noise records.

I went to a Pat Metheny concert once but I never felt that I saw him.

Dean I would agree except for Daryl Hall's voice. I know it is what you do with it.
  11:53am
Dean:

Brian, You're saying you would not want to hear Hall's attempt at noise? Or that in your estimation Hall has already produced noise? I know he worked with Fripp, which to this day seems weird. BTW, H&O (as opposed to holland oats) will play the venue across the street from where I work in late August. Truly, in the '70s when they were racking up hits, I never would have imagined such a juxtaposition.

Santos L Halper:

Great show Jeffs! Nice to hear lots of Ornette i don't have; thanks! Now to go look up that Pat Metheny rant : )
Wichita Falls was one of the first "jazz" records i got bowled over by as a youngster, so there's that...
