You didn't get any vinyl!!? Oh, cool, Lady Saw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm
Gary:

Don't think less of me, but I don't even own a record player, NGH! (I know, I know ...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
northguineahills:

I just got rid of some phonographs, they were taking up too much room (wife made me get rid of them), I used to have around 14, now I'm down to four.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Gary:

Oh man ... hey, I USED to have a Victrola, back when I lived in MPLS-STPL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Polyus:

Sometimes I envy you that, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Rich in Washington:

geez. Crate digging with someone else is so weird, esp. if you're used to going it solo all the time.
It's even weirder if your co-digger digs the kind of music you do or if you're both DJs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
northguineahills:

I think you were thinking of Dawn Penn for "Na Na Na".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Gary:

Yes, good memory, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm
Gary:

It was actually fun, Rich -- I tend to gravitate toward women's voices, no matter what kind of music I'm looking for, which I think puts me in something of a minority

Dean:

This says it's ca-DUG-'n (in the UK), which suggest the emphasis is on the second syllable: http://virtuallinguist.typepad.com/the_virtual_linguist/2011/10/the-pronunciation-of-cadogan-and-of-other-london-names.html This suggests it's ca-DOH-g'n, but it's unclear where the emphasis resides: http://forum.trojanrecords.com/viewtopic.php?p=167815&sid=315b4b13780608ff4f3d1dbd710be08f In any event, she's a librarian, which to this librarian is kinda cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Gary:

Aha -- thanks so much for that, Dean ... and, yeah that's very cool -- on both counts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm
Gary:

I was working at the Tower Records in San Francisco when this album came out -- we played it every day for ... I dunno ... the whole time I worked there, I think
  7:45pm
Dean:

My record store tenure ended before '88, but at Music Plus in SoCal I pretty much played Selling England by the Pound and Gang of Four's Entertainment every day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Gary:

Entertainment! I still love that album
  7:48pm
Dean:

Lord, yes.

Women's voices: If you have a taste for opera or vocal recitals--even if you don't--you must hear the recordings of Conchita Supervia. She died young following a stillbirth in 1936.

excellent first hour Gary - catch the rest on the archive as usual

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm

well, it does have Shintaro Katsu AND Jimmy Wang Yu, so it's pretty impossible not to love.

Zanzibar is half of the federated structure of Tanzania. The mainland half being Tanyanyika. Interesting as Zanzibar is Arab/Swahili and the mainland is African tribal groups.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Gary:

That explains this very Arabic-sounding track, yeah
Avatar 8:21pm

in a completely unshocking turn of events, i *love* this Teresa Tang song

Hello all! I may have some distaste for certain Haitian pirate radio broadcasters, but that set of music was nice. #notallhaitians? XD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm
Gary:

Ha! Hey there, Ike! I'm actually fascinated with pirate radio -- I want to read more about it in the UK and the birth of grime ...

oh man, someone help me out. i just heard a song on here i was loving and was trying to sort it out on the playlist and discovered my stream had been paused at some time so i was all outta sync. i don't even know by how much, but there was something that sounded very disco/no wave to me. funny/snotty sung in english by a female, didn't strike me as something i'd usually hear gary play. can anyone tell me what i heard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
northguineahills:

Any Wing, isn't she from Singapore?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Gary:

Lemme backtrack a bit and see, Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Gary:

Oh! I know, Kurt -- it was probably the Joanna Wang track
Avatar 9:11pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

YUP! that's it. thanks! great song. i came back in the room and had no idea what was going on. and thanks for your show, too. i listen far more than i comment (this might be the first time, actually).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Gary:

I'll send you the whole album, if you want -- it's pretty terrific!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Īke:

@Gary@9:05, oh yeah, UK pirate radio is much more interesting and influential than U.S. pirate radio. Brooklyn's pirates are mainly insular Caribbean and Orthodox Jewish stations aimed at particular communities. There's a 91.9 Spanish-language pirate in your nabe, but it's not especially interesting either.
Avatar 9:23pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

gary, that'd be great!
