I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar 3:44am

i'll have great dreams if you play koto music 'till 6!
...or -i'll stay awake to actually listen to it!
Avatar 4:09am
Mayuko:

You might have a dark dream, though, like some stories in Kabuki and Bunraku and stuff (this is Shamisen music for Bunraku.)
Avatar 4:09am
Mayuko:

probably dark, but beautiful dreams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10am
coelacanth:

...though i know already that whatever you have to play will maybe keep me awake to actually listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am
coelacanth:

no doubt!
i have a kabuki record. it's never been my first choice to put on at bed time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14am
coelacanth:

oh i misunderstood. you mean like the dark dreams in those stories; i thought you meant the kabuki would give me dark dreams!
Avatar 4:16am
Mayuko:

haha, yah I meant there are some pretty dark stories in those Japanese classical stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18am
coelacanth:

i guess if the music really represents, then it would give someone a dark dream!

Uncle Michael:

I'm awake briefly in Chicago and really enjoying the show, Mayuko. I can't wait to hear of yesterday's fill in on the archives.
Avatar 4:23am

Uncle Michael! I had a blast yesterday, thanks to you! Did a completely different show from this one.
  4:28am
Uncle Michael:

I'm glad you had a good time. I may not get to hear it until I return home. Now I will let your music lullaby me to sleep. Goodnight!

Satie?
Avatar 4:35am
Mayuko:

yah, and I think Vini Reilly before that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am
coelacanth:

(i think i only recognised the Satie.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50am
coelacanth:

Mayuko i think i should give sleep a chance. i'll be listening for a bit, then hearing.
but first- is that Seiji Tsurusawa track "classical"? it seemed in a classical style,to me, who knows nothing!
Avatar 4:54am
Mayuko:

I think Seiji Tsurusawa was designated a Living National Treasure recently if I remember correctly, so I guess that means his stuff is def classical. I'm not an expert of that kind of stuff either, but I heard that Seiji's style is rather avant-garde in that world, though.
Avatar 4:54am
Mayuko:

In any case thanks for listening, coelacanth! Hope you have beautiful dreams.
Avatar 4:56am
AdamFromOldeKenzo:

this is a very good song
Avatar 4:57am
Mayuko:

Agreed!

neil:

<also> knowing nothing...i just picked up <on ebay>2 cds by sweet robots against the machine. are they well known<or even popular> in japan? it seems to me that they have commercial appeal in a good pop sorta way...<just wonderin'>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06am
coelacanth:

right- as so many classics were, until 100-200 years later when it all sounds normal!

Thanks Mayuko!
i really hope you get a weekly show here, if that's what you want.

ciao peeps
Avatar 5:12am
Mayuko:

Thanks for your kind words, coelacanth, and have a good night.
Avatar 5:14am
Mayuko:

sweet robots against the machine? wasn't that Towa Tei's stuff?
Avatar 5:16am
Mayuko:

If that's what you're talking about, neil, Towa Tei is super popular in Japan. I love some of his stuff, maybe not all of them probably because of that "commercial appeal". Still love him though, played one track yesterday.
  5:20am
neil:

yeah towa tei. he seems to work with many different artists, i wasnt sure if its all considered towa tei's projects or if sweet robots against the machine had their own thing going on <like on tv or something else>regardless it is easy on the ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20am
coelacanth:

i really am off to bed,(i think!) but what you just said intrigues me. i've had many conversations with exchange students from japan, and never has any one been familiar with the traditional music. 1 seemed vaguely familiar with the name Michio Miyagi.
i'm glad you're more experienced than that!
(but i guess that's why you're with wfmu.)
  5:22am
Gary:

Just woke up -- howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am

( & the 1 is a music therapist)
Avatar 5:26am
Mayuko:

ahhh, Michio Miyagi. We hear him every year on new years day. He gets played literally everywhere like in all Seven Elevens. Good morning, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31am
coelacanth:

Gary Sullivan?
- i'm just going to bed!

well,i don't know what someone more knowledged in japanese classical or traditional music thinks of Miyagi; but i've Loved everything i've heard. (though not all interpretations...& haru no ami[?] is not my favorite.)
  5:33am
JoeRay:

Wonderful show! Are you going trying to get a permanent time slot at WFMU, Mayuko? I sure hope so!!!
Avatar 5:39am

Haru no Umi, that's the one exactly, the one we have been brainwashed with.

Thank you JoeRay! It must be fun to have a regular show but we'll see!

I missed the first part of the show, but it's nice to wake up to this morning music. Feels right with this peach-colored sky.

That's good news, Mayuko. There's a balloon festival here this weekend. I awoke too late to drive over to the site, though. I still have a chance at 6PM and tomorrow at 6AM, as long as there are calm winds. www.hotairballoon.com...

Mayuko, you should get a regular show. I clicky-starred your first three shows, and I want more. I'd say "demand", but I don't like demanding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm

re: Sanbaso, I was definitely not raised with it, never even set foot in Japan, but it still captures something unique. I don't know what it means, but it means something
Avatar 10:34pm

Thanks all for listening, and thank you so much for your encouraging words, fred! I do enjoy doing shows a lot - we'll see how it goes!
