@steve: Yeah, but the modern Veselka's is a brunch place. The original Veselka's was more like B&H dairy or any other lunch counter. You could walk in, sit at a stool, order two blintzes, one latke and a soda and then that’s it. Now it’s a big brunch production spot.

  6:20pm
JakeGould:

@Dale: Yup. Sad to realize the owners if the Kiev—who took over after the father/husband died—ruined Kiev and owned the buildings that exploded across the street from it. They’re to blame for the gas line tapping.

Hi, @Tommy! I'll tell K. you stopped by!
  6:26pm

@Gaylord: I heard of that. It was inside the building itself, right? And you could sit inside and look at all the diamond dealings below?
  6:32pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, all of the dairy restaurants I miss are from Brighton Beach back in the 1970s and 1980s. Damn, I could either get a slice of pizza or a knish (baked) from multiple storefronts without effort back then.
  6:34pm
P-90:

Leshko's was my fave down there, since the 80's when I knew lots of 20-somethings who pioneered living down there when it was still rough but affordable. I was glad to see those places hold on so long, bummed that they're finally gone. In L.A., movie biz folk from Back East would frequently wax all nostaligic and homesick for those places, they were totems of a particular NY epoch.

Gaylord Fields:

Linda Perhacs: First album came out in 1970; her second in 2014!
  6:38pm
JakeGould:

@P-90: A good part of the reason those places are gone has little to do with gentrification and more with a cultural shift in NYC Jewish culture where suddenly knishes and Jewish “soul” were looked down upon within the culture. Even today some relatives I talk to who I mention a knish to get upset as if I am showing off my poor roots a bit too much. It’s a fairly deep reason those places aren’t around but few want to talk about it.

@Jake@6:38, interesting. My WASP grandmother wouldn't listen to country & western music for a similar reason. She was from North Carolina and it reminded her too much of her poor upbringing. @Ike: Yeah, Brighton Beach still has great food. But honestly, it’s no longer the world I grew up in and I’m not into what it’s become. And yeah, one dirty secret about American cuisine is the second a cultural group can pull itself out of the true lower class, they tend to abandon things like food. I have relatives in my family who I know grew up eating knishes but now talk about falafel and pita bread as if that his what they grew up on. Fairly sick social issue of status if you ask me.

JakeG: Interesting perspective, but I recall those places as having more of a generically "Slavic" identity, rather than "Jewish Old Country" per se. I actually knew some kids from Russian/Polish/etc. Catholic backgrounds who thought of those places as "roots" cuisine for them too. Mostly it was cheap, substantial food for students and young musician/artist types. And open late.
