We'll explore some of the best -- and strangest -- the medium has to offer, from forgotten pre-revolution Iranian songbirds to Japanese and American tape experiments of the 1980s and '90s to obscure Brazilian punk, New Jersey Hardcore and Moroccan rock and roll.

Long ago, I saw a wreck in front of me on the freeway. I stopped to help a Viet lawn mower guy who got carted off to the hospital. After they left, I saw a cassette tape lying at my feet, inscribed with "Nguyen & Sons". I put it in my pocket and brought it home. I get skittish every time I think about playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Gary:

That's an incredible story, Carmichael, seriously. I'll be playing a Vietnamese cassette later this set with a story of its own ...
Avatar 7:18pm
northguineahills:

I actually have heard of Cyanamid (the band).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
Gary:

NGH! They're apparently legendary. If you Google them, one of the WFMU DJs proper -- I can't remember who now -- talks about working in a yard supply store (?) and meeting the singer, who buys a hose from him ... I gotta look it up, hold on!

Hey Gary, nice topic!
The Eshete track could be from this (not sure, I just tuned in):

It was John Allen: "I once sold Danny Cyanamid a garden hose. I was working in a garden center and I said "hey, you're the singer in Cyanamid.". He was like, "wow, no one in the world knows who I am...I guess I'm gonna have to buy this garden hose"

is there anything better than lost and found punk demos on cassette... i'll never stop kicking myself for selling all my homemade nj punk cassettes from the 90s...

Ooh, nice to catch Drakkar Band :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm
Gary:

I love this album so much, Holly ... Did you know that it was the best-selling album of all time in Cambodia? And self-released by Drakkar Band on cassette ... I think it went through three editions of 20,000, something like that, and then of course the Khmer Rouge put an end to all that the next year

I am embarrassed to admit I followed Klaatu up through whatever album had "Calling Occupants" on it. My grandmother loved them, btw. We sometimes listened to them together.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm

We actually had what looked like hail-sized rain drops during a downpour this morning, but it seems to have cleared up. I remember storms being more intense, generally, in the midwest
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm

It's been so wet this year. We just decided to postpone some tree work we had scheduled for next week due to the potential for heavy equipment on soft ground.

I'll get the raccoons posted in a couple of days. Two of the young are still too shy to pose. They headed back to the trees while mom and two others hung out.

Wow, just tuned in during The Jets, and looking over the playlist, Joseph Nechnvatal is the first one I've previously heard of! That's only surprising cause I was a 1980's cassettester myself (and deejay playing cassettes into the 90's)....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm

Hey, Little Fyodor -- I'm impressed you'd heard of him, actually ... I hadn't heard of him before doing research for that earlier show

It's definitely one of the best things about my home, Gary. I thought about that over the weekend when I was in Chicago. I like being connected to nature. Someday this place will be more than I can take care of and I'll really miss it.
