New Telescopes?? I saw a live set from a 2-person version of the band in about 2003, after many years of inactivity, and they were fully electronic at that point. Nice to hear the guitars again...

@Canterbury Elf: I love their first record, Taste, but I heard some of that electronic stuff and it turned me off to them. Also glad to hear the guitars again, just ordered Hidden Fields.

Polyus:

@Canterbury/Marcel - Stephen has actually been playing in the States as The Telescopes a fair amount the last few years, but with pick-up bands. Mostly just improv jam stuff, not all that good. Hopefully the new album is a regular functioning band. I did see one set here a few years back where he actually brought people over with him, and it was really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
Marcel M:

@Polyus: Cool, yes that would be really great if they did a tour over here with the lineup on this new record. I love Taste... its super aggressive and in the red... great record.

Its funny, on All Music the review says or used to say (they change them sometimes) that Taste sounded like teenagers making a record and their later records were better because they were more refined... its like, don't they get that all rock musicians are supposed to try to sound like teenagers?

I know, Marcel. It's like with the Replacements. "Oh their records are better because their songs are polished." But the fact their songs were great but unpolished is what I liked about them.
Avatar 10:32am
Cecile:

I think lots of times with gutsy rock 'n' roll the old critical tack used to be that you had to choose between polish and energy. I don't think that should be the case.

Much better than "We Built This City". And I must say I like most of the JS stuff that has Marty Balin singing.

So who has rights to put out Coil stuff these days?
Avatar 11:43am
Chris M.:

@Polyus: good question
Avatar 11:44am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Seems like there's been several dodgy versions of Backwards floating around, & this release is meant to clear that up (?) -- would love to see a major reissue campaign, of course. So much of that stuff is insanely expensive.
Avatar 11:46am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Was lucky enough to jump on a few latter-day coil products when they were new, that have since become more than stupidly expensive. The material is too good to be reduced to collector-scumbag diamond trophies...

any ideas to help with my asthma until I can pick up a rescue inhaler in about 6 hours? Internet said to drink hot coffee, and sit up straight. It's kind of helping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am

The story is that there are two people who hold masters and rights to the Coil collection, one of them is Jon Whitney at Brainwashed, and I forget who the other is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am

I could be wrong though.

Cecile yes that & nothing added to the coffee. i think very strong irish (or some other black) tea works better.
raw honey with lemon & LOTS of ginger.
"herba tussin" by
"traditional medicinals" is an excellent vehicle for ginger, honey & lemon.
do not eat,or eat very little. radish is good.
being outside is good- if outside where you are is reasonably pollution-free.
Good luck.
