This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Little Danny:

Evan: Definitely agree that Yusef was America's foremost proponent of exoticism and exotica in jazz. Also Lateef, along with Sun Ra, made explicit references to Les Baxter.

hyde: Thank you! Duly fixed.

@little danny no, thank *you*! that stuff looks amazing and these 45s that Flash is playing are killer too.
Avatar 8:07pm
Flash Strap:

Lateef really did! Some of the most explicit exotica quotes ever, really. I know Sun Ra admired Baxter, but I'm not sure I've ever noticed anything as explicit what Lateef did... but there's so much Sun Ra out there

This show loves you, Coe bro!

I'm not sure I can help with your query as I am total newbie to this stuff, but what do you mean, exactly? I think you can donate however much or little to any number of shows
Avatar 8:15pm

and oh yeah, those are just Dan's labels shopped on top of a pic of one of my hawaiian shirts I took to use for a Mike Cooper-themed show a ways back

@Flash Strap -- re: Sun Ra lecture -- glad you mentioned it...a friend emailed me about it last month, I totally forgot to give it a listen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
coelacanth:

i asked Joe & he said the system can only divide a $50. donation up 3 ways; but now i think i may be able to give more and i don't know if that limit is because it can only be divided in $15. increments or because -only into 3,regardless of the amount.
(i'd like to divide it by 4)

This is the one, I think you could argue, that's sung from the perspective of the Other lusting after the Western figure.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Little Danny:

Can't remember if you mentioned it, but "Black Sheep" is a Les Baxter composition. Its flipside "Robin's Mambo" appeared on Martinez's Dancing On The Sunset Strip LP (featuring pianist Eddie Cano & bongo king Jack Constanzo), so it seems likely they were involved. I don't know. Tony Martinez cut some other killer Latin jazz sides with an exotic feel, including "Pharoah's Curse," "Mambo Celeste" and "Ican."
Avatar 9:51pm
Flash Strap:

That's a crazy Baxter composition! I wish I had more of his one-off weird stuff like that

Once again, Flash Strap has taken us to uncharted magnificence! And we're in EXTRA time yet again. This is the only radio show that has no set ending time. It's just over when the slight jostle of boat against pier wakes us from our reverie. Captain Flash has brought us safely home again.
