This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Carmichael! Warm welcome Sadhu! I'll do my best to top Lynde, Hyde! Can it be done? is Dr. John a match for one of theguys from Kiss?

Dr John sure nailed the makeup a long time before kiss thou.

I saw Dr. John on SCTV, performing at Jonny La Rue's Polynesian joint. "But I ain't wearin' no grass skoit!"
Avatar 7:07pm

That musta been amazing Carm!
Avatar 7:07pm
Sadhu Sadhu:

What always struck me about Dr John, was how he pretty much is the only one who pulled that new orleans/voodoo thing to the max. One would expect there was atleast 10 or 20 other groups out there that would do something similar and pull it of pretty well, but i really havent found any good contestors.
Avatar 7:08pm

@Carmichael whoa, I don't remember that

Fun fact and side note: in L.A. Rebennack was also involved in one of the greatest pop records of them all, the Cake's "Baby That's Me." It's a girl group side that shares little with the New Orleans/voodoo thing, but it is nonetheless swirling and psychedelic in its own way. www.youtube.com...

from the foreword of Confederacy of Dunces: "There is a New Orleans city accent . . . associated with downtown New Orleans, particularly with the German and Irish Third Ward, that is hard to distinguish from the accent of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Astoria, Long Island, where the Al Smith inflection, extinct in Manhattan, has taken refuge. The reason, as you might expect, is that the same stocks that brought the accent to Manhattan imposed it on New Orleans."

What would you guys say is the meanes sounding Dr John gets? For me, there is something about his take on How Come My Dog Don't Bark (When You Come 'Round). That last verse is pretty intense... I guess its got to to with the contrast in the lyrics and the backing track or something...

Avatar 8:07pm
Sadhu Sadhu:

Its a solid album. I just wish that black keys dude left his finger marks all ower it. :)
Avatar 8:09pm
Flash Strap:

I agree, to a certain extent. I don't love Auerbach, and wish he toned down some stuff, but he still got together the most Night Trippin record since the original days. And Dr. John brings his most bloodsoaked street fightin' lyrics
Avatar 8:10pm
Flash Strap:

still, it's too in the pocket, groove oriented. Gris Gris sounds like it's gonna fall apart, and that's its strength. how could he not get that? But then again, what did Dr. John want out of this particular collab? I don't know
Avatar 8:13pm
Flash Strap:

It's better than the other Night Tripper resurrection, 1998's Anutha Zone, with Jay Spaceman and Portishead, etc.
Avatar 8:14pm
Sadhu Sadhu:

its a bit like Anutha Zone, where he was working with Jason Pierce and Supergrass, wich also is a pretty good album, but im guessing its to reach out to new crowds.
Avatar 8:14pm
Sadhu Sadhu:

Hahaha. I was just writing about that....
Avatar 8:16pm
Sadhu Sadhu:

But yea, Lock Down is absolutely a good records and i woudnt want to be without it. Its just those little Auerbach things that keeps me thinking about The Black Keys wich buggs me.
