Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Charlie:

Greetings to you, annie, Brian in UK, mauri, james, and Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Charlie:

fyi: Today will be less song-y and more sound-y than the previous few weeks :)
Avatar 12:04pm Peter Nelson:

I got nut in.
  12:04pm frenchee:

vuvuzela?
Avatar 12:05pm Michael:

Greetings to our host and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Brian in UK:

Is it true that the vuvuzela was/is an instrument of torture?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Charlie:

hi Peter - I got plenty o' nuttin' to share with you all
hi frenchee !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Charlie:

had to look up vuvuzela -- more like tibetan oboes ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Charlie:

those monks sure made a holy racket though, didn't they?
  12:09pm frenchee:

Yeah! I figured it was the wrong continent, but I just wanted to bring up Vuvuzelas. I miss em.
Avatar 12:09pm mauri:

vuvuzela jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Charlie:

basically blowing into a big tube through pursed lips
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Brian in UK:

Will somebody get the door.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Parq:

Choking flies would require reeeely small scarves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Charlie:

Yes, Isadora (hi Parq)
  12:13pm frenchee:

@Brian in UK: I don't know about instruments of torture, but a little Googling shows that THERE'S AN APP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

Sound-y is nice! Just caught up with Jeff and Jeff's fine show yesterday and I'm in a sound-y mood!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Brian in UK:

Apparition?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm listener james from westwood:

Ah, "Venus in Furs." Sound-y with a capital Y!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Brian in UK:

I am tempt to think that Jefferson Airplane listened to the Farinas in their early days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Charlie:

wouldn't be surprised, Brian. wouldn't be surprised if Lou did too.
Avatar 12:20pm Mayuko:

I'm at the office letting interns run around do work and myself is listening to your show. Hello Charlie and everyone!
  12:21pm frenchee:

Listening to Lou through headphones maybe for the first time ever and loving the chuckles and lingering Lou sighs. Shiver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Charlie:

Hi Mayuko! Yes, delegate to the interns so you can be busy doing nothing! btw, first heard that opening monks track on your show a few weeks ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Brian in UK:

Did Andre 3000 ever make that film about Jimi Hendrix.
Avatar 12:25pm Mayuko:

That Men of Dharamsala is great. I'm stealing your idea all the time so I'm glad I was able to give back once in a while, haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Brian in UK:

I was lucky enough to win this Angel Olsen in the Marathon. The odd thing is it always sounds better when I hear it on FMU than when I play it at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Charlie! After appropriately listening to last week's thematic program while working from a pastoral "home away from home," I'm back at my Lower Manhattan office, with its panoramic view of Ground Zero and Downtown Jersey City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Charlie:

it's creative personal re-purposing and appropriation, not stealing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm listener james from westwood:

That is genuinely difficult work, Charlie, both physically and emotionally. Good on ya for being there for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm listener james from westwood:

@Brian, likewise re: Olsen. Great win.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mayuko: I believe that if you're not stealing, you're not caring enough.
  12:37pm frenchee:

I like philosophical Charlie! Examining the depths.
Avatar 12:38pm famous original sugarwolf:

If sharing is caring, why can't stealing be too??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Charlie:

Hello Gaylord! Welcome back to ground zero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Brian in UK:

Charlie, I sympathise. It's a bugger getting older, my mum had dementia, when I visited her I never knew who I was going to be to her. First husband killed in the war, second husband, brother, rarely me though!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Brian in UK:

Tooooba.
Avatar 12:40pm ndbob:

afternoon Charlie and everyone!
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

@Gaylord Japanese masters never teach, and students need to observe them super carefully and steal their skills. I guess I'm living my tradition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Charlie:

Hello famous original sugarwolf! Is that like famous original Ray's pizza? Or are you like the Original Originals?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Charlie:

hi there, ndBob!
Avatar 12:44pm famous original sugarwolf:

I'm the original world famous sugarwolf!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Charlie:

well, you're legend in these parts!
Avatar 12:46pm famous original sugarwolf:

As long as I'm not merely a legend in my own mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Charlie:

Yes, Brian, it's difficult. My dad knows who I am, but has a whole catalog of stories from our past that are fabrications. For instance, I recently learned that we went to the (original) Woodstock festival together!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Gaylord Fields:

@Charlie: Thanks for sharing two stories with us — the one with your words, and the one with your musical selections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Charlie:

Mayuko -- I had to follow around WFMU DJs for ten years before I could do a show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Brian in UK:

A backdated wishlist perhaps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mayuko: I agree with you completely. I'm a big believer in apprenticeships for creative work. There are some things that can't be taught as a lesson, and some that can but shouldn't. Otherwise, you'll just become a copy of the master rather than taking some of the master's ways and applying them to your own art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm listener james from westwood:

Hey, Charlie, did you just top 100%, or were you always there? Congrats either way!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Gaylord Fields:

@famous original sugarwolf: Stealing is feeling!
Avatar 12:54pm Mayuko:

It is interesting that those esoteric buddhist stuff like Tibetans' feels to me way more intense than other types of buddhist chants and stuff. They seem to have many ideas and trainings to go back and forth between life and death, maybe it's like an extension of what you experienced. I liked how you made segue from such intense place to the level of our reality musically. They're def contiguous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Brian in UK:

Well spotted james.
  12:54pm frenchee:

Is it me or is everybody exceptionally profound and bright today? Heady company and excellent music to go with it. YAY for Charlie, making his goal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Stanley:

Hi Charlie, esteemed listeners.
Avatar 12:56pm famous original sugarwolf:

@gaylord: my favorite thing to steal is hearts
Avatar 12:56pm Mayuko:

hooray! congrats on reaching goal!!!
Avatar 12:58pm famous original sugarwolf:

gooooooooooooooooal!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Charlie:

thanks to Brian in UK, and Robert in Amsterdam for pushing me over the goal! yay!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Charlie your show is not helping, I have no interns to make my out turns into full terms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Brian in UK:

STANLEY, fireworks have started already. Did you see the email I sent the other day?
Avatar 1:01pm Mayuko:

@Gaylord it can be annoying sometimes though. especially when you have an incompetent boss who uses that logic and never teach you anything efficiently. Happens a lot in Japan, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Charlie:

Hi Stanley ~
@Brian -- maybe you can borrow some of Mayuko's interns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Brian in UK:

@Mayuko. It is easy being a manager/boss Easier being a bad one. The skill is being a good one and not letting it show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm listener james from westwood:

Fireworks aside from those launched by professionals are verboten in New Jersey, on the Fifth of November and the Fourth of July and every other damn day. NYC, too, after Ghouliani. Of course, right over the NJ–Pennsylvania border, you're confronted with a huge fireworks warehouse, of the type Milhouse despaired of Itchy & Scratchy ever reaching. They're just begging New Jerseyans to hop across the line, drop a paycheck on some rockets, and risk getting pulled on the return trip by some west Jersey Roscoe P. Coltrane–type.
Avatar 1:07pm Mayuko:

@Brian Very true. in fact I'm being a bad manager busy doing nothing right now. This is easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

That was a bewitching Syd cover.
Hey Charlie and listeners...
Avatar 1:07pm Sarah N:

A change is as good as arrest. If you want me I'll be at the bars.

Hello fellow inmates...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Stanley:

Hi Brian. Sure did, when I got back from France Tuesday. My timing is indeed crap but don't let that stop you getting down to Brighton for the DOUBLE BILL. I can't imagine it'll sell out. I remember it was a low turnout when Ken and Andy were hassling those in the queue live on Seven Second Delay and that was in New Jersey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coelacanth:

hi Charlie and idol humans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Brian in UK:

@coelacanth You were right first time. I am a god in this house!!!!
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Brian in UK:

....I mean dog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm coelacanth:

haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Brian in UK:

Great show Charlie; time for a beer and a bath. Who says men cannot multitask.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Stanley:

Cheers Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Charlie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Charlie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm doctorjazz:

This is cool, nice covers, This Betty Lavette is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm the Canterbury wood-elf:

Haven't heard this SY for 20+ years. Wow, sounds so fresh and familiar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm northguineahills:

I think the only tracks on Goo I've heard on WFMU is Kool Thing and My Friend Goo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Charlie:

NGH -- I love the whole Goo album. Have played many tracks from it over the years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm northguineahills:

I still have my original cassette of Goo, and still play it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm ìkƎ:

Hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Brian in UK:

I was dead chuffed when I discovered that I had one of the tracks on Endtroducing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Charlie:

hello, ikE, ik3, ìkƎ, i like, how do you make that backwards E?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Ĩkє:

The lazy way: By copying and pasting it from somewhere else on the Intertubes!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Charlie:

Charlie the crazy Ingerlish, there was a group that went out and played Endtroducing LIVE and called it INTRODUCING. A break off from that was Laroca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm northguineahills:

Beautiful show for a beautiful afternoon. Thanks Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Charlie:
