technically, the group name is "Jeff Lynne's ELO"
Avatar 3:50pm

The improvements to the engineering seem pretty obvious on that ELO remake. I wonder if it will be available on vinyl for a real head-to-head comparison

combo: I've updated accordingly. See the biopic. It's terrif.

WFMU DJs would have fallen within the scope of Pol Pot's aims...
  4:15pm
Listener Robert:

Meanwhile, GGG, Art Bell quit his radio show this mo. because of death threats backed up by shots fired, vandalism, & intrusion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Irwin:

Art Bell is STILL broadcasting? Next you'll tell me that Colbert still has a TV show.
  4:25pm
Listener Robert:

Bell started a show July 25 called "Midnight in the Desert" to compete w his old show. The audience was mostly via stream, but he was picking up b'cast affiliates as months went along. Then in Sept., he had a cable cut, and then things got more serious: pvtimes.com...
  4:29pm
Listener Robert:

I'm guessing it had nothing to do w his content, but rather w his prominent antenna array, visible for miles, and his assailant a nut like the one who beat up Dan Rather turned out to be. The chief alternative hypotheses -- gangsterism by competitors, someone offended by his content, or that he fabricated the whole thing -- are not as credible to me.
  4:30pm
berbo:

Did Reich convince anyone to eat at McDonalds? I don't think so.
  4:32pm
Listener Robert:

Regardless of whether orgone was about the ravings of a nut or serious science (I think it was the former), Reich's persecution by FDA and FTC were over the top & horrible. Was it necessary to destroy his books?
  4:37pm
GGG:

If they were books being distributed inter-state and making misleading medical claims, they have the right (with a judge's approval) to do so. Don't know if it was necessary, but it does happen with other quack-like content.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
dale:

art bell was airing over shortwave station wbcq briefly. it was always on too late for my tired bones.
  4:48pm
Listener Robert:

He was on a couple of sw stns., several mostly small FM & AM medium wave stns., but then picked up some major ones on the west coast & was about to announce their deal w WABC.

Yes, GGG, I know the legal theory by which literature becomes part of a medical device, but when it's unaccompanied by the sale of a device and isn't even being sold??!
  4:52pm
Listener Robert:

Anyway, Bell's producer, Heather Wde, who'd been recruited initially from a fan Web board (handle [Redacted]) -- reminding me of developments here -- took over his on-mic role, but as when Jason Jarvis took over from his mother Judy's network talk show, I don't think the magic rubs off sufficiently.

...Joe expounding on popular &/or modern social figures this way reinforces my notion that he & Hearty White are opposite sides of the same coin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Mike East:

really dug that Joe Frank episode, Irwin. Nice selection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Irwin:

Would love to know what the bridge music was early in that Joe show. Some weird jazz abruptly cut off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Mike East:

...and thank you for not playing Barry Manilow following it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Irwin:

Not that it occurred to me, but I like Manilow. Fine pop craftsman. "Mandy" is such a bleak, dark song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
Irwin:

Speaking of bleak, dark songs, this Procol song is downright depressing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
Mike East:

I grew up with my parents and sisters listening to Manilow, but not his better known stuff. I got burnt out on it. I can still appreciate some of his hits well enough, but overall, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm

you could play 'brandy' by scott english and no one would throw rocks at you.

...I had Procul's 'Salty Dog' 45 as a callow lad - it was on both sides I think...I kept playing it I think because I wondered if there was something other than feeling like being shipwrecked I was maybe missing...

i don't know that one. is it like the kids of widney high?

I thought I was above Manilow until I saw him in concert a few years ago and finally understood what a fine entertainer he is. Totally gives his heart to his audience, and in his 70s, what energy the man has! Excellent piano chops and he can still hit the notes. The man feels a lot of joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
Irwin:

Manilow's one of those artists who's both over- and underrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm

The worst crime in a music career is to stop playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
Irwin:

I can think of a few examples where continuing constitutes the greater crime.
  5:35pm
Listener Robert:

They always say not to quit, you'll regret it later. I quit piano lessons at about age 12, never regretted it. But of course I never had a music career & had the good sense to leave it to those whose aptitude was better.
  5:35pm
Listener Robert:

Exactly so, Irwin!

I was thinking in terms of that Jefferson Airplane quote, "Life is change. How it differs from the rocks...". Great music tonight! Thanks!

This is clearly Irwin's way of complaining about the DJ who didn't file the Manilow albums correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Irwin:

Didn't have to complain. Took matters into my own hands and gave that DJ a wedgie to remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
