Hi Dave. A great show, as always. This version of "The Magnificent 7" is delightful. If I wasn't getting ready for bed, I'd dance around the house to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm

Dave, have you heard the Cafe Accordion Orchestra? They have a CD, Cinema, that is all stuff like this.
Avatar 10:42pm
HollyT:

Huh. I don't think I knew the was originally the theme from the Magnificent Seven! In the 70s, I'm pretty sure the main riff was used as the opener for the Sunday Night Movie, or something along those lines? Anyone here remember?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Andrew Waterloo:

mmm.. Matt Brubeck plays for Oranj Symphonette?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

@Holly - It was also the Marlboro cigarette theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

For those of us who are old enough to remember ciggy ads on TV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

interesting that would be the new york way...it's closer to "proper english" than "Huge",w/a hard h.
  10:46pm

Hey!

So is there a cap as to how many songs on a CD? Seems the players only go to 100.
  10:46pm

I mean 99
Avatar 10:48pm
Dave Mandl:

Oh my, too many comments to catch up on. Thanks.
Avatar 10:48pm
HollyT:

I was born in 68, so I'm thinking this must've been around the mid-to-late 70s. Were they still running ciggy ads on TV then?
Avatar 10:48pm
Dave Mandl:

Yes, it was the Marlboro commercial.
Avatar 10:48pm
Dave Mandl:

Maybe early '70s? I think they killed cigarette ads in '71.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
pacific standard simon:

No, IIRC, the ad ban was early '71.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Rw, I've had CDs that went to track 104. There was different editions to the Redbook standard and your CD may have or may not have played depending on the type of enhanced CD, if the tracks started at 1 or not, or if the tracks went beyond 99.
Avatar 10:49pm
HollyT:

Weird! They must've adopted the theme for something else as well, then. Or I watched The Magnificent 7 many times without realizing it. :)
Avatar 10:51pm
Dave Mandl:

Belated welcome: Andrew, pss, rw, Wendy, Eric, I X.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

@HollyT - It's quite possible that The Magnificent Seven theme wormed its way into your ear via Muzak, too.
  10:54pm
rw:

thx AW! reminds me of the Y2K fiasco.
Avatar 10:55pm
HollyT:

Pss: extremely likely :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
coelacanth:

rw, the redbook standard aside; i'm pretty sure you can put hundreds of tracks on a cd- but probably no players will count them all. ...they'll play, but the readout will turn blank after a certain number. (usually 20 for a cd"changer")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
coelacanth:

...and you can definitely put 79 minutes and 57 seconds on a cd - if the burner/program will do it.

I certainly hope this fellow knows this Mary Long pretty well, because if he doesn't, asking her, "How did you lose your virginity?" is pretty rude, isn't it? I mean, gosh, that's a very forward question.

Avatar 11:28pm
Dave Mandl:

Mary Long = Mary Whitehouse, famous anti-smut campaigner in the UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
joeray:

Therese started her show last week with a Bowie birthday tribute and by 2:00am when the news of his death was announced, she presented an impromptu Bowie memorial set for the last hour of her show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Ike:

OH! That casts the whole thing in an entirely different light. We classic Doctor Who fans versed in the history of British TV in the 70s know Mary Whitehouse well. She effectively forced out of the best producers of Doctor Who circa 1978, turning the show from largely gothic horror into largely sophomoric comedy-tinged goofiness for a time.
  Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Lonely Planet Boy:

Tipper Gore would be the 80s version. When anti-smut gave up and became parental concern trolling.
