good morning!

Morning, all.

Morning sir.

this one too!

Oh man, I'm missing all the good stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28am
pacific standard simon:

Wait, where's the love for Signe?
  3:29am
Nick:

Nice to hear the Paul Kantner tribute. Thanks Jeff. Yeah dittoing PSS - Are you aware Signe Toly Anderson passed away too? Oddly, the same day as Kantner...same ages too.
Avatar 3:32am
Jeff Conklin:

Yes, I read about Anderson just prior to getting on air. Strange coincidence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33am
pacific standard simon:

It's like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both dying on July 4th, 1826. Which they did.
Avatar 3:36am
Sr.Blanco:

Another significant coincidence: Willian Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes died on April 23rd, 1616.
Avatar 3:40am
Jeff Conklin:

I wasn't on the air when all of those dudes died :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41am
pacific standard simon:

Here's a good one: "[Aldous] Huxley died at 5:20pm, London time, on 22 November 1963. About ten minutes later, CS Lewis died. Just under an hour after that, of course, JFK was shot and killed in Dallas. There may never have been a deadlier 70 minutes for celebrity[.]"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43am
pacific standard simon:

Also: "Trio of funnymen Milton Berle, Dudley Moore & Billy Wilder all died on 27 March, 2002."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am
pacific standard simon:

That last one could also be labelled 'trio of talented but obnoxious jerks.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50am
pacific standard simon:

This is a great track. Don't know why it sounds strange, yet familiar.
  3:54am
Josh:

Is anyone else having an issue with the web stream? It's a total mess for me, cutting in and out...
Avatar 3:56am
Jeff Conklin:

That stinks, Josh. Restart maybe?
  3:57am
Nick:

@Josh - I'm hearing it fine using itunes 128k mp3. Sorry you're having problems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58am
pacific standard simon:

Not I, said the little red hen. Might be your internet provider.
  3:58am
Josh:

It was my computer! Absolutely fine after a reboot. What a peculiar manifestation of a bug. Thanks for the replies though, kind people. Happily back in the bosom of the avant ghetto...

Environments record music bed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06am
pacific standard simon:

Back in the day, you could get a free copy of Blows Against the Empire by subscribing to Rolling Stone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06am
coelacanth:

that's correct,i'm pretty sure. "sign"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07am
pacific standard simon:

I pronounce Signe "See-nay", but I could be very wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am
coelacanth:

i may be wrong instead, but i'm going by a friend who has far more authority than myself, and most people, in the field of languages.
  4:12am
Nick:

She did some music after moving to Portland, but yeah not much. Marty Balin said in a statement today "I imagine that she and Paul woke up in heaven and said, ‘Hey what are you doing here? Let’s start a band.'" Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am
pacific standard simon:

Most of my favorite JA tracks feature Marty or Grace or Jorma. Paul was the one I had trouble with picking out of the mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16am
pacific standard simon:

I used to see Paul, though, hanging out at Mabuhay Gardens (North Beach, San Francisco). He was a fan of teh new wave.
Avatar 4:19am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@pss: Nov. '63 is my birth month (I was b. the 3rd) - but I didn't know they all died on the 22nd w/in 70 minutes! Also that day: 'With the Beatles' was released, & after JFK coverage on the BBC, the 1st episode of 'Dr. Who', called 'An Unearthly Child'.
Avatar 4:20am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Saturday the 30th was just Marty Balin's B-Day.
  4:23am
Nick:

Wow, that's wild. One of my favorite Airplane songs is "Today", co-written by Kanter and Balin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am
pacific standard simon:

"Today" also features Jerry Garcia on guitar.
  4:32am
Nick:

Did Garcia play a lot with them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37am
pacific standard simon:

There were a lot of Airplane/Dead jam bands, but Garcia specifically went into the recording studio with the Airplane during the recording of Surrealistic Pillow. Garcia was especially prolific in his sharing of his exploration of the pedal steel guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am
pacific standard simon:

As a studio musician, I should have said.
Avatar 4:39am
Jeff Conklin:

Legend has it Garcia produced SP but because of record company mumbo jumbo had to be given only a "spiritual adviser" credit.
  4:40am
Nick:

Cool, thanks for the info
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46am
pacific standard simon:

My favorite JA tracks are "It's No Secret" and "She Has Funny Cars", so that should tell you everything you need to know about my prejudices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Last night I prepared a Signe/Paul tribute for my monthly podcast. I also chose "Crown of Creation", plus "DCBA-25", "Eskimo Blue Day" (live at Woodstock) and a couple off the first album with Signe ("High Flying Bird" and "Run Around"). A shame it took two deaths to remind me how much I love the Airplane.

And yeah, there are some great jams recorded with Garcia at the house in Fulton Street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57am
pacific standard simon:

Good for you and your listeners, wood elf! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00am
pacific standard simon:

The thing is, I can't find that monthly podcast online. Help me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@pss It's canterburywithoutborders.blogspot.com. The next episode won't go out until later in the month. Lots of archives to explore tho'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05am

I love The Youngbloods and I cannot lie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08am
pacific standard simon:

Thank you, elf. You got the beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17am
pacific standard simon:

Dino Valenti always puts a bad taste in my mouth, in spite of the fact that he wrote one of the best hippie songs ever. He never recorded the best version of any song, including the ones he wrote himself.
Avatar 5:18am
Jeff Conklin:

His Me and My Uncle is the best in my opinion...And 'Shame on You Babe' is all-time killer that was left off the album for some insane reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am
pacific standard simon:

I'll take The Dead for "Me And My Uncle". Don't know the other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31am
Guido from Cologne:

Good morning, late but enjoying.
Avatar 5:31am
Jeff Conklin:

Weir makes it cheesy. Dino's is actually a little scary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38am
pacific standard simon:

The best story about "Me And My Uncle" is that John Phillips didn't even remember writing it, he was so drunk. After Judy Collins recorded it and started sending Phillips royalties, they had to sort it out.

As for Weir's interpretation, we will have to agree to disagree. I don't think that there is a serious interpretation of that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am
joeray:

Another great show, thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43am
pacific standard simon:

That actually sounded a lot like Jerry Garcia on pedal steel.
  5:45am
greysquad:

hmmm, missed the Kantner/Jefferson air/starship tribute in the beginning, looking forward to the archived version... great show, nonetheless!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46am

@Canterbury wood-elf: very cool playlists, I will be listening to your podcast archives this week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@joeray Glad to hear it (but always a shame to take people's ears away from WFMU). There's an earlier archived series which is even more Canterbury Scene oriented: canterburysoundwaves.blogspot.com

I was a little brother - one of the typical ways one becomes a Music Nerd, I think
- so, Jefferson Airplane was some of the earliest music I was exposed to in my whole life. Even the album covers are especially evocative to me. Ah me - Mortality...

Mr. elf: Do you know if I Copy & Paste that RSS into iTunes I may subscribe to you there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Jeff Dick Gaughan's name is pronounced "Gochan" with a guttural "ch" (more like a "k"). Great show by the way, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@RRN63. I still haven't figured out the whole RSS thing. I suspect my podcasts aren't listed on iTunes, but perhaps I'm wrong (I don't use it). I know I have listeners who subscribe via RSS clients though. Let me know how you get on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56am

@Canterbury wood-elf: Listening to your archives won't cut into my favorite WFMU shows. I especially love the Canterbury artists, so that's even better news! Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58am

Thanks Jeff
