i will plough through the bags of Chinese New Year candy my Cantonese translator friend has just left on the desk, and prepare my late evening black tea...
Avatar 6:23am
annie:

i hear the year of the fire monkey is very dynamic.. .. and that there are 7(?) of each of the chinese symbols.. so.. 7 different years for monkey, each with a different name and influence... so that the years don't stop at 12 and go back through, they actually go a full cycle of 84 years? did i do that math right?
Avatar 6:26am
ausmanx:

i'm assuming Fire Monkey refers to The Donald. the multiplication is good, Annie, though i'm puzzled that this is the first year we ignorant Westerners have paid much attention to the seven variants, we usually just note the twelve majors. another sign of our increasing dependence on the Chinese...

annie:

yes, i was thinking the same thing.. i have it on my list to keep better track.. perhaps that's why one year of the ram is not the previous year of the ram.it couln't be so set and fast. always some small vatiable.
maybe that's what i'll do while i wait for the bacon to cook

what do we think about the idea of writing a PhD on Saturday Night Fever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
sashajones:

i'd take a chance on it
Avatar 6:47am
annie:

wow, aus, full of modern icons connected to older, more-traditional motifs.. cool.. i watched a movie last night "Cheyenne Summer" that held themes similar with more modern movies, most of which heavily borrowed for "Dances with Wolves".. and the road goes ever on.
Avatar 6:52am
ausmanx:

i'm just looking the thesis over... completely fascinating, suggesting it's the crucial turning point in the relation between music and cinema (and it was never intended to be of any significance at all... Stigwood was obsessed with Grease and Sgt Pepper instead).
Avatar 6:52am
annie:

this is the concept i was thinking of for the various symbols.

That sounds amazing, who wrote it?
Avatar 6:53am
annie:

is this your latest edit? i'd love to read it, i'm fascinated with folklore
Avatar 6:55am
annie:

in my rss news feed i got a great article describing older versions of some of our more "modern" folk stories. i posted it on my FB wall so i could find it.. brb
Avatar 6:57am
ausmanx:

our best music critic here, Clinton Walker (of "Buried Country" fame). i'm not doing an edit, just looking it over for him. but we are hoping to render it publishable in a year or two (if he finishes it!)... he has such a great archive of unpublished writing, i can almost believe there are unplumbed depths to Australian music...

annie:

oh the knowledge that slips by us!! it's in our cells yet we seem to let them slip by in favor of our modern concerns. here is that link to the Atlantic article: www.theatlantic.com...

(sasha, i tagged you)

of course, if we applied that principle to so-called "religious" texts, we'd see they're all much the same and some sanity might prevail...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13am
sashajones:

thanks annie! look forward to reading later this morning
Avatar 7:16am
annie:

exactly, aus. yeah, sasha, my first real obsession was fairy tales and folklore.. and, to this day, i notice a subtle underlying thread running through all our discourses

Wild Neil:

@Ausmanx-hi there! Good morning everybody! Ausmanx, can you cite a couple examples of movies that could not have existed without the influence of Saturday Night Live to break the ice so to speak, or does it not work that way?
Avatar 8:25am
Wild Neil:

Saturday Night FEver I mean...!
Avatar 8:27am
ausmanx:

neil, i haven't read far into the thesis yet, but i think his point was that it was the first film to use the soundtrack that way (apparently stigwood actually took songs from the next Bee Gees album and put them in the film instead) as an integral part of marketing the film, a process which then became commonplace (of course the merger of film companies with music companies in the 70s was part of this, but i'm assuming you could even argue SNF accelerated that process too)
Avatar 8:30am
Wild Neil:

@Ausmanx-thank you for that concise explanation. Got it!

There's a two-hour delay for the schools here today. I get to relax a bit and listen to the show, so that works out well.
