Missed the J Dilla earlier. There is an interview on the Amoeba Records site with Flea and Amy-Jo Albany in which Flea chokes up as he describes how much he loves J Dilla's records. Kinda sweet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@glenn - Reports vary.
  6:03pm
Dean:

Elvis? Never sure...

It's weird, but Hicks, J Dilla, and even Bowie were never on my playlists, yet their departures are palpable. That says something about my taste, of course, but I feel like it also says something about our musical culture, its richness and variety and wealth of very special talent.
  6:03pm
Are Bee:

I don't comment much but I want to say that Gaylord always delivers an A++ show and I listen because I know he will never just phone it in. Where else do you get Gabor Szabo and Elvis Presley on the same show? Keep up the amazing work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Are Bee: Your kind words mean a lot to me. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm
Adrian in London:

That Elvis track was lovely. Never heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Adrian in London: It was first released on his Pot Luck LP in 1962, amid all his soundtrack dreck, but not of it. And yes, it is a favorite Elvis track.
Avatar 6:10pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I would always have said I was a Bowie fan, but *still* surprised how impactful (if you'll forgive the neologism) his departure has been - both generally & personally.
...& Jefferson Airplane was some of the earliest stuff I was ever exposed to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Adrian in London:

@Gaylord Of course, I'd never heard his track Black Star until a couple of weeks ago, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Gaylord Fields:

For those of us of a certain age (or who like music from a certain era), the rate of deaths of artists who mean a lot to us will seem almost incessant.
  6:12pm
Dean:

Yup, demographics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Adrian in London: There's so much dross to sift through with EP, so there's no shame in that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
Adrian in London:

Your show's the first thing that's managed to dislodge Sylvan's We Don't Belong from my brain since Sheila played it on Friday. What a track! That and Clothilde's Saperlipopette have been my songs of choice for the weekend.
  6:15pm

Ugh work... Finally sneaking in dinner....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Don't wolf it down in a hurry. Take human bites!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm

@Adrian in London: The song in my head all weekend had been "Bushes of Love," from Bad Lip Reading's Star Wars spoof video.

wfmu show idea: the roundup. two hours on sunday night, playing the music of artists who have died that week.
Avatar 6:19pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bowie was a little younger than the British Invasion proper - a real bridge between them & Punk - w/ Glam & the ArtRock underground - yet hugely Popular. Ushered in a more Visual age. It's no wonder it's a big deal, really, but still surprised - something stealthy about he mattered...
  6:20pm
sugarwolf:

I hope Big Freedia is Beyoncé's special guest at the half time show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm

And let's not forget Bowie's wallpaper he did for Laura Ashley…

Bob in Oakland:

I just picked up Nino & April's All Strung Out LP yesterday at Amoeba in SF. The first three cuts on side one (You'll Be Needing Me Baby, Help You To See, and the title track) pack perhaps the most sublime 1-2-3 punch of the modern era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Bob in Oakland: I agree that it's a really good record! I'm glad you found it.
Avatar 6:32pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Dean: Clearly a worthy read, Cheers!

So - one metaphor is Gaylord as Film Director as DJ.
...The other 'image' evoked for me on FMU Sunday eves (over different Schedules) has been a neighborhood of cafes or clubs - stylin' hangouts, w/ each Program a different address...

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: @Ian: Peter Weiss said it first, in Marat/Sade.
  6:56pm
Ian:

Sorry Rabbit. We posted at the same time.
Avatar 6:56pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

www.songfacts.com... :
The lyrics, "We are normal and we want our freedom" echo a line from a (then) new Peter Brook production of the play by Peter Weiss, The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade (normally shortened to Marat/Sade). In the play the line is shouted by the inmates at the lunatic asylum. The band saw the play at their art college and later used the line in this song. (thanks, Nancy - Isle Of Wight, United Kingdom)
