I read a Lush interview once where they said they had a terrible time getting producers to listen to them cuz they were lumped in with all of the other shoegaze bands, and it wasn't until their last album that they actually got the sound they wanted.

Well as I mentioned above, Lush were annoyed that they got lumped in with shoegaze bands and didn't get the sound they wanted on their records until the very last one. So I do know a little about the subject

  4:09pm
JakeGould:

@Cliff: “Lush” and “Ride” complained about the shoegazey sound of their first releases, released other stuff nobody cared about and then—at least in the case of “Ride”—decided to embrace their shoegazey sound again during reunion tours.

@daveB things are quit expectancy kat down in Belize at the moment.
Guess it depends on where you're going away from
  4:10pm

So let's see, by JakeGould's standards it'd be MBV, Slowdive, Ride....and that's it? Anybody else you want to include?
  4:10pm

Oh, not even Ride, I see, heh
  4:10pm
JakeGould:

@Cliff: *sips tea*
  4:11pm
Lyle:

Funny that you mention shoegaze. As some of you know, I was with the Kenton band for a time in the 50's. Now, Stan Kenton was known for being quite animated onstage. Too animated, some said, and some blamed Krupa for this, though Kenton was no hop-head. Oddly, circa '57, Kenton internalized, withdrew and became very stoic on the bandstand. No more choreographed leaps or sudden lunges towards the front row. (Oh, the crowds loved those!) - Instead, he either stared straight ahead or (you guessed it!) he stared at his shoes. I think it was the Davenport Advocate-Leader that first stated "Shoe-gazer Kenton Disappoints Crowd with Low-Key Performance." Was he the first? I'm not sure. But he certainly was a trendsetter, there's no doubt about that. We had a lot of fun back then.

JakeGould, so just MBV and Slowdive, that's it? I thought you said there were a few others you'd include

CLASSIC
  4:22pm
Lyle:

The Baron Von Ohlen! Dear, Lord. His real name was Barry Olson. There's no doubt about it. Barry was a darn fine drummer, though, like Krupa he liked the wacky-tobacky. He was the first to use aluminum sticks. His first pair were actually made of iron, and after playing those for a year or two, he built-up these huge Popeye forearms! We laughed about that. The Baron is a fine record. I actually play on it. (you guessed ... 4th bone). That's me on side two doing a lot of what bone players call "blatting." That low-end, flatulent sound. It was a whole new thing back then. It would be years before Phil Bodner or James Pankow would get into blatting the way I did. Not to blow my own horn! Those were great sessions. Last I heard, Barry was the Assistant Manager of a Hinky Dinky in Crete, Nebraska.

Bennies? Oh. yes. I remember those. We took them by the fistful in the Frank Chacksfield band. You had to! The music was so dull. This was at the dawn of the easy listening music era, and artists like Montovani, Peter Nero, Frank Purcell and their ilk were cleaning up. Frank desperately wanted in on the action. In the course of one rehearsal, all of the horns were muted, the drums were eliminated altogether, and Frank instructed us all to switch from our usual cardinal red tuxedos to new beige jumpsuits, which we hated (they itched!) I lasted about two months with Chacksfield. It was fun though, in its way.

yeh Cliff it wasn't overtly hostile when i got there but there was a certain tension. ...then dr."certified audiophile" (HAHAHAHAHA!!!) came along to piss me off with his delusions about being more qualified than 1/2 the rest of us!
  4:53pm
Cliff:

Never heard of Frank Chacksfield, but he has a wiki page where he's described as a "composer and conductor of popular light orchestral easy listening music". Story checks out again.

Cliff:

Oh yes, audiophile guy was recommending me some brand that starts out at $500 for a low end TT, I'd already said my budget was around $200. Just about to click buy on an Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB for $219.

Benzedrine & itchy jumpsuits.

Wait, bennies are amphetamines, not benzos? Yeah, that would make a lot more sense if you're playing easy-listening music.

Lyle, got any stories about the recording of Doug Sahm's "It's Gonna Be Easy"? Apparently Chris M had found a rare version where they were all on acid and played the song 12 times in a row without realizing it.

OK, so I've been enjoying your show (as I enjoy all your fill-ins), but I haven't had a chance to comment until now. First of all, that cover of "Sunshine of Your Love" was the greatest thing I've ever heard in my life! That bass sound was amazing. Point two: I'm pretty sure I used to work with the drummer of the Gories. I think. And finally, Protomartyr is from my old stomping grounds, Ann Arbor, and I'm so happy they're getting so much FMU love. I thought "The Agent Intellect" was one of the best albums of the year, IMHO. And that is all my commenting and I shall now return to delighted listening. Say hello to your most wonderful and excellent and friendly dog for me!

Which just about summed up what was going on the first half of that show
  5:18pm
Lyle:

Cliff, I hope I have not given you or anyone the impression that I approve of recreational drug ingestion. This being said, as far as LDS is concerned, I do recall the time when the talented Toni Scotti sang "1-2-3" for a group of Marines in Iwakuni on a little package tour we were on. Tony always took pride in his handsome appearance, however, under the influence of the LDS, he forgot one very important thing ... his pants! Imagine the look on those Marines faces when Toni ran onstage fully unaware that he was only half-clad, singing ... "one, two, three, that's how elementary ... it's gonna be." The whole place erupted into one collective guffaw! Even Tony laughed when he realized what he'd done, and like a trooper, he finished the show, despite the cold breeze blowing in off the Seto Inland Sea.

And I neither condone nor condemn recreational drug use, or the joining of religious groups with "interesting" beliefs. Having done/still doing plenty of both it would be hypocritical of me to do so.

Good ol' Dad, he sure was an expert at precisely explaining how he wanted things done, just like my stepdad Pat (also R.I.P.) He also showed me how to properly screw apart any piece of machinery and put it back together without breaking it or losing any screws in the process. He was a helicopter mechanic in the Marine Corps, they trained him well.
  5:32pm
Cliff:

Served in Vietnam '66-'69, and wasn't treated well at all when he got back, had people spit at him and scream "BABYKILLER!!!" right in his face, he was always bitter about that but I don't blame him for it.
  5:36pm
Cliff:

Forgot to mention, his showing me how to properly take stuff apart and put it back together when I was a kid was what led to my current hobby of building custom computers.
  5:37pm
Lyle:

Please thank him for his service, Cliff. Someday I'll tell you about the time I was with Charro's band and we did a swing through Laos in the '80's. Played Euphonium on that tour! Time for a nap. Bless you kids.
