Excellent to check in to the show again. I was feeling rather obscure-prog-ish this evening.

Have you hear The Winstons yet, Tony? More Italian Canterbury-heads, with a rather nice album here: thewinstons.bandcamp.com...

And my VdGG vote goes to "Man Erg"....

A friend of mine laments the passing of Piotr Grudzinski, guitarist for Polish prog outfit Riverside, of whom I'd never heard. He writes, "After years of slogging through the general mediocrity of modern neo-prog, I finally find a band -- Riverside -- who just totally hooks me all the way in with their last 2 albums, and their guitarist dies...and he was only 40 years old!"
Avatar 12:50pm

@ Dean - funny I read similar sentiments from friends - I am unaware of Riverside. Will need to explore.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Neo-prog is 99% dross in my experience and I can't figure out why. The palette of technological possibilities has expanded a thousandfold, access of countless genres of music from diverse times and places is now available to everyone for free. You can record studio quality stuff in your basement. And yet these lesser/forgotten prog bands from the early 70's we're hearing now make most of the current bands sound pathetically unadventurous and narrow in scope.
Avatar 12:56pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Michael: Glad to hear it! (and... Greets!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Well that question's evidently stumped everyone : )
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Canterbury wood-elf: One partial explanation might be that neo-prog bands (almost by definition) are trying to recreate or recapture something -- which is mostly a losing game, I think. Most likely more adventurously minded musicians with a lot of personality and a lot to say wouldn't be drawn to the imitation game. Of course, sometimes it works, even when something is clearly derivative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

Yeah. In the last 15 minutes I've decided the whole concept of "prog" is redundant. Neo-prog is like "retro-futurism" in a way. The really "progressive" rock music has bled into a whole sheaf of genres and subgenres (post-rock, math-rock, plus all kinds of wonderfully unclassificable stuff you hear on FMU every day but would never think "prog"...Stan's show is full of such stuff)
  1:15pm
βrian:

The first time I heard of prog, I assumed it was short for proglodyte
Avatar 1:16pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, the first time I heard about KBD punk bands, I assumed it meant punk bands with a keyboard player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

I found a wonderful National Health bootleg the other day - from '76 with Bruford still drumming, Alan Gowen still there on second keyboards, Mont Campbell on bass, Hillage guesting on guitar. The only downside is that Amanda Parsons was out with the 'flu. Tenemos Roads here: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 1:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Nice, will have to seek that out. Thanks, Elf!
  1:21pm
Dean:

Distracted by a meeting, hence my unusual silence. Math rock is what precisely comes to mind as "real" neo-prog. Just this morning I was thinking of Fucking Champs. My kid watches a cartoon, Johnny Test, in which the music is this hyperactive movie soundtrack stuff, but this morning I heard a riff that made me wonder whether the Champs had found a gig doing this stuff. Then there's the nostalgia circuit, the Musical Boxes, the Houses of Floyd (one of whose singers I know), the Steve Hackett surveys of Genesis. I've never found the energy to attend to the prog revival bands, the Spock's Beards and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm

Dean:

A few weeks ago I mentioned to Tony that the neighborhood church my spouse and son attend features musicians at Mass who definitely have a prog edge, albeit sans electronic instruments. I've attended only a couple times, but their performances remind me of "Trespass"-era Genesis.

the Canterbury wood-elf:

Ha! I was in Canterbury Cathedral last week in an "interesting" state of mind, listening to the Evensong service (the acoustics are utterly celestial, and the organ in there is like some kind of ultimate sound system...the bass, man...) The organ player was tearing it up at the end of Wood's "O Thou The Central Orb" (great hymn title!) and it suddenly went kinda prog. A touch of Dave Sinclair from Caravan.

they were a fantastic live band.
  1:44pm
Dean:

From my proggy friends whom I tipped off about this morning's show:

"Since Coulter's a fan of the Canterbury sound, you might try turning him on to a contemporary British band called Sanguine Hum that Paul recently discovered on Spotify (they've also got several tracks on YouTube). Assuming he's not already familiar with them, of course.

"They started out as a Canterbury-revival band but have since added a harder edge to the sound. Nice haunting melodies, lots of time-signature gymnastics, and a decent vocalist to boot."
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks for the tip, Dean. Do you know 'em, wood-elf?
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

@ davefromtoronto: Did Max Webster perform in elaborate costumes and face paint, as they appear on some of their album covers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

The name rings a faint bell, but I've never played them on any of my podcasts. Don't think I've heard them. It just goes to show how much of this stuff is out there now. I'm finding international neo-Canterbury stuff (of varying quality) *all the time* now with Youtube and Soundcloud and Bandcamp now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Dean Your proggy friends might like my local friends (they're actually from Canterbury, as I am) *Syd Arthur*. They started off with revivalist tendencies, but are moving it forward in fascinating ways. They're about to release a monster third album.
  1:53pm
Dean:

Now that's funny. When I served on the board of a non-profit arts organization devoted to nurturing new playwrights, one of the playwrights, Tanya Shaffer, wrote a play dubbed "Sid Arthur." Thanks, wood-elf. I'll forward your comments to my friends.

my own view of neo prog is that there is too much metal content!
ie Dream Theatre etc.
Recently tried to get into some prog metal - but found myself attracted to death/thrash/black metal.

Well several months later of listening to WM Berger MY CASTLE OF QUIET show on WFMU AND Diane KA=mikaze as well - I am beginning to really like it - anyway any chance of playing the latest Cattle Decapitation album Tony?
