Hi Scott & everybody!

Where are you doing yours, Dave in Vermont? In Vermont? Or somewhere else? And what country/ies do you plan on teaching in? I'm sticking with Eastern Europe for the time being, but I might try S. Korea or the U.A.E. at some point.

@CLiff, UVM. There is a lot up in the air right now but thinking about China, Japan, S. Korea or wherever life takes me when it is time. There is a good Master's Program at St Michael's College here that I am thinking about too. I am still getting my bachelor's (TESOL cert as part of it)

Neil, a woman who teaches the class I volunteer with highly recommends the Cambridge program. I don't know its exact title. I think it is 1-3 months and they have a program in Montreal.
  3:20pm
Cliff:

Wild Neil - If you want to teach in Europe or the Middle East, you're going to need Oxford CELTA or something at an equivalent level, an accredited course with at least 6-8 hours of observed in-class teaching. Don't bother with any of the ones you can take online by passing a few quizzes, they may sound easy but they're not going to get you a good job

Dave in Vermont - I've heard the situation is a lot different in China and S. Korea, they really have a need for native English speakers at the primary school level so they're willing to take practically anyone as long as you've graduated from college and haven't committed any crimes here. In S. Korea they will even set you up with your own free housing, and they pay very well and you can save up (or spend :) a lot of money there. On the other hand, you'll be teaching little kids instead of college students or adults.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Dave in Vermont:

@Cliff - I have heard that about S Korea. I have also heard that depending on who hires you it can be sketchy. I have heard the terms "horror stories" and "wild west" from independent people. But paying down student debt is very attractive.
Do you know if there is some kind of statute of limitations on the crime thing? Mine was 20+ years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm
Dave in Vermont:

They let me into Canada now.
  3:31pm
Cliff:

Dave in Vermont - I think it depends on the crime, they're mainly just making sure to keep out serial killers and bank robbers and drug dealers from the country. They're *very* conservative about drug use, so if your crime was something like smoking a joint they might give you a hard time about it. But I think they're more focused on major felonies. If they're letting you into Canada now then at least that's a good sign ;)

If you go with the hagwons (the private schools), they've been known to pull all kinds of shit like not paying you for a couple months, or terminating your contract early without giving any cause. Check out some of the stuff on forums.eslcafe.com. A lot of these horror stories were from years ago, and many of those schools have now closed and the rest have cleaned up their act somewhat. If you go with a government school instead, then generally you will have no problems, they will honor your contract to the letter and pay you on time.

Avatar 3:34pm

@Clff-WOW, CELTA costs about $2,700 bucks to get and takes 4 weeks...which is pretty good for a cert that is taken 'round the world...

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Uncle Michael:

Ain't it just, Stashu?!
  3:42pm
Cliff:

Yeah, generally the good courses are going to be 4 weeks long, and taught on-site in the country you want to be teaching in. I went with the The Language House at Prague, it's 4 weeks and $1500 + 500 or so for housing. It's not officially certified by Oxford themselves, but it's still well-known among the language schools in the area from what I've read, and you do 12 hours of observed teaching which is twice as much as what most programs do. They also have in-house visa assistants and a large support network of former students around the world to help new teachers get acclimated wherever they go.

Oxford has TEFL schools in London and Barcelona in addition to Prague, but it's practically impossible for a non-EU citizen to get a work visa in Western Europe for teaching ESL. Eastern Europe is still a little more welcoming of Americans/Australians/NZlanders/etc.

Wild Neil - Also Slovakia is a good country to teach in (very similar to the Czech Republic in culture and teaching opportunites), the Baltic countries (but look out for Putin, he's right next door), and Germany will sometimes take non-EU teachers as well. There's also Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, and Serbia, but they're a bit more sketchy from what I've heard. Sarajevo is supposed to be pretty nice though. I think that's pretty much it as far as options for Americans in the EU.

You could also teach in Russia - no wait, in Russia, English teaches YOU! But if you're willing to put up with the political climate there there's supposed to be a lot of jobs available there, and they will definitely take in Americans.

When's the last time Google just used their regular logo? It seems like six days out of the week it's somebody's 147th birthday or the commemoration of some historical event from 382 years ago or whatever.

Michael in Seattle - I'm just going to assume they're already awesome because they spell their name with a hachek over a z. And they're often compared to both Fugazi and Men at Work?! (trying to imagine how that would sound) Thanks for the tip!

@jake I prefer whatever it is we were just listening to. Was that Laetitia Sadier?

"Už jsme doma are a progressive rock band from Prague....The Prague Post has termed them one of "the two great bastions of the Czech alternative scene" (along with Psí vojáci)."

Really gotta how to pronounce those Czech words, maybe all the accent marks are to make up for the lack of vowels

Thanks for the show today, Scott!
