Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:43am Parq:

Robert, I don't know this for a stone-cold fact, but my understanding is that all of the money Nachum raises is sent into the general fund, so I assume the station total does include the JMAM pledges. Hava nagila!

  9:51am Listener Robert:

I remember close to 40 yrs. ago I was collecting donations in a small group of us for $ to affiliate us with an organiz'n, and suddenly I looked at what I had in my hand & announced we were over the top. I wondered how that happened, & later figured I must've erred by counting some of my own out-of-pocket change making -- like the puzzle about the extra shoes or something.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

Hey, Doug. Just in time for DSW to soothe my soul.

I know the station needs money; I know you, Doug, have been dealing with some immense family issues; but I just this morning left my iphone on the Long Island Rail Road, so everything is now crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of the Brothers Koch, I did a double-take yesterday morning when I heard that Morning Edition on NPR was brought to us, in part, by Koch Industries.

That is some bullshit right there!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:54am doctorjazz:

Bring it on! Free jazz lives (on FMU!)
(the Ware is actually beautiful!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:54am Brian in UK:

Once you click the + it will confirm just below the dropdown that you have pledged to Doug's show.
  9:55am Listener Robert:

So that's what I was trying to figure here, i.e. excluding the possibility of double counting. If the total Nachum announced a few mins. ago was just raised today, i.e. none of it having figured already into the thermometers on WFMU's front page, then that's extremely impressive.
Avatar 9:57am Listener dc 108581:

They're taking over everything. Anybody see the article over at huffpost about how the Republicans may be planning to run 3rd-part candidate, ensuring no one will get enough electoral votes enabling congress to appoint the president?? THAT shit is scary.
  9:57am Listener Robert:

I've met David Koch about 3 times since 1980. He's a fun & interesting guy. We didn't quite overlap in our rugby-playing years in NYC, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
Nachum's totals each day do get entered into the pledge thermometer. Not sure if all of his total from today is in yet. Today is the last day of the marathon from JM in the AM, so it's always a huge final push for them.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:59am Parq:

I would say that if the thermometer jumps perceptibly in the next hour or so, that'll be our answer. As for NPR, I'm not the least bit surprised. On the contrary, I'm sure someone over there passionately argued that it would be unfair and partisan not to take their money.
  10:00am Listener Robert:

Thanks, Doug, and yes, I know the pledgers always seem to have a sense of drama & suspense about it, leading to back-loading of the pledge totals on all the shows, not just Nachum's.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:00am listener james from westwood:

NPR is dead. It died to me when its Planet Money segment was sponsored by Goldman Sachs. They started that segment BECAUSE of the mess fucking Goldman Sachs created!

Pledge to radio that is never a mess. (Except for the old Wreck This Mess program.) Pledge to WFMU for radio that is free from the vampire squid and its blood funnel.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:03am Alex In Illinois:

Back in the late 1980's, when I lived inthe NYC area, I used to listen to a show called "Wasted Vinyl". I think it was freeform. It is where I first heard Najima Ahktar and learned about Asha Bosley. I might call it a precursor to Give The Drummer Some.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:04am Parq:

Alex, that was Rob Weissberg! He changed the name of the show to Trans Pacific Sound Paradise at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am joe:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:05am Alex In Illinois:

I forgot to mention to everyone that "Wasted Vinyl" was on WFMU. I think I pledged support during that show. I think I still have an old WFMU listener's guide from back then.
  10:05am Listener Robert:

Writing of David Koch reminds me: I was always skeptical about Dave Emory's series, but still found it interesting. I wondered whether he'd ever get around to fingering ME as part of a conspiracy. Not quite, but one day he mentioned people that I knew, and that's when I switched from listening to his show seriously to listening for laughs.

There was a great version of Mathie Grove by Fairport Convention on their Liege & Lief album. I haven't heard this one before.
Avatar 🥁 11:04am βrian:

I hope all the pledged funds don't have to go toward fixing the web site. What a slurry of offal!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:04am Brian in UK:

Hello Hugo, guessing this was recorded a few years before the Fairports.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Lane Gray:

"The Schickel Shamble"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
Mathie Grove has also been recorded with the titles "Lord Daniel's Wife" and "Little Musgrove."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Lane Gray:

Oops. I'd thought you were commenting on the theme. I'm still on my first cup of coffee. That's brilliant
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am joe:

@ifny don't want to speak for Doug but one option of what you might do is put the correct city in and select any state than leave a note in the comments field that you are in Canada.
Avatar 11:10am chromaphone:

I was listening to Fairport Conventions "Matty Groves" just the other day which is great.

Avatar 11:13am chromaphone:

Hi guy.
Avatar 11:14am Flash Strap:

god her phrasing on this is identical to Porter Wagoner's usual affectations. Sounds exactly like the way he sings "Cassie"

makes sense, of course
Avatar 11:14am ifny:

@Joe I believe the problem with that is that it messes up billing -- you must have the same address that your CC has or it will automatically not approve the submission. So it wouldn't allow the donor to complete the transaction. Although since WFMU's interface is custom, perhaps they customised that plug-in. I didn't get that far so I don't know. But then, it is always a nice excuse to phone in and talk to the super friendly phone volunteers :)

I prefer the gal before Dolly. Dolly has the hills in her voice, Norma Jean has the honky-tonk in hers

Hugo, yes on the Saturday evening as we were dog sledding the sky cleared and just as we stopped they came out. Stunning. A very enjoyable, if short holiday.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21am Alex In Illinois:

In a novel by Phillip K. Dick, they do shoot down "God". Well, they shoot down an alien satellite that transmits visions to people.

I think the T-Shirts should list the on-line streams on the back, or maybe even the front, so that more people will know that they can listen to WFMU around the world.

Brian: So could I.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Parq:

I realize this is a side point, and overly serious, but I can't let that crack about "so much hate on the left and the right" pass. The notion that the left is motivated by hate as much as the right is bullshit the right dreamed up. They realized that they had gone so far into the realm of childish, hateful behavior that they only way they could save face with America was to spread the lie that both sides are equally as bad.
