App-ing it this morn. My plan to sleep in and then attend the Antiquarian Book Fair has been thwarted by (a) my teen's fury; (b) jack hammering on the sidewalk; (c) a not-coincidental visit from our landlord; and (d) my tween's decision to cash in her get-out-of-school-free card (a clearly misguided holiday gift from us) today. DJ, take me away!

I saw Steve Kuhn in NYC a few weeks ago. Great trio. Billy Drummond on traps. One of this year's best music experiences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
Steve Kuhn was the original pianist in the John Coltrane quartet, preceding McCoy Tyner! (But you knew that.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:09am doctorjazz:

Now that we discuss him, I do recall the Chris Mcgregor name (senior moment..), but I don't have anything in my collection by him. I'll try to remedy that one of these days, thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, ifny! Wish I knew whappened next!
  10:10am Mr C:

Kenny Dorham was his first band. He talked about him and played Blue Bossa.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:10am listener james from westwood:

Always dug how "Breaking Bad"'s producers engaged a corrido combo to write and perform a narcocorrido tune for the cold open to one of the episodes, serving both as a music video and a montage to show how the Mexican drug lords were planning a response to this upstart to the north.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@annie
Art Tatum was paranoid about other pianists copying his fingering, so he sometimes performed with a handkerchief cover his hands. As if anyone could copy his fingering!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am Parq:

"Luz Arcos" kind of reminded me of that weird, shrill, kid-singer Mexican recording that John Schnall used to use as his opening theme.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:14am Parq:

Doug, my dad was a huge Tatum fan and used to go see him on 52nd Street regularly. He told me how fans (including him) would approach Art at the bar between sets and try to ingratiate themselves. Aloof as can be, he was having none of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@ljfw
OK, now I really gotta watch Breaking Bad.

@Parq
Wow, you pulled that one out of the ether. Long live John Schnall!
Avatar 10:16am ifny:

@Doug Schulkind perhaps the monkey saws the magician in half?
  10:16am Listener Gregory:

Like Art Tatum, I cover my fingers while typing, so no one can copy my inimitable wit.
  10:16am Listener Gregory:

Wait, if it's inimitable, why am I worried about people copying it? Damn!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:23am Uncle Michael:

Good morning, Drummers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:23am listener james from westwood:

I'm sure Uncle Michael's heard it from a zillion different folks, but the "Breaking Bad" spinoff, "Better Call Saul," had an honest-to-God mention of the Hinky Dinky supermarket chain 2 episodes ago. Almost lost my teeth when I heard it but was on the road so couldn't comment on HDT: heisenbergchronicles.tumblr.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:25am Uncle Michael:

Yep, James. If I could find contact information for Gordon Smith, the writer, I'd be very happy.

Avatar 10:44am Mayuko:

makes perfect sense, this Napoleon Strickland already is sounding totally like traditional festival music from Japan.

  10:56am Dean:

On the way to work today I was listening to the campus radio station. They played a female vocal rendition of "Cherokee," including a killer rhythm section, bass and drums, along with a B-3 and a horn section. I missed the back-announce and the station's playlist takes forever to update. Any idea who it might have been?
