This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening, all. Gorgeous album covers, Flash.

Hey there Danny! How you doing?
Avatar 7:11pm
Flash Strap:

I just found these, and some others, two days ago. at a thrift shop that draws from a community which, y'know, is generally unlikely to have these kinds of records around. so it felt extra special
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Little Danny:

Good, man! Hoping that next Thursday's gonna inaugurate some shit for the one-two radio punch.
Avatar 7:14pm

that's great news, but it tears me up that i won't be there for that first one-two! I'm off the air for the next two weeks, alas

it's sooooo good. i wish i had a better copy, mine sounds sort of crummy. relatively crummy for something so good i mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm
Stepchild:

Flash I've got to keep a discogs window open while I listen to your show. I've just got to! And it's saying the catalog number following the Bali 7", LD 340, is also a 7" and it dates it to 1957, FWIW.
Avatar 7:33pm
hyde:

did you say your Musique du Bali label was trashed? there's clean scans of a copy in the Bibliotheque Nationale: gallica.bnf.fr... de France
Avatar 7:33pm
Flash Strap:

oh interesting, i wasn't able to discern the date. 57 makes sense
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

no, the label's fine, it's just in french and i was a little bamboozled trying to sort it all out
Avatar 7:37pm
Flash Strap:

@Stepchild: i do that too, by the way. it's pretty fun using discogs to dig deeper on anything you hear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm

Now /that/ is an amazing resource, hyde! I am keeping that one.
Avatar 7:39pm

yeah i gotta explore that !

This record has some wild stuff. I like how it's recorded, lots of ambient noises
Avatar 7:53pm

Incredible that you found these at a thrift shop Evan
Avatar 7:55pm
Flash Strap:

I've found some really unbelievable things in thrift shops–some funk and jazz LPs that I still can't believe I paid less than 50 bucks for, let alone 50 cents–but these are certainly among the most unlikely, literally exotic in every way, thrift shop finds of my life
Avatar 7:56pm
Flash Strap:

these beautiful birds
Avatar 7:57pm

I found some interesting records in North Dakota - not a lot there but minimal competition
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

that counts for a lot!
Avatar 7:58pm
ndbob:

Time to go - excellent show Evan - so you will be off the next two weeks?
Avatar 7:59pm
Flash Strap:

that's how i've found so many great exotica records i think. just less competition for the genre in general
Avatar 8:00pm
Flash Strap:

hate to see you leave, bob! yeah, next two weeks I'll be gone. But Danny will be debuting, so don't miss that!
Avatar 8:00pm

the thrift store finds are the best, because you know the chances are so low in among all those Perry Como, Foghat and 101 Strings lp's

this track is too good, i don't think we're gonna make it
Avatar 8:52pm

even the good ones, who cares

maybe even pre ska-revival
Avatar 8:53pm

also Aerosmith
Avatar 8:54pm

I could exclude the post 1970 Grateful Dead
Avatar 8:57pm

i would exclude Spyrogyra style jazz fusion. but i'm afraid if we start naming all our exclusions, someone's gonna get their toes stepped on. i'm already looking a little bit askance at that cali punk thing ;)

@Melinda that's hilarious. i'm with ndb on this one--i hated the Carpenters for a long time, then got on board. when i was in a bad lounge band we used to cover "Close To You" and after awhile i really started to dig it.
Avatar 9:16pm

Under appreciated. Sleepy is still doing stuff in the studio.
I've been his fan since 1980.. his was my first reggae record
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
melinda:

I love playing vintage smooth tunes in the store where I work. It's generally not what people expect to hear, yet it doesn't cross over into 'inappropriate for a retail environment', which much of my taste could. It's hard to know and I tend to push the boundaries. I once got a positive customer response to the Langley Schools Music Project, so I played it again, only to have another customer get mean and contemptuous and leave the store.
Avatar 9:21pm
hyde:

@coelecanth ok, that is also hilarious
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

Ah the Langley Schools - great stuff - I remember when Irwin played it for the first time - announcing it as a major discovery.
Avatar 9:23pm

@Melinda: that's really funny

@C: that's even funnier because it involves a formal complaint, the ultimate indignity
Avatar 9:25pm

I got asked to take off music I was playing a few times when I worked in a video store - but I could usually get away with some pretty odd stuff.
Avatar 9:25pm

@bob: that's crazy to think about. seems like when i was coming up that was long-established legend, foundational stuff
Avatar 9:26pm
