Hi, Dave. Nice of you to come in and not play hooky like so many others today. Where's the commitment?!?!

They're all drinkin' @ the Record Fair. They're no fools.

Dave Mandl:

Hey RRN63, Jake, Ken, geezerette, RTD.

Dave Mandl:

I missed a show a couple of weeks ago, so...
Avatar 10:06pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

AH, spooky. Was just laying out an advert for this particular Claudia rekkid...
Avatar 10:06pm
Dave Mandl:

I was at the record fair earlier today, too early for me to miss the show tonight.
  10:07pm
JakeGould:

I had one beer at the record fair today and it didn’t ruin my life…
  10:07pm
Carmichael:

Aloha, Dave. I just finished painting a room. I'm beat, need a beer and some righteous tunes.
Avatar 10:07pm
Dave Mandl:

@RTD: Ha, amazing coincidence. But I play the Claudias a lot.
Avatar 10:09pm
Dave Mandl:

Hi Carmichael. I'll do my best.
Avatar 10:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...then they go home w/ all this degenerate vinyl & have mad hippie freakout orgies in the hipster City in May...
  10:10pm
JakeGould:

I was pleased to see one dealer attempting to sell opened/used “Purple Rain” and “1999” CDs for $16 a pop. Capitalism!
Avatar 10:13pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

…followed by Happy the Man. Most groovy. Hard to believe it's already been 11 years since seeing 'em at ProgDay...
Avatar 10:15pm
Dave Mandl:

I bought no records at the fair. Not bragging about that--I just didn't have time.
Avatar 10:16pm
Dave Mandl:

@RTD: Ah, that must have been some show.

RTD, if you tell me you saw Caravan there, I will yell angrily.
  10:20pm
JakeGould:

@DaveMandl: Did you see any live performances? James Chance was pretty amazing. The guy has still got it.
Avatar 10:20pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

alas, no Caravan. I think Mike Keneally Band or Glenn Phillips might have headlined. Far Corner was fun (cuneiform-label outfit), The Muffins = excellent, naturally. Also first & only time seeing The Spacious Mind: they altered everyone's DNA forever.
Avatar 10:22pm
Dave Mandl:

@Jake: I did see Mr. Chance. Yeah, great performance.
Avatar 10:23pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I wonder if anyone who's never taken psychedelics describes music as altering DNA...not that we'll ever find out...
Avatar 10:30pm
Dave Mandl:

I'd like to see before and after shots of that DNA.
  10:31pm
Carmichael:

Caravan and Hatfield and The North played at Progfest once. Other side of the country, alack.
  10:34pm
JakeGould:

Dude the 63 years old but the second he had to perform, it’s like he’s always done that thing he does. Which is probably the truth. It was amazing.
  10:40pm
ScottC:

Always thought that Canned Heat's drummer kicked ass - seriously...
  10:42pm
Pete L:

f ing love Canned Heat
Under rated
Thanks
Avatar 10:42pm
Dave Mandl:

Huh, I've got to listen to the drummer more closely. Never noticed him.
  10:43pm
Carmichael:

All I remember is that their bass player was Chicken Hirsch.
  10:44pm
Carmichael:

Pardon me while I swoon.

Avatar 10:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Older sibling had 'On The Road Again' 45 in my *very* early years - begins & ends w/ that spectrum of harmonics. In the Monterey Pop film - there's Bob 'Bear' Hite - & the rest look real mid-60s geeky (like that drummer). But they know the Blues alright! I read Beefheart felt them rivals on that scene...
  10:51pm
Carmichael:

Bob Hite was the lead singer. Al "Blind Owl" Wilson was the lead guitar. Both OD'd back in the 70s.
Avatar 10:55pm
Dave Mandl:

Ah, right, Al Wilson. Thanks, folks. Did he really die that long ago? And yeah, they were a pretty kick-ass blues band.
Avatar 10:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sad. Jim Morrison liked them too. Thx for that track.
  10:55pm
P-90:

Hi Dave! Enjoying this.
Avatar 10:56pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey, P-90. And welcome chinpou, JoeRay, ScottC, Pete L.
  10:59pm

Yeah, sad. I have a live video them playing Let's Work Together, Wilson playing slide guitar. Amazing stuff.

Avatar 11:05pm
Dave Mandl:

(Just kidding. I'm on my own here.)
  11:07pm
Carmichael:

Speaking of God, I saw a horrible 70s movie last night called God Told Me To. Tony LoBianco and Piper Laurie. Bunch of random killings by possessed people. One of the extras (a killer) was Andy Kaufman.
  11:08pm
Carmichael:

This, my friends, is Rory Gallagher.

goo evening Dave and others
  11:12pm
Carmichael:

They don't normally have a sax player. Was that John Helliwell?
Avatar 11:12pm
Dave Mandl:

Evening, coelacanth.
Avatar 11:13pm
Dave Mandl:

Yes, Rory Gallagher!
  11:18pm
Carmichael:

Seriously, saxophone by Rory Gallagher?!?
Avatar 11:22pm
Dave Mandl:

No, guitar and vocals. Not sure offhand who the sax player was.
  11:27pm
Carmichael:

Helliwell has a pedigree with Irish bands. I could explain it, but it's 2 beers worth of convo and not fit for public consumption. Wiki tells me, though, that Rory was playing sax. It may even be true.
Avatar 11:29pm
Dave Mandl:

OK, I'll take your word for it. I had no idea he played sax.
Avatar 11:33pm
slugluv1313:

@ Carmichael -- omg (!) -- i think i saw "God Told Me To" many many years ago -- maybe on late night (pre-cable) TV? yeah really awful/cheesey
@ Dave -- whatever/whoever is out there, i would much rather be mindful/respectful of that presence, than make myself nuts over some (man-made) religion (being raised Roman Catholic will do that to ya, i guess! )

Rory indeed played sax in his early years with his band Taste. Check out Rory switching from guitar to sax at around the 5 minute mark on his live Beat Club performance of "It's Happened Before, it'll Happen Again" -- https://youtu.be/N0_NvpLGmUw
