Both events are presented by one of New York’s finest world music presenters, Live Sounds; info on both events at http://livesounds.org

More about Saturday’s screening and performance, and DakhaBrakha:

DakhaBrakha will perform their original score to a screening of the classic 1930 pre-Stalin silent film Earth (Zemliya) by Aleksandr Dovzhenko, considered to be one of the most important films and filmmakers of the Soviet era. The lyrical and poetic film depicts the lives of Ukrainian farmers with intense close-ups and impressive expanses of the landscape and is a passionate tribute to the land, nature and to the people that work it.

DakhaBrakha is a playful band from Kiev that researches and then reshapes ancient and contemporary Ukrainian music and theatre, creating an unexpected range of sounds in concert that are at once riotous and mesmerizing. eflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian “ethnic chaos” band DakhaBrakha create a world of unexpected new music.

The name DakhaBrakha is original, outstanding and authentic at the same time. It means “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theatre director – Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theatre work has left its mark on the band performances – their shows have never been staged without the scenic effects. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music, the band has added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, thus creating bright, unique and unforgettable image of DakhaBrakha. It will help to open up the potential of Ukrainian melodies and to bring it to the hearts and consciousness of the younger generation in Ukraine and the rest of the world as well. Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture

Hello Scraps deSelby and everyone, thanks for listening!
Avatar 6:19pm Scraps deSelby:

This is almost (I don't know yet, but in the running) the best show at WFMU as far as consistent quality song to song.
Avatar 6:21pm Marc Francis:

Thanks for the beautiful music!
  6:32pm Dave:

Hi Rob! Could you play something by Irka Mateo, who will be at Joe's Pub tomorrow night? She has a new song "Palenquera" or something from her album "Anacaona", such as the song "Liborio" would be great. Thanks!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Bas NL:

Hi Rob! (Panting) Just back home from an evening (here) of live music..
  6:49pm katie:

Be prepared. We've lost power 3 times since 6pm. The storm? Or just the joys of Hoboken.
  6:50pm katie:

Make that 4, no 5 times. Am unplugging the computers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Rob W:

Hi Bas, Dave, I'll see what I can do - Katie, so far so good here in JC - fingers crossed!
  6:54pm Carmichael:

Heya Rob and fellow Pacific Rimmers.
  6:58pm katie:

Call me before you head home. If we don't have power the bill paying needs to be done from there.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Bas NL:

I saw Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba on stage last year.. what a feast that was!! And the cd 'Ba Power' is great!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I was planning on crossing the Walkway Bridge in Poughkeepsie, but with the looming thunderclouds, I suspect it's closed. Will hang here at home and try that adventure another time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Rob W:

Sensible move Ken from HP. Katie, noted... Bas, yes, Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba put on a great show! I saw them most recently at one of our BAM Metrotech free lunchtime concerts last summer (Sunny Ade is playing the Metrotech festival this year by the way, Brooklynites).
