went against CITES rules. Internationally laws are very confusing and frustrating for many people trying to sell internationally. In Europe, they can and will confiscate a vintage guitar with a braz board even if you've had it for 20 years or whatever if you list on Ebay.

Yeah it was very dumb on their part. And they got nailed.

Cecile:

well, I'm not condoning it, but I'm sure for a luthier the beauty of the wood and the possibility of working with it outweighed common sense.

Would eucalyptus be a good guitar wood? I have a patio table made from responsibly sourced plantation raised Eucalyptus...it really pretty but not terribly DENSE. The Boardwalk in Atlantic City is made from this beautiful Ipe wood that looks like dark chocolate...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
Marcel M:

So the wood Gibson took was not particularly valuable. Was just sourced illegally.

Cecile:

dunno. talk to your friendly neighborhood luthier. They'll know.

i wanna make a guitar out of balsa wood.

it would be easy to smash, and you could put wings on it and fly it during breaks.

Wild Neil:

@Common-I wonder if it would sound like a head-cold so muffled and deadened! Coney Island boardwalk is Ipe too...lasted 25 years!

probably sound like shit, though. ;)

aside, and related to wood: i saw a glamourous photo of ritzy bldgs - and one had PETRIFIED WOOD STAIRS!

P-90:

"Teiscp El Ray"? Japanese, inexpensive but he sounds so good on it. He probably chose to sell it off at the end of the tour because bringing it back home would have been a hassle too. What a shame!

The Brazilian rosewood Gibson got raided for was from "legit" sources like stumps and recycled paneling, but they didn't have all the proper documentation on file and the FBI decided there had to be an investigation. They were basically looking to make an example of (well-known) Gibson, to show they were serious about these importation restrictions on endangered woods.

@herb.nyc: Petrified wood sounds like a nicer set of stairs than a pile of glass. Glass stairs creep me out.

Bravo, Joe. Wonderful intro to C. Joynes for a newbie.

I helped build a deck out of ipe once. We went through a lot of saw blades and broke a lot of screws. Dense stuff.

@P-90-Yeah, that sounds more like it...Gibson got screwed for a medium-sized clerical error...and got treated like a hostage situation.
Regarding the balsa wood guitar, it could be a shitty guitar...and do a duet with shitty flute!
@Brian-Was the Ipe like oak, or even harder?

Hell of a show today, with Trouble and Mr. Joynes, who is terrific but new to me. Top marks, @Joe McG!
