I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Hello! Wasn't this sampled by some techno group in the 90s or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

Love this piece. Love the seeming impatience in "Maestro, please," like rehearsals have been going on all day.

Hey everyone, hope you're comfortable in this new timeslot Mayuko.

@Ike Yep, here you go: www.youtube.com... - did that reach the USA? (Apologies if you're not there) - there were plenty of other tunes like it...

Welcome and Good Luck in your new time slot, Mayuko! I'm happy because I'll be able to listen live more often.

Hello, everyone!!! Thank you for tuning in! Happy to have you all with me on this new time slot! Ike, I didn't know that but I'd TOTALLY dance to it as is if it gets played at a club. especially the #3, totally techno in itself already.

Didn't Afrirampo make a record with some Baka people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Ike:

Ha ha @Jason_, no no, I meant one of the water drums (#1, I think), not Sesame St. And no, I don't think what you linked ever made it over here to the U.S.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm

Ha, I did think it unlikely...! There was Deep Forest who did a couple of records, maybe it was them? A couple of Belgian guys IIRC.

yah, Afrirampo has an album recorded in Cameroon, I seem to remember we even have it in the fmu library, although I haven't listen to it yet. Funny word-playing title it has.

This Takashi Yoshimatsu track is really nice
Avatar 12:53pm
Mayuko:

fred, it literally means "'Baka' has come". Baka in Japanese means silly/stupid. So I think they're referring themselves to be "silly", sounds like "these silly people (Afrirampo) have come all the way from Japan to meet Baka (not silly, the real Baka) people" making fun of themselves a bit, sort of.
  12:55pm
david:

Wow, this is strangely lush and beautiful.

(As a person from the eastern side of Japan, it sounds to me very much like Osaka kind of sense of humor)

That makes sense. Afrirampo look like the kind of people who can make fun of themselves. I only saw them twice but both were memorable. I even watched their last show online, the only time I did such a thing. I really love this band

Good afternoon, Mayuko and Drummerers! Will you still visit/fill-in Dave Hill's show or do you have other obligations on Mondays now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
listener james from westwood:

Occasionally I'll see how countries outside the US approach, for instance, the way US humor is sometimes based on regionalities (like a Southern accent) and how it affects the way studios in these countries redo the voice track with the localities in THEIR country that will pick up on this nuance and I find it >fascinating.<
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
fred:

"Trois visages de Liège" means "Three faces of Liège" (Liège is a city in Belgium)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
Ike:

In the middle of the program, I often hear you say "this has been Play Vertigo", but due to a quirk of English, this makes it sound like the show is over! Ha. I suggest "this is Play Vertigo." I hope you don't mind me pointing that out.

It would probably take a couple hours of web searching to compile a list of all the Sesame Street songs that have appeared on WFMU over the years. Then those songs could be a marathon premium!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
fred:

@Ike: You editor! It makes a lot more sense when listening to archives, as I used to have to do
Avatar 1:18pm

haha, I think Sesame Street people probably would have a problem with that marathon premium, Ken!

I realize I've been saying "stuff like that" a lot lately. Weirdly, it helped break the ice with some corporate types (though I should add they're in California and working in the music industry)
Avatar 1:22pm
Mayuko:

hmm?! I thought when it's over it would be "was" - no "have been" concept in Japanese so it's tricky! It's nice to be told though, I was embarrassed when I realized that the other day I had been saying "on top of the set" instead of "at the top of (is correct, right?!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
fred:

Mayuko, it's your show. What you say is correct, as long as it's understood. Nobody wants to have the playlist overtaken by a grammar dispute between Ike and me.
  1:29pm
P-90:

Right, "at the top of the set" means at or near the beginning, the "bottom of the set" is the end. I think it extends from traditional English slang expressions about the time. Like: "the top of the hour" is the beginning" and when you say something like: "near the bottom of the hour", it means something happened or will happen late in the particular hour.
I hope this isn't just more confusing...
Avatar 1:30pm
Mayuko:

Man, that senses of humor based on regionalities in the US - it would take forever for me to get it. Not that I really know Osaka sense of humor either just because I am from Japan, but it does seem like people from there are generally good at making fun of themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
fred:

People away from power usually get pretty good at making fun of themselves. They'll be made fun of anyway, so it makes sense to get better at it
Avatar 1:37pm
Mayuko:

I basically try listen to what other DJs say and steal it, the problem is I often steal it wrong! It's impressive how james who IS an editor have survived all those wrong grammars, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm

Steal It Wrong — another great name for a radio show!
Avatar 1:42pm
Mayuko:

It's funny, speaking of children's book, I just finished "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E L Konigsburg - 12 yrs old girl always picks on her 9 yr old brother's grammar and say "what kind of English is that?!" and the mistakes he makes is pretty much the same as the ones I made!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
fred:

Proof that you're young at heart
Avatar 1:46pm
Mayuko:

I probably should have changed the show name as well when I changed to Saturdays, haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: Steal what works, adapt it to your groove, and work it! Best believe there'll be a DJ down the line taking notes from Play Vertigo for her show, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Ike:

I guess "top of the hour" comes from old analog clocks with long hands and short hands. When the long hand points to the "top", it's the beginning (and end) of an hour. So isn't the "bottom of the hour" at :30? You don't hear "bottom of the hour" too often, though.
  1:47pm
P-90:

Also, just thinking: isn't part of the humor of the "Baka ga kita" pun that the phrase Baka ga kita sounds a little like "Bhagavad Gita", the famous hindu text?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
melinda:

I'm late but hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I've never heard anyone refer to :15 or :45 as the "side of the hour." Sounds weird to even think about it that way.
  Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
mdashkin:

Well, I for one am going to start saying "at the side of the hour" starting now. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
fred:

@Ken: if it sounds weird, how come it hasn't caught up around here?
Avatar 1:52pm
Mayuko:

I should adopt those top and bottom and the side of the hours thing to give myself even more vertigo. Hello melinda, thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
fred:

@mdashkin: apologies, you came first
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Ike:

@Mayuko@1:22, "has/have been" is definitely confusing. That sort of thing doesn't seem to appear in a lot of other languages, and off the top of my head, I don't know why we keep it around, but language often isn't logical.
Avatar 1:54pm
Mayuko:

"Bhagavad Gita"! I wonder if they do know?! I wouldn't be surprised, they look like the kind of people who know that sort of things.
  Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
mdashkin:

Some radio shows will say "10 mins before the hour," or "20 mins after the hour"...but they never say "it's now the hour!" You wonder if the hour will ever arrive!! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Ohboyohboyohboyohboy! The swag has arrived! Let's see what's in here!
Avatar 1:57pm
Mayuko:

"it's now the hour!" sounds good to me, although I am not exactly sure what it means. I just like its sound. "It's now the hour on Play Vertigo!" Sounds positive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Ike:

@mdashkin, before the days of streaming, you could ALWAYS tell if it was a syndicated radio show if they said that! Because if it was a local show, then why not just give the local time?! But now that nearly every station streams, it always makes sense to say that, for the people listening from other time zones (except Newfoundland and Chennai, ha ha).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
fred:

@Ike: I think Wittgenstein proved that a perfectly logical language would be useless
  Swag For Life Member 2:00pm

The hour is almost at hand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
fred:

Is it over already? No!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
listener james from westwood:

The potential exists for 3 hours of Vertigo, someday....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Ike:

@fred, you are clearly more well-read than I am. I'll have to get to Wittgenstein someday. But I'm sure he's right. When I see the much more logical spelling used by some other languages (Danish might be one example, IIRC) it looks less poetic to me than my language or French, though maybe that's my cultural bias.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
listener james from westwood:

Exceptionally excellent show, Mayuko! This was a treat!
