...How much of that is Albini, tho'?

You're right! Thx for bringing the Cactus Blossoms to us. Their Sound is so pure & satisfying - & 'familiar' - that the Songwriting might get under credited. They've steeped themselves in their roots & sources so consummately that they've Mastered this too.

Turtleneck Burt wantsa know:

In the liner notes of "Solid Zinc," Howard Kaylan of The Turtles explained: "Elenore was a parody of 'Happy Together.' It was never intended to be a straight-forward song. It was meant as an anti-love letter to White Whale (their record company), who were constantly on our backs to bring them another 'Happy Together.' So I gave them a very skewed version. Not only with the chords changed, but with all these bizarre words. It was my feeling that they would listen to how strange and stupid the song was and leave us alone. But they didn't get the joke. They thought it sounded good. Truthfully, though, the production on 'Elenore' WAS so damn good. Lyrically or not, the sound of the thing was so positive that it worked. It certainly surprised me."

So when MARK VOLMAN's on your show next week, could you ask him whether any specific "Elenore" nonsense lines were direct quotes from management, like "Can't you guys write a song, 'You're swell, you're my pride and joy, et cetera?'"

Someone posted this week during Amanda's show: "Elenore is the song a wfmu dj played for 3 hours once, before walking out on wfmu - never to return." Ken replies, he's not heard this, maybe twas 1968-69 fmu. Would Mark Volman know the story?

Be sure to mention The Turtles played their own instruments on the records!
