Morning Doug, drummers. Great to have you back Doug. I've been loving the last couple of shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Good morning to you, XapnoMapcase! Listening to this show will be like espresso in you ears.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:57pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Doug and all! In for the film jazz, and maybe that lady's baby. I hear he has his father's eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Aye! I nominate you, Listener James!

evening Doug and everyone!
Avatar 6:03pm ndbob:

i read the novel a few months ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy there, ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

I love how rapt you all are this evening. I guess I'm doing a rapt music show, then,
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm listener james from westwood:

@ndbob: I haven't read that one, but I did read "The Exorcist" back in college. The detective from the movie, Kinderman, is in it and has a slightly meatier role.
Avatar 6:15pm XapnoMapcase:

This is gorgeous. Reminds me of Ocean Songs
Avatar 6:17pm hyde:

hiya, drummer some-ers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Would love to hear a 3-hour version of this.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm listener james from westwood:

While we're mentioning novels that became blockbuster movies, I also sneak-read my mom's paperback of "Jaws," which she had taken on the family's annual summer Jersey Shore trip (of course), sometime in grammar school. The majority of it was over my head but I did get the "big shark = bad" message.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Awright, it's hyde!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: True of no small number of tracks I've heard on this pertick'ler show.
Avatar 6:19pm ndbob:

@James - I saw The Exorcist when it came out too - never saw Anatomy of a Murder but it's been on my list for a long tome
  6:20pm Dean:

If Wikipedia is correct, Boxhead Ensemble was formed to generate a musical soundtrack to a student movie about the Original Pantry Cafe, which is a real place in downtown LA. A friend of mine in high school owned a flower business that delivered settings to restaurants and events. We'd get up at 3:00 a.m. to drive from the east end of the county to the downtown flower market (hopping at that hour), deliver the arrangements to the west side, return via downtown for breakfast at the Pantry, then head to school, our guts busted from massive pancakes and high octane coffee. Waiters at the Pantry ("We never close.") shouted orders to the kitchen.
Avatar 6:20pm geezerette:

Hello Doug and diggers.
Pouring straight Sumatra in my ears right now.
Avatar 6:20pm XapnoMapcase:

I once read Jaws in the first week of a six week holiday in the South Pacific. Then I was too terrified to get in the water for the rest of the trip!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm listener james from westwood:

Any job that ends with a pancake and coffee binge has at least one thing going for it.
  6:24pm Mr C:

Thinking about Give the Drummer Some - and a few nice things.
  6:27pm Dean:

Hell, yeah. Problem was we were just starting our school day. And we were ordinarily pretty good, compliant students, who only very rarely posted large banners in the student quad reading, SREK CUFNM ADL LAER’OUY. Rarely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, geezerette!

I bow low to you, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Keep your eye on that Big Sur fire. My sister had to evacuate Sunday night.
Avatar 6:29pm hyde:

Walt Dickerson is kind of underrated, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
I think Dickerson would have to get rated first, before he could be considered underrated. So damn far off the radar, he.
  6:31pm Dean:

She lives near Big Sur? We're about 150 miles away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
She lives in Berkeley, but has a cabin in Big Sur. (It's the cabin Lawrence Ferlinghetti built. In Bixby Canyon, just a short gambol through the woods out to the sea and under the Bixby Bridge.
Avatar 6:34pm hyde:

@Doug true. and i have to say i've been listening to jazz-ish music for going on 40 years and i'm still just kind of getting around to him. i only just got the 1975 Whynot session with Wilbur Ware and Andrew Cyrille, and it's aces. i'm glad there's still discoveries for me to make, but when i hear Walt Dickerson now it seems he should not have been neglected!
  6:36pm Dean:

@Doug: That is amazing. I hope the fire avoids it. She's half a dozen miles from the burning park. Scary.
Avatar 6:41pm hyde:

wow, there is really nothing out there about Tracks in the Sand, the movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Doug Schulkind:

That park is her favorite place to go for walks and such.

@hyde
Yup. Over the years, I've come to half-believe it's a hoax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

I think my playing Mal Waldron's "Hillary" put her over the top in the delegate count. Someone factcheck that for me...
Avatar 6:49pm ndbob:

Of course Doug:) Actually SD put her over the top
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Next up, and last selection for the hour, one of my all-time records—which happens to be a soundtrack.

@ndbob
SD must've felt girded by my firm support.
Avatar 6:51pm hyde:

oh, i love this AEC number. i still remember when i bought this record and played it for the first time.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm listener james from westwood:

Can only imagine the context in which this epic track was used in the picture.
Avatar 6:52pm XapnoMapcase:

my kids are dancing up a storm
  6:53pm Dean:

@Doug: I'll email you two NYT stories, one from '61, the other early '62, reporting on "Tracks in the Sand." If it was a hoax, it was an elaborate one, because the early story reports on its filming and the later one on an imminent distribution deal.
Avatar 6:53pm ndbob:

@Doug that they did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm northguineahills:

There is no way in Hades that I've never faved Theme de Yo Yo, unless there;s a max to the string of memory Kenzo programmed for everyone's faves/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
Takes your breath away. I once exchanged emails with Fontella Bass about the lyrics to this number. Actually I emailed her, but never received a response. But I know what her response would have been, so I count it as received.

@XapnoMapcase
Raising kids Right!

@Dean
Thanks! Will love to read those stories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
So nice to see you! But be careful, there is a rogue version of this number floating around out there...
Avatar 6:55pm hyde:

@Dean huh, fascinating.

@Dean
Got the email. Thanks!
  6:57pm Dean:

@hyde: The '62 story mentions a "pre-release entry of 'Tracks in the Sand' at the Cannes International Film Festival."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Dig dig dig dig dig it!
Avatar 6:57pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar 6:58pm hyde:

@Dean thanks for the info. i could find zilch on the web. i assume you have lexis-nexis access! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Doug!
Avatar 6:59pm hyde:

cool show, thanks for the tunes, glad i could be here live for a change!
  7:00pm Dean:

@hyde: You're welcome, naturally. I have access to a lot of dbs. I found these stories in an archive of old NYT, which is nice because the output is a scan. Lexis won't have deep historical coverage newspapers.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:00pm listener james from westwood:

Always a blast, Doug! Thanks for the soundtrack love!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Doug Schulkind:
