Hey there, Mark R., long time no hear.
  3:12am
Mark R:

Morning, Simon--missed you the past few weeks! I played some sets of classic jazz I think you'd like. Check the playlists the past couple of shows.

Will do. I'm enjoying this Procul Harum track quite a bit. Jon Langford did a wonderful cover of "Homburg". I'm beginning to think that "Whiter Shade Of Pale" was the smallest tip of the iceberg.

You could let Alan Sillitoe decide.

Ah, yes...Alan Sillitoe might know.

I liked XTC's cover of his novel, Travels in Nihilon.

Burn in hell, Ian Anderson.
  3:37am
Mark R:

Bill Graham told the story in his book "Bill Graham Presents" about booking Rahsaan to open for Tull at the Fillmore and Rahsaan really hated them, and during his set, imitated Ian's flute playing, mocking him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am
pacific standard simon:

That story circle would be complete if Ian found a way to mock Graham for booking him over Kirk.

I <3 Kristin Hersh!
  3:47am
Mark R:

That was the format in the rock halls like the Fillmore. That's why Miles had to open for the Dead, when the Dead knew they should have been opening for him.
  3:48am
Mark R:

I know, Mary! Muses rule!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53am
pacific standard simon:

Yep, I know. That's one reason why Steve Miller was hated by blues and jazz artists from out of town.
  3:56am
Mark R:

Miles was on the bill with Neil Young's Crazy Horse headlining and Steve Miller, and after one night of going on before Steve, he decided he was going to show up so late the next night that Steve had to go on first. Steve covered it by telling the audience it was his decision.

Hi from Poland, fellas. Mrs. Parq is sleeping in, so I've got the volume low. Tuned in just in the middle of the Miles, and it sounds like I missed a great full set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11am

This is the first time I haven't had to keep the volume low. Been moving into a swingin' solo bachelor pad. No headphones!

Monk is just Home. Would be hard but interesting to explain just why...
  5:26am

What I love about Monk is he plays things that are supposed to be "wrong," but then he makes them right.

- a cornerstone of Modernism like that - & yet there's a rootsy downhome Blues thing in him...His nervous system showed us a glimpse into another way of seeing, like Syd Barrett (in completely different fields) - but it is the most Abstract that is the most Personal because we all have an Interior...Anyhow...
  5:43am
Mark R:

Speaking of Syd did you hear about the amazing 23-disc (I think) boxed set of outtakes etc. of early Floyd? Some pieces that have long been rumored to exist but never actually heard. Very expensive for hardcore Floyd/Syd freaks only, but still...
Avatar 5:56am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

$700 ! Floyd is mainstream - two overplayed albums anyway - but just undeniable. Blixa Bargeld credits them w/ introducing masses to the avant garde & it's true.
