Any excuse to play Miles is good enough for me. Hi Mark.

Just turned on the stream, I thought the Miles you're playing was Trout Mask Replica...for a second!
  4:10am
Mark R.:

Hi Simon, glad you could make it! I've actually been digging the deep, dark, electric 70s funk Miles lately. Took me a while to get there, but now I find it absolutely amazing. Still love the older stuff, too, of course...

And welcome, Joeray!

Good Morning MarK R! That Miles Davis track was fast and bulbous! New schedule - two of my favorite WFMU shows back to back: Avant Ghetto and Circle Time.
  4:21am
Mark R.:

Nice of you to say. And Carol, who filled in for me last week, is going to follow at 6. I think you'll enjoy her show, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
pacific standard simon:

I started out with the electric '70s Miles and had to work my way backwards. Worth it.
  4:23am
Mark R.:

Same with me, Simon. Started with "Bitches Brew" and then "Kind of Blue," etc. But the 70s stuff after "Bitches Brew" left me cold for a long time. Now I really like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24am
joeray:

I listened to her show last week and you're right Mark, I really liked it!
  4:25am
Mark R.:

I was very happy she got on the regular schedule, she has beautiful taste in music. Almost none of which I'd ever heard of, but she turned me on to a bunch of new artists, and isn't that the very essence of FMU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26am
pacific standard simon:

It'll be nice to have Bethany Ryker back, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27am

Inspired by this Grieg sonata. Long-hair music that doesn't sound like an NPR station.
  4:30am
Mark R.:

I loved her show, I guess for a while she was upstate or something part of the week and just physically couldn't make it, but now she's able to do it again and I'm so glad. She's another one who turns me on to all sorts of artists I never heard of that I end up loving.

...no - making insomnia worthwhile - one of FMU's great attributes.

Good morning Mark and listeners. The new schedule brings its usual handful of disappointments, exciting new shows, and welcome returns
Avatar 5:17am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@fred: Yeah.
  5:20am
Mark R.:

I've said this before--I don't envy station manager Ken's job, especially making out the schedule. As anxious as the DJs are about whether they're going to have a slot, he has to be twice as anxious knowing that no matter what he does, he's going to have to leave somebody really great off. The good news is, nothing is forever, so if you miss somebody, they might return. We were just discussing the return of Bethany Ryker earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am
pacific standard simon:

The last two DJs that I've adopted both had their shows moved after I adopted them. Hmm...
Avatar 5:23am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Mark R: Yeah.
  5:23am
Mark R.:

I'm just happy to have a slot. I really love being here with you and knowing we're all listening to music together. It takes me back to my parent's basement, only with a much bigger and cooler library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25am
pacific standard simon:

I hope that Dave Mandl just got too busy with his band or something.
Avatar 5:32am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - Mandl.
Part of the basic Ethos of the whole 'FreeForm' enterprise I understand - even as it's written - is to give voice to the Unheard, or @ least the UnderHeard - even just for its' own sake. Every DJ here does that - so no problem there...Even so, Institutions develop - & I imagine that's about how everybody wants it...
A program on FMU not only brings access to expert curating of a niche that is hard to impossible to access otherwise - it's a micro-community & culture. So - that's hard to lose. But - yes - what takes its' place will likely be something equally worthy - & - yes - no schedule lasts...One eventually realizes FMU is more than just the current schedule (fill-ins, for example)...It's an embarrassment of riches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34am
fred:

I like hearing new shows, often that brings me music that is new to me, but not new at all. And the schedule change is when I reorder my accumulated premiums (I keep them sorted by the schedule order, then stream) which is a good way to listen again to something I hadn't listened to for years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35am
pacific standard simon:

And there's always the Drummer stream. I wish Monika was on it.
Avatar 5:36am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Five streams - talk about riches...They make the point that the Drummer is its' own thing w/ its' own character, & not just the Mainstream II or the Mainstream's lower tier or something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37am
pacific standard simon:

I'm wearing my Dave Hill t-shirt right now.
Avatar 5:37am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& it seems the Drummer & Ichiban schedules fill out/up more & more?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40am
fred:

The Drummer stream makes for tough choices for me, like Sheila or Jason? I know the archives are there, but time isn't
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43am
pacific standard simon:

Keep i mind, Rabbit, that the Drummer stream is overseen by a former longtime FMU broadcast DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45am
fred:

What makes me really eager to hear new shows is that even for music I already know, another DJ will build the sets differently, bringing another perspective. And that's so important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am
pacific standard simon:

I suspect that Hollywood adaptations of Broadway musicals have ruined Bruckner for me. I keep seeing fantasy sequences in my head while listening to his stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54am
pacific standard simon:

Weird. In what world does a southerner not know what football is?
  5:54am
Mark R.:

Well, it was 1953 and football wasn't quite the institution it is today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00am
pacific standard simon:

The Marx Brothers made a movie about college football in the early thirties.
