very exciting drum check happening now ;)

Rory:

Some people on the comments board are complaining that FMU is going in a more mainstream direction Wm.
  12:25am
JayD:

Whoever "some people" are haven't heard this Forgotten Spell track, which sounds pretty damn fine.
Avatar 12:25am
Wm.:

Well...they are not listening to the right shows if they feel that way; there are still plenty of "freaky" programs here, mine for instance ... Which comments board is this? ...
Avatar 12:26am
Wm.:

... WFMU in general is amoebic, it's always changing, over the 32 years I've been associated...there have been many phases ...

Rory:

It was when Diane announced she was off the recent schedule, but yeah I agree with you. It depends on what shows you are listening too and what time you're listening.
Avatar 12:35am
Wm.:

@Rory I could not have put it better. There is no "go mainstream conspiracy" at WFMU, programming trends really shape themselves; Ken gives shows to all kinds of creative people. ...

JayD:

Worthless sounds really fantastic right now. Great job, gents.

Hello fellow Castle heads. Thanks for the great show tonight Wm. Berger! Worthless sounds stellar, too.

Morning All!
In regarrds to the "mainstreaming" issue, I'd say that younger people in general have no other options than moving closer to this behemoth we refer to as mainstream, due to the closure it has become with bubble media and the like. I see no other trend here on WFMU than that younger DJs reflecting theses signs of the times.

@Schlockmaster Very well put "... these are the times, and this is the record, of the time"
  2:38am
Schlockmaster:

But, as Wm. said above, theres
still a bunch of nonconformist shows around, his own being in the core! Thanks!
  2:42am
Schlockmaster:

Same thing as with these NICE retro shows on Netflix, STRANGER THINGS for example, I can watch them with having fun, but its a truly mainstream experience, that does come masked as something "nerdie" or exceptional, but just builds itself out of trademarked building blocks.

Schlockmaster:

welcome to Nietsches world of the eternal rerun, welcome to the HuxleyOrwellWorld.

nice noise there, Wm.!!!!

This is one of my favorite noise cassettes so far in 2016, just two phenomenal sides of crusty envelopment....

...And as to "mainstreaming," we all have to remember that even WFMU is subject to "giving the people what they want," albeit within our own little sub-set of culture. Most people like nice pop tunes, most of the time, "cool" reissues, new rock music, etc. The amount of people that love this show is just about right, when measured against the population of WFMU listeners, viewed as a microcosm of people as a whole. I do not expect some great majority of any radio station's listeners to grok this program. Many more will be drawn to other things; old soul 45s, Ty Seagall, etc. etc. ...it's not a bad thing. It keeps what I do here every week strikingly unique, even in WFMU terms, and I'm very glad about that! It's what I'm shooting for. I enjoy many other WFMU shows for their own merits.
  2:50am
Schlockmaster:

this new kind of"industrial" you often play is so much more enjoyable for me than the 90s stuff, I have to think about the why....
  2:53am
Schlockmaster:

yeah, I'm glad you're still here, Wm.!!!!
