this Jonathan Richman story is really odd. I've seen him twice and that would have been terribly disappointing.
Avatar 11:37am
Tomophobic Tom:

I only have seen Jonathan once, but what struck me was his facial expressions, which swung wildly between joy and rage. I also was very impressed with his guitar playing ability, which I did not really associate with him. He didn't play a single song I knew, which I liked also.

...so - it's not like the sound or mix were actually that bad? Cause that would be one thing...

I've seen him harsh on people from stage and, as you say, it takes you out of the performance.

I saw JoJo at the Central Park bandshell (pre-Rumsey) in the late 80s. People in the center of the crowd were getting sick of being blocked and shouted at the people in the front to sit down. Jonathan looked down and said "Why dont you STAND UP?" He paused and took in the shocked look on the leisure crowd's faces, and then added "I don't 'perform concerts' -- I do rock and roll shows."

JakeGould:

I was at that Jonathan Richman show at Monty Hall and I honestly hated it. A good part of his act is how he’s just a traveling troubadour that casually shows up at gigs. In this case, without even knowing the setup backstory, it all felt quite contrived. I saw him twice before: At the Supper Club in NYC in 1994 and at O'Cayz Corral in Madison, WI in 1998. Such fun and true connection with the audience. And in the case of O’Cayz, it was a dump and he was shouting at the soundboard all the time but it was still fun.

The show at Monty Hall felt passionless. As you said, Michael his OCD on stage was not adding to anything.

FWIW, I had a feeling the show was going to be like that when I saw the Modern Lover’s merch out front. For a good while he dissociated himself from that connection. Now he’s acknowledging it?
Avatar 11:47am
Tomophobic Tom:

@Jake that's exactly how he was in Ann Arbor a year ago. Traveling Troubadour that casually showed up. And left.
  11:48am
JakeGould:

@TomophonicTom: But here at the Monty Hall show, the “traveling troubadour” stuff seemed like schtick and contrived. Also “…which swung wildly between joy and rage.” He’s a sensitive, rage filled, ego. Talented and created some great work, but he’s who he is.

After all - it's hard to describe Music. It's all great - & it's all quite terrible. Haha. They become more interested in Writing...& Being Writers - than anything about Music...Even an opinion well-articulated is - just one opinion.
