Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 9, 2016 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Some people are trippier w/ just an acoustic guitar than others w/ elaborate production...okay so here's a band...I think Donovan deserves more credit than is generally given (certainly for his influence on T.Rex): he was quite early w/ it - & Syd Barrett was a prototype of Alternative in a band that later became paragons of Classic...Altho' being weird w/ just an Acoustic is surely just a pretty natural occurrence...Incredible String Band are exemplars...FreakFolk & all this...Who was that Aussie who was Syd's doppleganger? Modern life is a journey by car. The Passengers
change terribly in their reeking seats, or roam
from car to car, subject to unceasing transformation.
Inevitable progress is made toward the beginning
(there is no difference in terminals), as we
slice through cities, whose ripped backsides present
a moving picture of windows, signs, streets,
buildings. Sometimes other vessels, closed

There's another HDT show theme: Songs Inspired by A Thousand Plateaus. For a day when you're only allotted ten minutes. Even then, a tough bill to fill, I suspect.

I should've mentioned that "Lost" itself referenced "The Prisoner" in a couple of brief & subtle ways. One was a visual quote, where the character the fans called Benry (played by Michael Emerson) pushed aside the clothes in his closet. The other was a thematic allusion to "The Chimes of Big Ben", in that Big Ben could be heard on the sound track, just to remind the audience that "Lost" could make things appear to be happening anytime, anywhen, and it's really some other time or place; "Lost" hammered that point home many ways, but most of the audience didn't give it enough respect, because it's so contrary to conventional exposition.

. . . in the last episide, when #2, #6 and #48 (?) are in that truck cage, driving down the highway, and a car passes them playing the song on the radio, the 3 of them start singing it and dancing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Uncle Michael:

The actual record is heard in the earlier episode that features #48, I believe.

Really enjoying today's program. I watched "The Prisoner"'s first American broadcast on CBS in 1968. I immediately fell in love with the series and have remained a life long fan. The DVD set is a must.

Actually MOST of "Lost" was based on British predecessor material.

For the record, I didn't really understand the show in its original release, and I watched only a few episodes, mostly because I dug how weird it was.

I've always been satisfied with the idea that Number 6 was John Drake from "Danger Man"/"Secret Agent". Entirely arguable, however.

I was 4 in 1968, so my experience was more like Uncle Michael's, where I had some quasi recollection of a white balloon chasing people, then when our local PBS affiliate started replaying it in the late 1970's, was like: "Oh, that's what I saw"

I have only seen 'The President's Analyst' once! It was played on TV like once, then I have never seen it repeated. We were talking about it in school the next school day.

And that had to have been the first use of an actual Beatles record in a soundtrack other than the Beatles own movies.
  3:01pm
Listener Robert:

I too saw it on CBS in 1968 & again in '69. The only reason #6 isn't explicitly Danger Man (Secret Agent Man) is that they didn't have the rights to that character! But they did what they could to imply it.

McGoohan owned the production company that made The Prisoner. He owned the series. In a book about the show I read that by the mid 1970s the series made the break-even point and started making a profit. All gravy after that. A good investment, indeed. It was Patrick's money invested in the series.

McGoohan owned "The Prisoner". He did not own "Secret Agent".

O M G !
I love "The Prisoner." I'll have to check out this show. For now, seeing the playlist and reading the comments, I'll say it appears the episodes are at archive.org . Watch every exhaustive hour on YT uploaded by Pmg6portmeiron, of behind-the-scene interviews with anybody still around who had worked on the show, put together for a documentary - including how McGoohan persisted to iron out the theme . . . An earlier version of the ending had the pennyfarthing wheel morph into the globe ang go "POP!" . . . See:
